Live from Palm's CES 2010 Event! [UPDATE: Transcript + Images]

CES

Sure, we may already have suspected much of what Palm has in store for their CES 2010 annoucements this year, but we also suspect that there's a surprise or two still left in store. No need to refresh the page - just stay tuned at 11am Pacific as we bring you what Palm's got - live!

UPDATE: You want a transcript? Yes you do. It's after the break, with images and all - it seems Sprint coverage in that room wasn't so great. Bets that Verizon was rocking?

FIRST, bitches!

Snow day must be keeping the tweens at home.

I've owned a Palm device of some sort longer than some tweens (including some those on this site) have been alive....

Sure you have. How that would somehow excuse your first post is a mystery to me.

I think I've spent enough money and time on this company to justify getting excited for the announcement, BITCHES!

Except, Pre-central is not run with those monies.

Very short bus ghetto.

Lol...good one! Besides...how many people do u know over the age of 27 (which he implies he is) use the term "Bitches"? Unless, they're so sad, they're trying to recapture their youth....lol.

Yet last in so many other ways...

Using that line every time is as bad as FIRST!

Still last, though!

Excuse me, but,

If the Mobile Hotspot app only works on Verizon, then it may well be time to switch from Sprint, and pick up a Pre plus. (I think I may want the extra memory for some of those games...)

the anticipation is unbearable....

h0@+2(%/+22$9:/etuoxvnadg)%==43$)8#?efjfbcknbgaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!

I'm cant wait to see whats up.....lets go palm.....

Hoping for the best and expecting the worst so that my expectations are exceeded. :)

anybody know of maybe a live video stream anywhere?

+1

I'd really like to watch a stream of this to get the full effect.

I'm not sure if this stream comes from the right place at the CES. Maybe someone can confirm it? Are these guys currently preparing the Palm presentation? I have no idea.

http://cnettv.cnet.com/liveatces

If only I could keep track of this with my Pre :(

Oh well I guess I'll find out what happened after I get out of my meeting and have access to a flash-enabled computer again :)

I know gdgt live worked pretty good on my Pre for the MS event yesterday.

tick... tick... tick...

A year ago, we were waiting to see if Palm would even exist. Now we know they made it (so far). Today we wait to see if they have something to show that can effectively combat 2 goliaths: Nexus One and iPhone...

tick... tick... tick...

Gah 20 minutes to go! Time to play some quake on my pre while i wait! :P

I'm treating CES like my dad. EXPECT NOTHING - that way even the smallest of things are an improvement and no disappointment

cnet has live coverage just not sure what they are covering

Classic. Use Flash for updates so I can't follow with my Pre (I'll be in a meeting). Guess I'll follow on Twitter and/or mobilecrunch http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/01/07/live-from-palms-ces-2010-press-ev...

You can get this on your pre.It isn't flash it is a live chat log. Engadget had good coverage

I'm stoked here..... Common NFS!

SFTP from openssh/dropbear work pretty well for now. ;-)

So nobody knows of any live streams?

just enough time for one last smoke

im able to view the live chat on my pre

can we not post comments in the live chat?

I don't think the Nexus One is that big of a Goliath

I guess we can't post

another live blog: http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/01/07/live-from-palms-ces-2010-press-ev...

LETS DO THIS!!! :D

I gotta watch this live on my Pre since my workplace is blocking the streaming text thingy. LOL

Made a chatroom for fans. http://invistech.blogspot.com/2010/01/palm-ces-fan-chat.html

Engadget is rocking photos on live feed how?

Are there any sites showing a live video feed of the Palm event?

Diether Are you going to the Smaller private event after this?

So they they reach half of france's population, and want to have half of there customers buy smart phones. 10 Million is their projection? So there is only 40 million people in France?

65 million live in France iIrc.

Say it with me....docstogo, Docstogo, DocsTogo, DocsToGo, DOCS TO GO!!!

docstogo, Docstogo, DocsTogo, DocsToGo, DOCS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No sound? No video? Is it 1999?

Yes! France at last. =D

C++. EA Sports. Bring the apps on!!!

Need For Speed is a reality.
So is Sims 3.

I'm already texting people who passed on the Pre/Pixi and telling them to suck it. I canlt help it, Palm is making me happy.

Video baby!!!!!!!!! Finally!
Here we go, get ready for Palm to take off!

Editing too...awesome!

BAD ASS

3D and Video!!!!!!! WOOOOOTTT

Video recording, bitches!

Flash 10 demo!

ANd Flash!!!!! lol

time for this early adopter to take his Pre out of his desk drawer again... C and C++ apps allowed....
the entire App Store could be ported...

flashhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Now Paul is showing off Flash on the Pre. Avatar trailer. It looks a little stuttery -- not bad, but certainly not something we'd want to watch all that much. Frame rate was not super high.

New notification bar functionality -- tap on a YouTube notification to get a new menu to share. Pretty cool idea.

Flash is nice, but only beta? I'm pretty happy with things so far, but man, I wanted this to be a huge, updated and done type of announcement. Oh well, can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes...

This is all wonderful.
GPU enabled FTW (for the win, not f*** the world, although the world would be f***** by that:))

You got any evidence of that? or are we thinking 3D games=GPU enabled? I tried to ask Dieter during the presentation, but that comment seems not to have made it into the live blog.

Awesome games that integrate with webOS. Software updates that provide a new video experience for customers. And last but not least -- Flash plugin for the Pre browser." No Pixi then? Not surprised. Back to Katie.

Looks like we're getting yet ANOTHER update today.
Please don't break Exchange again.

could jon surprise us more??

Spoke too soon, February.

"Look for that update coming in February. It will have more improvements, and it will have that new video functionality Paul demoed. So all of today's announcements... are great examples of our commitment to providing freedom and choice to users."

Pre and Pixi Plus are Verizon exclusive. Lame.

"So as you can see, we've been hard at work building new products. In fact today, we're announcing two new products. First, the Pre Plus. We've removed the navigation button, doubled the internal memory, 16GB of flash memory."

"Second. Pixi Plus. It's incredibly thin and lightweight... and it features built-in WiFi." You don't say?

"Now Katie talked about how important it is that people have choices. We know it's important you can choose carriers... these two new phones are available exclusively on Verizon wireless."

"We're also announcing a new applications... Palm Mobile Hotspot -- it takes tethering to a new level. Just download this app, install it on your device, and you can use your device to connect to the internet... up to five different devices can connect."

And they both have tethering enabled. Verizon exclusive as well.

Dieter: "Add the appropriate feature to your voice and data plan"

I am assuming that this means that you would have to add an added monthly fee to your Verizon plan to use this feature.

Am I assuming correctly?
If so, it would be too bad to not be included in the "normal" data plan. Then Verizon could say that their customers are getting more for their higher priced plans than Sprint customers.

"We think this is a great way to kick off the new year -- these two smartphones will get new life on America's largest 3G network. So these will be available on January 25th."

So the games will only be available for US Pre customers. Sorry Pixi buyers -- you're screwed

Does this mean Europe won't be getting 3D games??? God I am getting so tired of being a 2nd class Pre citizen... OS 1.4? How long are we going to have to wait for that considering we're still waiting for 1.3.5...

webOS 1.4 -- coming OTA with new features in February

Flash 10 beta plugin will be in the App Catalog soon... Pre only!

"So I'd like to invite you all to see this stuff up close. As I said, we've been busy this last year, I told you Palm was back, and we meant it. The team has been working extraordinarily hard, I'd like to thank everyone at Palm. Can we have a round of applause?"

So do the 3D games mean that the GPU is now enabled? Did they make any confirming comments about that at all?

why anyone bought a pre is beyond me... but the Pre Plus makes me feel like we were palms paying beta testers...

???? Are you nuts!?!?!? I'm glad I bought a Pre and today validates all the reason as to why I did.

So palm shouldn't update there phone ever?

The Pre Plus doesn't add much more than doubling the memory. It doesn't even have the center button on it which I love for notifications. I'm glad I've had my Pre for the past six months instead of waiting for the Plus, which I couldn't use since it's Verizon only - and I have had no problems with Sprint at ALL for the past 10+ years, so I don't intend on switching.

Just my opinion...

Edit: Also, there probably wouldn't be a Plus version if we didn't all support and purchase the Pre!

Too bad the Mobile Hotspot app only works on Verizon.

It may well be time to switch from Sprint, and pick up a Pre plus. A mobile hotspot for 5, built right in?! nice. :-)

(...and I think I may want the extra 8 gigs for some of those sweet games...)

Unless you're a Linux hacker (or follow the WebOS Internals IRC channel), you probably aren't aware that WebOS 1.3.5 contains the mobile hotspot and mini dhcp daemons. What is missing is the Mojo UI for them. Not to be rhetorical, but how long do you think that will take?

Why can't you people get it through your heads. The center button is a physical switch. They wear, the damn L.E.D. (not led as in metal) is the light (Light Emitting Diode)is still there. It is under the touchscreen which makes for better quality hardware. You now tap the LED to do everything the center button did! Wow, this isn't rocket science!

Palm, I love you! I am proud to be a Pre owner today, I was already proud, but you've taken it to a new level today. I am beyond excited for all the things that are coming down the pipe. Can't wait for the games to hit today!

Anybody got need for speed or sims in their app catalogs yet?

No N4S in mine yet.

That's the end

siiick... glad i bought a pre =]

Really bummed Sprint is getting left out in the cold. No Plus? Really? No loyalty at all? Really???

What are you talking about? We got launch and for half a year have been the only ones in the US who got to use a Pre at all. Plus is the 1.5 Gen device. I'm sure the next time they release something big we will see it. Besides, I'm just glad they are offering all these free updates via software so we don't *need* to buy a new phone already.

neodorian, don't get me wrong, I feel very lucky to have had the pre before anyone else for the last 6 months. And I've actually enjoyed going through the growing process from day one. Every advancement, either through Homebrew or Palm themselves has been an exciting step. But I look at the Plus as the next step and I'm feeling left out a bit. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. My only hope is that they already know what the pre2 will bring, and will announce it on Sprint near June. I can't see myself ever leaving webOS, and I want to have the best it can offer.
you are right though. These updates are going to make it feel like a new phone, and I'm excited to see where we go from there.

I understand what you're saying. The extra 8 gigs would be nice, but I can live without that. I would however like to have the mobile hotspot app. I hope that Sprint will get that at some point.

Palm needs to do whats best for Palm. and an exclusivity with Verizon will boost their revenue, then so be it. In the end, all of us WebOS users benefit!

YAY PALM!!!! lol i bet some of those defectors will come crawling back!

Damn hopefully they announce a new model for Sprint this year.

I bet they wont announce a new model until a lot of us Pre users are at the upgrading point.

I think I peed my self a little...

games, video, tethering...wah...I fricken love palm right now...

Yay! This is awesome! Great job, Palm!

Well, all good, but nothing that blows me away - and sadly, I think that's what Palm needed. Basically, this just keeps them more-or-less at par, but still dealing with a huge "app gap" (try to say that like George C. Scott in "Dr Strangelove")

Well, I'll keep holding on for a high-end device for business pros/prosumers.

Lame, lame, lame. That's the end of Palm eventually. They needed to be much more bold and with much more than just a memory upgrade and a promise of flash. The Pre will be seen as falling behind. Palm's marketing in 2010 will be lost in the noise to Android and the iPhone.

I agree about voice dialing. also would like to see video out.

Man... if they just add voice-dial my wish list will be complete.

Maybe Sprint will counter Verizon next summer with Pre 2.0 with an SD card slot! ;-)

So much that is so awesome. Still bummed there's not Doc2Go. Oh well, the improved developer access can only help that along, right?

No, I think that this is just the start of a new era, Palm NEEDED some big names to throw around at CES and EA and Gamesloft are some PRETTY big names!!! I really do think that they might just have something here and I for one are very glad that I bought a Pre.

Please Someone tell me that us, the early adopters are going to be rewarded with a phone at sprint sometime in the near future from Palm. I can't believe I'm stuck with sprint without being able to get the next big thing. I have 4G here and would love for a Pre 4G. C'mon palm please answer my wishes. But all-in-all. AWESOME!!!!

this is next level stuff i just hope up here in the United kindom we get the updates earlier this year. cause we still waiting for the 1.3.5 WEB OS. SO IF 1.4 IS coming in Feb when will we get that? hopefully will just wait for the 1.4 February version but palm seriously just steeped up majorly.

Well, they did say EVERYBODY would get the update...so my fingers are very much crossed too.

So how many people are going to jump ship to Verizon? I for One am very happy with Sprint. and if there is now new hardware release I guess andriod will have to be my next phone.

I left Verizon for Sprint... Honestly because of the Pre, and i know that is not wise. But it honestly wasnt worth the price of their plans. I get coverage where i never use to (cept for in my house. No networks get into my house). So i am happy with sprint.

I wont jump ship from sprint and I hate to say it but if what I heard was correct then the first 4G phone will be an Android device and at that point it will be a Horrible decision for me to make.

Any one else cant get into the app cat? Everyone is probably flooding it or... They are updating it with all the new apps they promised!

Some new apps just hit the catalog now, but I don't see Need for Speed yet. :(

Same here... 10 - 15 new apps but no NFS

ea and gameloft are dropping now. The sims are in, just waiting to see N4S. Exciting sh*t isn't it!

Hell yeah, looks like a sweet golf game too...lol

I am actually a little peeved at Palm. I waited hours on June 6th for a pre and now Verizon get the updated version sprint gets nothing? That will be the last time I ever wait for a product like that especially from Palm. How do I know that six months later, they arent going to offer a better device exclusive to someone else?

Is it the shortness of the six months that bothers you, or the fact that any better version would come out at all? 'cause you know newer, better versions are going to come out eventually, right? How long a wait between hardware improvements on any single carrier (say, Sprint for the sake of argument) would make you happy with Palm?

Lots if iPhone users felt this same when they bought the 1st gen phone and then Apple released a new one. Companies have to release new products to keep up or they will fall way behind. We can only hope that Sprint gets something even better down the road, maybe this year, but not counting on it.

Don't you have to wait 6months to upgrade anyway? You never know what might happen by then.

How long have I not had a pre after knowing they were available? We VZ ppl deserve a little something extra!

So the "plus" models are Verizon exclusives? What does that mean for the pending AT&T release? Pre ++ or Pre -?

haha. pre- would suck. but it would make up for having the iPhone for so long. More likely AT&T and Sprint will both get a newer model (++?) at the same time.

I thought it was VERY interesting that AT&T simply said they were getting "two WebOS >DEVICES<" in June - they did not say "Pre" OR "Pixie"

And i can't help but point out that June would be the best opportunity for AT&T to steal back hardcore Palm users from Sprint (as their contracts come up) with a flashy (opps, sorry, no pun intended) new Palm "device"

Any word on an Active home screen or sound profiles?
I was hoping for an announcement where they were going to improve this.
Overall a positive outlook for the Pre and Pixi

About a month ago I was getting really envious of the new Droid phone and stuff but I think Palm is really coming back hard. I would've felt a lot better about my purchase decision if I'd known about some of this stuff earlier and I really question Palm's list of priorities.

In hindsight I think the launch of the Pre was pretty abysmal but don't think it's ended up bad for consumers. Had the Pre launched with more demand we would've never got those massive price drops in hardware. Now they have a very competitively priced phone that mostly matches the competition in features. WebOS is my favorite mobile OS so I really hope it takes off from here.

I want 16GiGs LOL ..

Currently my wife has a Pre on Sprint. I'm still on a contract with Verizon and was waiting for the contract to end so that I can become a Sprint customer. To be honest, i'm still going to Sprint even though Palm Pre Plus is arriving on Verizon. My monthly bill for Verizon makes it look like I am getting ripped off compared to my wife's monthly bill. And her service is just as good as mine. It only makes sense to switch and save the $324 per year. Go Sprint! and go Palm!

It only makes sense for palm to put out an ungraded pre for verizon, it seems like a major factor in drawing customers away from other phones like the droid (and iphone?). If verizon is going to promote the pre, customers won't care about buying the same phone that's been out for 6 months on another carrier, but the word "plus" helps attract attention, and gives the consumer the thought that it's better. The lack of a center button makes it look more sleak and "cooler,"atleast in my opinion, nomatter how little it matters, so that also helps give people the idea it's better.

Palm wants this thing to sell, obviously, as should we all (more phones means more users. More users meens more incentive to developers, means better apps, more apps, and a better community for us.) We shouldn't feel cheated by an upgraded version being exclusive on another carrier, we should be excited by all the new people that are gonna help make WebOS even better!!!
