Yesterday our best guess as to the Pre Release date was this: As soon as possible, so it's anybody's guess. Turns out that's probably not the case. Miles4000 in our forums caught up on the CNET show Buzz Out Loud 951 and listened in to their conversation on the latest Pre Rumors (Jump in around 8:12 in).
Apparently after Palm gave Howard Stern his chance to view the Palm Pre (after which the ingrate picked the Bold), they shuttled it over to CNET's offices to give them a peek. Now, Natalie Del Comte , in addition to being a host on CNET TV, is also a frequent corespondent for CBS's Early Show. Palm figured the Pre would be a good fit for a spot on the Early Show -- but these things take planning. As in: CBS would need to know when Palm would want to be on the Early Show.
One Non-Disclosure Agreement later, Del Comte knows the release date. And you don't. And neither do we. So nyah-nyah. Our only hint: "Don't believe the rumors." Given that there have been rumors for darn near every date between now and the end of June, there's not a whole lot to go off there.
The good news: there is a specific release date -- although it's entirely possible that whatever date Palm suggested could change. Del Comte also thought the Pre was "lovely." Us too. If nothing else, it seems likely that Palm will be getting significantly more national television exposure than the have for releases-past.

Natali's last name is misspelled too. Del Conte not Comte and she's pretty smart as well as hot. I miss her previous show TeXtra from when she lived out here in San Fran. Obviously, the move to NYC was good for her career though.

It wasnt clear to me how they based this date on? It was like they said that it was announced (not a rumor).
Talked with my Sprint rep today and asked about release date. He is sticking with June. When I asked him about May 17th, he acted like he never heard that date.
I don't get all this secrecy. If both Sprint & Palm already set a release date, why do they have to be so "hush hush" about it? They already claimed it was going to be the first half of this year, and now being the 16th of April, there's 75 days left until the end of June. Just tell us the damn release date already.

Palm and Sprint need to drop the secrecy because their buzz is starting to turn negative. Any mystique that they had hoped to create by controlling the flow of information has been negated by the likes of Motley Fool and 24/7 Wall Street speculating that the Pre launch may be a disaster.
They need to get pre-release test units in the hands of reviewers and bloggers not just kids in SF with bad haircuts.
Maybe if they see our anger about this they'll get their head out of it and annouce the release date. Figure at this point if the date is all but secured - what's the reason to keep it secret?

I was talking to Sprint customer service about renewing my contract based on the Pre's availability, and a manager told me to call back on Monday, May 20...

It wasn't Natali that said "Don't believe the rumors," it was Tom Merritt, who does not know the date. All the rumored dates are still fair game.
I think Palm will release the phone sometime in June, close to the I (overhyped)phone 3.0 update. That would create a much more balance buzz about both phones. If they release it now, when the 3.0 update comes out, more buzz will be on the I (overhyped) phone than the Pre. Palm seems to be quiet confident that the Pre will hold is own, so in the mean time they're probably fixing a few bugs and trying to perfect the phone as much as they can, so when it's release it won't be too buggy and won't hurt them when all sources will be judging and rewieving the device.
