iTunes Updated to 9.0.2, Pre Sync is Dead. Again.

Here we go again. Apple has updated iTunes to version 9.0.2 and Palm Pre sync is dead again using webOS 1.2.1, despite Palm's Hurculean efforts to spoof nearly every aspect of USB identification known to mankind. As with previous breakages, iTunes does launch when you connect a Pre with Media Mode, but it doesn't appear as a device on the sidebar.

Pre owners can at least take comfort in knowing that Apple's main goal here was adding support for the new AppleTV format, but breaking Pre sync support was a nice cherry for them.

iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.

Round and round we go. It's your move, Palm, what's it going to be?

That is a really great news because we will have new update for webos soon :-) - Thanks Apple

LOL...was thinking the same...

Just in time for 1.3. :) This still makes me grin...

this will possibly delay WebOS update 1.3. Hopefully not!

Hi,

I'm not sure if OS 3.1 solves this or not, but if you're looking for an alternative to iTunes to sync to the Pre, MediaMonkey 3.2 was just released. It now syncs music (incl. artwork and playlists) to the Pre.

And unlike Apple, we plan to support this ;-)

You can download it at mediamonkey.com

SOMEONE GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I can't hear this "iTunes-broken-or-not" BS anymore. Who the hell cares?? Only idiots can't get their music upoloaded to the Pre without it. Normal folks know how to do it; it's simple as can be.
If you need iTunes to sync your music so badly, then go buy an iPhone, you sissies!!! (..and stop jabbing about iTunes sync being broken.. again.. buuh-uuh!). Palm has far more important things to focus on with the Pre than the iTunes sync.
You guys should stop posting this BS (including you, Dieter!)... please!!! Too many people 'out there' seem to judge the Pre simply by its iTunes sync capabilities anyway... And that's plain wrong, as everybody with a Pre knows. The phone has so much more to offer.
I suggest all you Pre owners stop whining about it, as this only provides more ammunition to all the Pre-haters out there! -- STOP IT!!

I think you need more exclamation points.

Seriously though, calm down dude.

its really not a big deal... jst dont update to the new version... simple as dat lol

+1. I don't need Apple TV. I will just stay at my current version. :)

+1 Me too.

exactly what i was thinkin

When will Apple realize that letting non-Apple mp3 devices sync with iTunes actually brings in more iTunes users, and does not hurt iPhone or iPod sales?! Is so Apple so stuck up their own asses that they think people are buying mp3 devices or for that matter smartphones based on whether or not they sync with iTunes? There are a million methods in getting DRM-free music and video to your smartphone even if you have iTunes and it doesn't sync with your device! Apple is so pretentious of a software developer that they think non-Apple devices are not good enough for Apple software syncing, but their software is fine to run on non-Apple platforms! FUCK APPLE! I couldn't care less about iTunes, iPods, iPhones, Macs, or any other Apple product!

I know that people are going to comment to this saying that Palm should give up. I think they should continue, but only if it's something that they can put a single person on, have him work for a few hours on it, and fix it. If it's something they need to throw a ton of resources at, only then is it a waste.

I disagree. This is not a professional, comprehensive solution for users.

Palm should give up. It's fucking stupid.

Apple has APIs available for ANYONE to use. It would take Palm all of an hour to throw together a quick application (hell, make it in wxWidgets with some conditionals and it'll work on any platform) that uses the APIs, grabs the data and throws it on the Pre. Done. They could have done this in the time they've wasted with this stupid game they're playing.

Here here!

Be logical, If Apple made it that easy, do you think Palm would be doing it like this?

Look at how anal Apple is on iPhone apps, El-Steavo probably turned palm down just because they were competition. The iTunes software is Apple's bread & Butter in their monopoly. They don't want competition, they want to own the whole marketplace.

YOU be logical. Apple does make it easy to sync with an iTunes library - what they DON'T make it easy to do is use iTunes itself to sync.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660 . Bam. Official documentation from Apple about how to sync your media player with your iTunes library. Nokia uses it ( http://europe.nokia.com/A4423139 ), RIM uses it ( http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/media/mediasync.jsp ), and even doubleTwist uses it ( http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt ).

Palm needs to suck it up and release a syncing solution that WON'T break every time an iTunes update comes along. People say Palm is playing a cat-and-mouse game with Apple, but it's really playing a cat-and-mouse game with their users, and it's not fair to them.

I'm not going to update iTunes, and will continue to sync, but I hope this gives Palm the incentive to release their own wireless sync solution.

I totally agree! I never updated itunes anyway.I am still on 8.1 i think?
My phone is a Preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

yea... call it Pre Tunes... simple as dat...

How far does this Palm/Apple battle have to go before the FTC will finally consider taking sanctions against Apple for anticompetitive practices? Yes, I realize that such a thing is far from being even remotely likely at this point... but it's fun to think about Apple and Steve Jobs being raked over the legal coals for their obvious jerkish actions.

Perhaps PreCentral could also include reviews, or links to, iTunes substitutes with this article? I know there are a few out there, but am not familiar with any of them. It would be helpful to those of us who haven't had our Pre for all that long...

check this out. http://www.precentral.net/doubletwist-manages-pre-media-freely-easily-transparently

Yes DoubleTwist will sync but will not sync play lists and in addition to that, in my experience, it's slow as molasses.

Yea, doubletwist is great if you have an affinity for malware.

Read the EULA and never look back.

I highly recommend iTuneMyWalkman for free iTunes/Pre syncing that won't break.

It's irresponsible for people to keep recommending doubletwist, rather than letting people know about its malware connections.

You're kidding right? I mean you have to be...

How exactly is Apple doing anything anti-competitive? Your argument is that they provide software and hardware that work together, but its anti-competitive if they don't give others a free ride? So I suppose Nikon software should be forced to support Canon cameras? Or HP's printer drivers should support Epson printers? Or the Nintendo shoudl be forced to let Microsoft put the Wii software on the xbox?

There is nothing anti-competitive or illegal about making software that works with the devices you design it to work with only.

Whats even more hillarious is that you completely ignore the fact that its 100% possible (and fairly easy) to write software to sync with your music collection and include playlists anyway! Want proof? RIM does it for the Blackberry! Apple makes the iTunes library file available in clear, open, XML! All your music is just sitting there on your computer, ready to be synced! All Palm has to do is write some software to do it!

Why should Apple be forced to give Palm a free ride in iTunes? Apple makes iTunes to help make the Mac and iPod/iPhone experience better. Palm is trying to COMPETE with that. You don't give your competitors help! Doing that puts you out of buisness!

Palm needs to grow up and treat its users right by building pre sync software that will work, not violating the USB standard, spoofing ID's, and generally hacking a solution that is going to break on a regular basis. Its childish and its unprofessional, and frankly when I pay several hundred dollars for something I expect better.

I could not have articulated these thoughts better myself. I believe you are correct on all points made.

Yes, cause that argument works so well when Microsoft put on a media player in their own operating system, or web browsers. On the Mac iTunes is the bundled Media software, they almost trick you into downloading iTunes to get Quicktime. (Explain why iTunes is bundled with Quicktime, but if I download iTunes, i have to get Quicktime seperately, despite the fact that iTunes NEEDS Quicktime to even WORK!)

"Why should Apple be forced to give Palm a free ride in iTunes? Apple makes iTunes to help make the Mac and iPod/iPhone experience better. Palm is trying to COMPETE with that. You don't give your competitors help! Doing that puts you out of business!"

Now THAT is a great argument... You should be a lawyer for Microsoft in the UK, where the EU is forcing them to put in a ballot so that users can get Non IE browsers in Microsoft's own OS. Now, like any Apple apologist you're going to say it's different. But nowdays, it's not. iTunes music store, is the number 1 retailer of music in the US. At this point, Apple distributes it like Malware.. the whole Quicktime thing up there is my point. As successful as iTunes and the iTunes music store is, the "It's just software" argument is starting to become moot. iTunes is probably on more computers than Windows Media Player... which i remind you, MS did get sued in the EU for bundling.

IE's inclusion in ever version of the OS, and integration streamlined the experience, though in a imperfect way. Booting up a new computer and having a, now important, part of the computer using experience, IS EASIER FOR CONSUMERS! Then it's our job to educate ourselves and decide to download, Firefox, Chrome or Opera. Microsoft shouldn't be forced to release an OS removing their browser, or giving their competition the stage themselves at boot. Windows 7 doesn't even have Live messenger, Windows Movie Maker, nor it's email app built in anymore. MS has their own Anti-virus software, but it's not even given any showing above their competitors. I almost missed it!

As for palm making their own software... Do you even pay attention to how consumers work? Apple milks the hell out of iTunes, cause even IT knows that consumers want to use as few programs as possible. So Palm will have to take more rescources to make their own multi-platform software, that.. would basically have to be a clone of iTunes, or people would bitch.. though they'd bitch if it was a clone of iTunes.. so the software would end up being a worse move then the cat and mouse game with Apple.

Ok Palm... webOS 1.2.2 here we come! *grin*

No seriously, I'll probably not update my iTunes either since I have no need for AppleTV...

LOL I'm still on 8.2.1.6.

1.3 hopefully will add this. Though some don't think 1.3 is quite in the works yet but it will be eventually. Unless Palm decides to be super cool and add a huge 2.0 update lol no but seriously. Palm should just fix it. At this point Palm can say oh well when itunes updates Palm needs an update to run on the newest software. Make it seem normal.

Maybe Palm will fix this one more time just to see is really 9.0.3 does stop sync for ALL devices :), rofl. Honestly guys why arent you using doubletwist or amazon mp3 by now??

7.7.0.43 or something like that, hahha, Palm shouldn't even bother anymore, just use double twist program, it syncs anything to the Pre and it make it fit perfect. No one that has a Pre is upgrading their Itunes anyways

YAY New iTunes

No Pre Sync Perfect

iPhone FTW

Palm should just license Double Twist and move on.

right on!

Yay. Another version of iTunes I won't upgrade too! I just keep hitting that cancel button when the Apple updater pops up.

LMAO...This is rich. Palm needs to spend the chump change and build software to read the iTunes xml file. Think about it. The only real losers is Palm, Pre, and sprint to lesser degree. Why would I spend a couple hundred dollars for a phone that has its primary media sync capability break everytime I update my itunes. That means I cant get the latest iTunes update out if I so choose to. Palm ends up looking like a third rate company. The Pre starts to look like a glitchy, inefficient and subpar product and Sprint doesn't get the sales or churn reduction it was looking for in Pre sales...while iphone users keep getting itunes updates with better features they can use their phone with. Someone said Palm/Pre is getting free advertisement over this. LOL, bad advertisement.

Palm can keep this up if they want. I hope they do. It's a lose/lose/lose/lose/win situation. Palm/Pre/Sprint/Sprint customers lose, iPhone users win

Who uses iTunes?

Yeah seriously...

It's a really really annoying music player.

iTunes has close to 100,000,000 users. That's who's using it! It's really, really big and most of those users are very satisfied with It. And it's growing. Despite your personal dislike, don't fool yourself into thinking you are in the majority. You're not! The Droid is no threat to the iPhone, but it will affect Sprint and the Pre. The Pre has a lot to overcome including not delivering on it's promise. Being a great device is not always enough. The iPhone redifined smart phones and is enjoying unmatched success.

I wonder if Palm is deliberately spoofing only just enough to make it work, knowing how and that Apple will break it and they'll have to (or get to) fix it again. This whole thing is beyond silly for both companies and is just childish for both.

Yeah I'm guessing that they had a plan in place long before the release.

I don't think childish is the right word. It goes more to show how Apple is committed to keeping other devices out of their play ground. Every time they do this the more apple expresses how anti-competitive the iStore really is.

I'm not a developer, but it seems to me that this should be pretty trivial to fix. Palm obviously knows what Apple keeps changing. All they really have to do is compare the old file to the new one...right? There are lost of programs available that will compare two files for you. If they really wanted to, and they didn't want to wait for a full update, they could probably fix this within a day.

Prefect timing. Palm needs all the publicity it can get with the Cliq, Hero and Droid gobbling up the tech blogs...

+1 exactly what i was thinking!!!!

the blocking of itunes sync has typically, resulted in bad press for Palm and noted drop in it's stock. If palm is lucky, the entire market rebounded today off this weeks slide (largely on positve gdp numbers and mutual fund buying), the positive momentum of the sector outweighed this news and it won't damage the companies value. But all news isn't good news and this has typically been seen as bad news just like those reports, true or false, about high returns. It reflects poorly on Palm management. Makes it look like they can't get their house in order and considering the pressure google's android is putting on them and a supremely profitable apple, at least investors may go, "if it's a choice of companies i'm not going with Palm until management can deliver consistent solutions." Also potential consumers may say this back and forth sounds like a hassle.

Why would you want to give any of your money to Apple?
Double Twist it people

Why do people care? There are other, better aps that have been around longer and work fine. Sticking with iTunes is like refusing to get rid of IE6 in favor of Firefox or Chrome because it's what you're used to.

Digital media was around before iTunes and it still exists without it. Use any other program and enjoy the lack of restrictions.

Please give examples. Will these apps read in my files that are being used by iTunes? Will it move over the play lists? Are they faster (my experience with DoubleTwist is that it is very, very slow)? Are they easier to use for a non-technical user like my wife? If I want to buy something that is just in the iTunes store, can I and will it still sync?

As the other person that replied to your post, and many others, I would love examples of easy transitions. Usability for my wife, ohhh yeah and compatibility with our ipods. I am far from an apple fan and don't think itunes does anything super special, it is very nice to be able to manage all our music and playlists in the same area, I also enjoy purchasing some music cheaply from the itunes store (VARY RARELY).

I am with many others, I think I have upgraded iTunes maybe twice in 4ish years. I have however used it to manage my music for that entire time, so yeah the ability to have the same setup for my home theater, ipods, and pres is a nice feature. I like others will not update and be cool with the compatibility.

With all that said, this whole thing really makes me laugh and as long as palm isn't spending a large amount of resources on it.... cool. I can't believe apple can honestly believe by keeping itunes proprietary they are gonna sell more ipods/iphones/etc. So it does seam to be an odd move (or an attempt to one up palm) to me to continually take away a money making property in iTunes to try to lock out a device that isn't really competing with your device.

Maybe you shouldn't have gotten locked into itunes in the first place? Anyone who didn't see that they wouldn't have the freedom to move on to better things when they decided on itunes is willfully ignorant.

Personally, I just buy used CDs and encode them using the exact VBR, and the exact tagging *I* choose, then place the stuff in directories by artist/album.

And no, that's not difficult. If you are a windoze user, there is cdex, for example. I wrote my own scripts, but that's me. It's not necessary these days.

Great! maybe this will get the ball rolling on a new update to fix a very important part of every Smartphone...the calendar...oh wait, iTunes is more important than a functioning & useful calendar. Silly me!

I see no point in ever upgrading from iTunes 9.0.0.70.

I gotta say, go Palm. Keep trying to spoof iTunes. Make them work..lmao..at this point, I think it is more to be a thorn in the side, a pain so to speak. I'm not worried about it. I have never used iTunes before, and never will. Friends who have to use iTunes, because they have the other phone, I love hearing them talk about how much of a p.i.a. it is having to use the service....insert snicker here....anywhosits...go Palm.

I gotta say... I'm with the group who just thinks this is ridiculous. Apple has a right to keep their software proprietary as long as they don't monopolize the market. As many, MANY people have pointed out, there's nothing forcing us to use iTunes. There are PLENTY of other options out there which provide sync solutions that are every bit as robust (if not more so).

While I hate to admit it, Palm is in the wrong here legally speaking. No matter how big a bunch of jerks Apple is being for "fixing" this every time Palm hacks iTunes sync.

This just means that it's really time for Palm to come up with a software solution of their own. Or for me to get up off my lazy butt and move my music over to a better solution than iTunes. I would hope that Palm would stop this ridiculous cat fight and move on to fixing more systemic problems with the Pre.

Apple is the #1 retailer of digital music. If Microsoft can't force you to use Internet Explorer, Apple can't force you to use an iPod.

1st, It's all music, not just digital.

2nd How many times has Microsoft been sued over Internet Explorer?

So how much of a pig has iTunes turned into now? Has it hit 200mb yet? So much for calling Windows bloated, Apple! And it STILL doesn't monitor folders. Thank goodness DoubleTwist makes iTunes updates mostly irrelevant for the Pre. Its only downside is that it works WITH, and not INSTEAD of iTunes :(

Not a fanboy, but iTunes will monitor a specified folder now.

And the new Home Group is pretty neat. I like iTunes, and I like my Pre. I'm in the camp of keep spoofing.

I also barely update iTunes so it's not an annoyance whatsoever.

Wow... So much hate for iTunes. As a mac user who seems to be the only person alive who still buys CDs, I love ripping CDs in iTunes. Just because you use iTunes doesn't mean that you necessarily have to make purchases from Apple's store. I just like that its an easily accessible way to view my music collection. Video podcasts are also great within iTunes, among other things.

I switched everything back to Windows Media Player yesterday, and it works perfectly. No play lists, but with Music (Remix) I can do them on the fly. I've had enough of Apples quirky, bug filled, freezing for no reason excuse of a media player!

OMG, I can't believe Apple is wasting their time with trivial things like breaking iTunes, when they have Android 2.0 sneaking up in their rearview mirror.

i love it.. i freakin love it lol

This is both awesome and annoying.

Awesome because this whole debacle is bringing a lot of free publicity to the Palm Pre. Palm are the good guys, trying to make something work. Apple are the bad guys, trying to break something. There is no question as to who holds the moral high ground here.

Annoying because Palm is wasting resources making iTunes sync work that they could be using in improving their OS. WebOS already has some performance problems that really need to be solved. Is iTunes syncing really that important? There's already working third party solutions.

I don't even care; I don't listen to music on my Pre unless it's ShoutCast or Pandora. My iPod Nano is more convenient and holds more music, and of course will keep working fine with iTunes.

I mostly use Pandora, but there are times when I don't have a data connection and listening to the small amount of synced music is convenient.

"Awesome because this whole debacle is bringing a lot of free publicity to the Palm Pre. Palm are the good guys, trying to make something work. Apple are the bad guys, trying to break something. There is no question as to who holds the moral high ground here."

free bad publicity. another time the pre is not functioning as promised.

PALM IS EVIL! oh... and not only evil but also STUPID!

free bad publicity. another time the pre is not functioning as promised.

Fortunately, this isn't something a reasonable person would blame on Palm, so I don't think the publicity is bad for them. I think it only becomes bad at the point where they can no longer fix it. Everyone recognizes this for the cat and mouse game that it is, so the expectation will be for Palm to fix it. If they can't, then it becomes a problem.

It's not unlike a file format problem. OpenOffice doesn't "look bad" for not being able to read a new MS Office format, unless they never manage to get compatibility with it. This is the same kind of dance.

And, honestly, even if they don't fix it, all they'd have to do is point users to one of the myriad other ways the Pre can sync their content (which is what they did the first time an Apple update interrupted the syncing).

This is really just a sideshow. Most people who consider perfect syncing with iTunes on their phones to be a necessity already have iPhones. Anyone who has a Pre and iTunes music will adjust to a new way of syncing if they have to. And anyone who doesn't have a Pre yet doesn't have the expectation that iTunes will always sync with it, because they've been exposed to the media around it (assuming they did even a half-assed job of researching the phone).

Dieter,

Why, why, why would you say "Palm's Hurculean efforts to spoof nearly every aspect of USB identification known to mankind?"

Why? The link you pointed to shows that it has been very simple. You have posted articles in the past on how little time Palm has had to spend on this. Then you call it "Hurculean?????"

So I go to Macrumors.com and you are quoted. Now everyone thinks Palm is wasting a bunch of time on this. The effort has taken a few hours!

You are feeding the trolls!

This.

thank GOODNESS i knew better than to update my itunes .. i get why people don't care .. or say its so much easier to drag and click .. but when you have your whole itunes set up ..it makes a difference.. i don't care about updating my itunes

Yep, drag and drop works great for me. I've never synched iTunes with *anything* including my iPod. Flylists works great in the remix, and now that I have the music on my Pre I don't use an iPod anymore anyway. So Apple and Palm can keep kicking each other in the nuts all they want. Kinda silly on both their parts.

From Pre Central's Homepage - article - "There's a Patch for That Part 3"

http://www.precentral.net/why-you-keep-running-out-space-apps

"more and more Pre users are running into a frustrating error: Sorry, Not Enough Memory. “What do you mean, not enough memory?” you promptly asked the phone. “You have 8 GB of storage, I have 50 apps. This doesn't add up.”

"First off, there is no numerical limit on how many apps you can install, so don’t fret that you’ve hit some magical barrier."

"The problem comes with how Palm decided to protect applications from copying by end users,..."

LET'S REPEAT THAT, SHALL WE...

"The problem comes with how Palm decided to protect applications from copying by end users,..."

Oh, so Palm's cool with copying the iPod USB ID, even though told not to by the USB ID group or whatever they are called and Palm wants to pull some morality crap on it's users by partitioning the space alloted for downloading apps for fear of them being "copied by end users..."

What a bunch of doofuses over at Palm!

Which is PREcisely why the PRE is a looser product!

See...Feeding the trolls.

Well.. The same reason that Android won't let you install apps to the SD card, or paid apps on the developer phones. Using a foothold in free software to allow other people to sync their legally paid for music and podcasts, is not the same as Palm leaving an easily open hole for piracy and people taking pay apps and redistributing them for free.

It is only for the Mac, I have Windows 7.

I highly recommend iTuneMyWalkman. It syncs way better tha iTunes does anyway, and your music doesn’t end up hidden and obfuscated on your phone; http://ilari.scheinin.fidisk.fi/itunemywalkman/

It’s also free, and works with iTunes, so you don’t have to switch media players.

Doubletwist is a malware bomb.

I think it's really sad, for Pre Owners, who bought these phones with the promise of "iTunes Syncing" with iTunes. I could not handle having a phone that constantly had to be updated because the company I bought it from is a backdoor bootleg company who, Like the rest of the world, Can't play by the rules and has to hack the software I'm paying to use and it's constantly being shut down. Apple has told Palm, All they had to do was make their own syncing software to sync with iTunes and tada like blackberry and everybody else does. iTunes allows syncing with iTunes through numorous companies, it's called the software agreement. Apple Doesn't mind if they sync, but with their own software. Thats why it's iTunes+iPod. Its a hardware+software package. Just like Apple hardware and Apple Software, Their sold and marketed together. That's how Apple works and thats why Their products, Just work perfect. I'm not hating palm, therefore I have had numorous Palm products, I just think Palm is loosing more money, From Lawsuits and etc, than they would actually using the money to product the software and please their customers the way they intended to from the beginning. Palm just needs to put their heads on right and stop trying to play dirty. It's only making them looking like asses. Their going to ruin the image and end up looking like a cheap backstabbing company who rides other companies back to gain customers. More props for Apple blocking Pre. I would too, Until Palm obeys by the rules and plays the game the right way. I'm not a hater. I almost bought a Pre, until all this started. I wouldn't be pleased with the service I'd be getting with this, One day, Yay, Itunes Syncing rocks, Go to sleep, wake up, oh look my phone doesnt work, well I guess I could keep the present software to keep sycning, but My phone will never progress because I can't update the software. Kinda sucks if you ask me. Go Apple. iPhone+iPod Touch+PowerbookG4!!

"I almost bought a Pre, until all this started. I wouldn't be pleased with the service I'd be getting with this, One day, Yay, Itunes Syncing rocks, Go to sleep, wake up, oh look my phone doesnt work, well I guess I could keep the present software to keep sycning, but My phone will never progress because I can't update the software. Showing you are a liar and a fanboy, you never even looked into the Pre and clearly know only the apple fanboy bs you have caught. Phone does progress because it's the ITUNES software you don't update....

Perhaps Palm should team up with Psystar. :) No worries, Palm will have another hack out before the weekend. Apple really botched this release by not waiting until Friday. Now, Palm will release an update and own the news cycle.

Seriously, anyone thinking this is making Palm look good can't be taken seriously. Every time Palm hacks iTunes, it sends the message that the competitor offers a superior experience. Since they won't give it to us, we will take it by force. By promoting DT, you are still just promoting iTunes. It says that the only way to get the best media sync experience is to hack the competitor or buy the competitors device. Regardless of the solution you adopt for your Pre, it will never be the full iTunes experience. Palm really has to let this go. There is still no indication that they have moved a million units. Perhaps they should consider getting their own house in order instead of leaving everything up to the developer and homebrew communities.

any news on syncing with the zune software? lol

When we got 1.2.1 and it "fixed" iTunes I updated to v9.
Since then I've gotten really spotty syncing. Sometimes the Pre shows in the sidebar sometimes it was totally ignored just as this article mentions 9.02 does.

I've gone back to v8.2 and will stay there. I saw no improvement with v9 anyway.

Palm, for god's sake, how bloody pathetic can you be, as a company? And Pre users/supporters--for god's sake, how bloody childish can you be? Palm is leeching, pure and simple, and in the process is being morally _repugnant_. Give it up, get over at--Apple has every right to do what they are. Develop your own damned software, or read the iTunes XML file like other legitimate syncing apps do.

Really pathetic.

And watch people NOT use it because it's NOT iTunes. Just like people didn't buy a Zune cause it's Not an iPod.

I work at Walmart, people are that dumb. I watched a little girl leave the store crying, cause her dad bought her a regular mp3 player, not understanding why he had to pay another $110 bucks to get an iPod with a screen. When people come in to buy MP3 players they are either looking for an iPod or something cheap. Most people don't know what the difference is between an iPod and a mp3 player. At this point, Apple IS a monopoly. Cause of their market share, nothing can reach the support they have.

I don't think Palm is in the wrong, and I don't think apple is in the right. I personally see Apple as a monopolistic bully, who has the right lawyers and the right flavored cool-aid. One day they will get theirs. And I'll admit, i don't think it'll be from Palm. I am personally getting annoyed by the back and forth.. but it won't get me running for iPhone. It's overpriced, AT&T is wretched, and.. Apple's App store policies are questionable at best. I'm looking at the Droid or Hero to be honest.

Put me down for "who the hell uses iTunes, anyway?" too.

Still using WinAmp since my college days, still lovin it. LOL!

Who the hell cares ?????

This is just too fun to watch. As one who grew up watching Tom and Jerry, I love a good game of cat and mouse!

Seriously I never understood all the noise about iTune syncing. Who cares? Whoever uses iTunes is probably IT illiterate. I even have an ipod and never installed iTunes. Palm should focus on much more important issues/fixes that this. Partition Size bug, missing Video Recording from the cam, BT file transfer, opening access to codecs so we can stream any sort of audio/video stream and much more !!!

Forget iTunes. We don't need it !!!! Even if you have an iPhone/iPod, just copy paste the tracks over. I mean how hard is that?

Palm chasing after iTune sync is like you selling yourself to Apple. You are becoming another "iphone/ipod" device. PALM WAKE UP and fix the real & important issues of your users !!!!

I've never used itunes.

iTunes SUCKS. I don't understand what the hell is the fuss about all the time? Palm please spend your time on more important things???

While iTunes does suck and I have a ipod touch and the one reason I don't use my ipod touch is because I hate syincing anything with itunes. Anyway to my point. Don't you guys think that Apple breaking syncing actually helps palm instead of Apple. I mean do you know how many sites I have read on that apple broke the sync again. Everyone knows about the iphone while allot of people have never heared of the pre, so this gives the pre free advertisement all over the web. If I was Palm even if I thought that itunes sucked which it does I would continue updating this as long as possible. One thing Palm needs to do though is build their own player and still keep updating the pre to work for itunes just so their name is out there.

Is it just me or a lot of the people who post here against Palm don't own a Palm Pre and only joined this community to bash Palm?

Ya! we palm Pre call them ROtten apples.BTW, i-tunes SUCKs!!

Man all I want it notification for tasks, a calendar agenda upgrade and a FB app. forget iTunes

They provide an API... Use it.

Funny... I haven't had a problem at all since I remembered WMP sees my Pre as a media device when I connect as USB. I've enjoyed problem free syncing of playlists, albums, album art, etc. from day 2.

Is it really so hard to mount the Pre and drag mp3 (and/or m3u) files to a folder/directory then unmount it? It works on all platforms, all operating systems, all devices, costs nothing, has no dependencies or minimum requirements, and is done without any proprietary software or protocols.

I would much rather Palm take the time they are wasting chasing iTunes and spend it updating/enhancing the music player on the phone (and other things that badly need improving).

i'm hugging and kissing my iPhone right now. ;-)

Why don't you swallow the apple whole and choke yourself, lol'
My phone is a Preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I can't wait till Apple downloads an update for iPhone/iPod intended for legit purposes, but bricks any non Apple device connecting to iTunes. Sure, it will require an "OK" to update button. From what I've seen here most users are daft enough to click OK (same problem with some Windows users installing viruses).

simple fix. DONT UPDATE ITUNES! It just gets slower and slower anyway.

my iTunes is on 9.0.1.8 and when i updated my pre it still didn't work, which forced me to use doubletwist. that program does the job, but takes FOREVER!! and it is a resource pig, like ridiculously, and it doesn't sync seemlessly, playlists? kiss them goodbye. now, i could go in and usb transfer music, but i like transferring playlists with only 8 gigs available, so iTunes is a really nice feature that i appreciate. this next time when palm fixes the media sync i will NEVER update again, regardless of the claims to fix it. i love my pre, and iTunes sync is a real bonus to me when i'm constantly switching out music. Amen

who knows where do i need to update my phone...

Well here goes I'm going to install Doubletwist and see how this goes. I bought an ipod mini to take to the gym (battery on my pre goes dead in a hurry if I'm using it like that) today and was more than a little annoyed when it updated itunes and screwed up my synch. Not just that it messed me up, but my daughter loved my Pre so much that she got one last week and well....we are both without all of our itunes downloads.
I have NEVER liked iTunes (was a Rhapsody To Go fan) but decided to try to make friends when I bought my pre since it synched so easily and had so many songs that, well, I couldn't do much with outside of iTunes.

I'm hoping it does what I need it to do so I can end the relationship with Apple once and for all. At first glance it looks like it will take a little getting used to but like all things, change happens.

They put to much time into itunes when there a lot more issues to deal with. They need fix all the other problems with the next upgrade.
