Howard Stern to Get a Look at the Pre?

William tips us off to Rich Fink's Twitter post (via Mike Cane):

listened to Howard Stern announce this morning he is getting preview of Pre next week. Prototype will be used. No demos avail.

...which honestly comes as little surprise, given that none-other than Palm's VP of Public Relations, Lynn Fox, gave Stern a call back on Thursday, March 12th to recommend the Pre to him.  Although it's unclear whether or not Stern himself will wait for the Pre, it's fair to say that he's a lucky devil (possible emphasis on devil?).  I do enjoy Stern myself, although I'm not a regular listener, and it's good bet that he'll give the folks at Palm a pretty good grilling about the device and its functionality.

Here's our question: how long until the PR offensive for the Pre peaks?  We asked it during our podcast yesterday (note to Palm, a podcast is like a radio show for the internet.  Since the Pre is so internet-centric, some podcast demo-time would be fitting, no?  Ahem.) and the question is starting to get bigger.  You can only keep interest up and climbing for so long before it wanes and you most definitely don't want that to happen too long before the release date.

Thanks to William for the tip!

First
man this joint aint never coming out, on nation!!!!!!!!!!

for those of us who don't have siruis sat radio, will the spot be recorded and added to precentral? im interested.

I know people used to record his show and post it on bit torrent sites.

Who cares what late night or radio shows that the Pre is demoed on or what celebrity gets to play with it next. I for one am extremely tired of Palm trying to hype the Pre without giving the one piece of information that everyone wants to know, the RELEASE DATE! I don't know what this says about me, but as much as I want a Pre, I'm actually starting to hope that it's gigantic failure for Palm.

Personally, I can't imagine a more perfect release. All this free marketing. People dying to get the phone. There's just not another phone available that matches the Pre.

... But by the time Palm actually releases the Pre, there will be many devices that match it feature for feature. ;-)

But seriously, I have gadget lust as much as the next guy, but would it kill them to provide a little more concrete details; IE: scheduled for May release, pricing to be...

Don't tell me they don't know when it is expected to be released and don't dare tell me they do not have it priced already.

When VZW was building up hype for the Storm, the initial release date was rumored for months to be late October and about two weeks prior it was leaked all over the net that it would not happen. Okay, then a late November date was leaked and it satisfied most and lo and behold, the POS Storm arrived that exact day! Yes, I hate my Storm and am thinking about making the switch to Pre/Sprint.

However, the longer they tease, the more tedious it gets and then I start to think, would the iphone be so bad...

Palm, nor Sprint, is dealing from a position of strength; I think we can all agree on that. Give us something concrete and we'll sit tight for another few weeks. Otherwise I do think they really risk the dreaded hangover effect and that could cost them a ton of converts.

I'm just assuming by the end of 1st half 2009 equals June 30. So anything earlier is a bonus! Plus I'm not going out day one to get it. Waiting for reviews because I want to be sure and I'm also switching carriers to get it.

I honestly think that palm isn't giving the release date for a reason. I think they took into consideration that a lot of people are going to try and beat the pre announcing their new phone that's "better" than the pre before the pre is out and if Palm would've given us everything to early there'd be nothing to bring our minds back to the pre, so I think palm's holding the release date to CTIA so that way there's less time for anyone to bring down the pre's hype and it'll get our minds focused on back on the pre (though mine has been pretty focused on it this whole time).

Hoo, Hoo, Hoo!!! I invented communication. Tell 'em Fred.

"But by the time Palm actually releases the Pre, there will be many devices that match it feature for feature."

That's not true in terms of hardware or OS. No phone will be as sexy as the Pre with it's slideout keyboard. There is no form factor, now or on the horizon that matches the Pre.

I'm a daily Stern listener and Treo 700p user who will get the Pre. No great desire for the iPhone or to change over to AT&T...

First, Lynn did not get through to the Howard Stern Show that day. She called in to the Wrap-Up Show that is aired afterward, hosted by his Producer Gary "Baba Booey", who repeatedly gets his facts wrong on everything. Long story short, Gary laughed her off and basically hung up on her.

For the past three weeks the phone debates have been pretty heavy on the show and Howard is getting bombarded by staffers telling him to go to the iPhone or Blackberry. Howard has been a Treo user for several years and he has always said that he loves stuff about it, but it is dated as far as tech goes. While he hasn't said exactly the model, I'm guessing he has a 600 or 650.

I've almost put my fist through the wall a few times listening to Gary feed incorrect info to Howard about the Pre and how the iPhone is so much better. Luckily it sounds like Howard is not listening to him yet and did in fact get in touch with Palm for a personal demo, although it is unlikely that it will be aired on the show. Personally I don't think Palm should since it would be going into a wolves den of iPhone users. Unless Palm asks him to sign a NDA, Howard will most likely give his no-holds barred opinion on what he thinks the following day. This could be a blessing and a curse. If Howard likes something, he'll occasionally praise it like he has several time about his Treo, if he doesn't, oh man, look out.

Howard should of tried to get on the Jimmy Fallon's show the nite they had the Pre on the show. Also why cant Howard watch the demo's on the net like we all did?

I have quite literally just took a nap and just now woke up. i had a dream about the pre. I dreamed I got on email saying it will be available in 23 to 27 days.

Now either this is true, or my infatuation with the pre has become an overwhelming obsession.

Howard also said he was researching all phones available and would be an expert on this matter by the time he got one. This a private demo not on air just to be clear. He also knows that the BB has doesn't have some features he wants.

What does Anna Nicole's ex husband have anything to do with the Pre? Oh... THAT howard stern. Nevermind LOL

Well played good sir.

I guess the Pre is off to idiot celebrities. Maybe it won't be much longer.

I for one think that Palm might be expecting that other companies will try to push out similar feature at around the Pre's release and that is exactly why they need to hype it up, so everyone knows is more aware that Pre is doing it first. It's not like they are delaying the release of the thing because they want to hype it first, they are simply utilizing the wait time to their advantage.
