We told you earlier that Howard Stern was going to be getting a private demo of the Palm Pre in his apartment last week.
Well, according to our forums, Howard has had his demo and said that the Pre was "very nice". But evidently Howard still chose the BlackBerry Bold ove the Pre.
Seems that Howard really relies on Lotus Notes and is why he has chosen the Bold. I guess those 3rd party apps are really important and Howard decided that Lotus Notes was so important that since the Pre couldn't connect to the app, he would rather choose a smartphone that could.
Of course, if either Stern or the Palm rep were a reader of PreCentral, they would know that the Pre will be able to sync with Lotus Notes, via the forthcoming 3rd party CompanionLink software.
Too bad Howard didn't choose the Pre because his raving over it could really help to put the Pre in the limelight and help out Palm's sales. Other than those reasons, I couldn't care less what phone Stern uses.
I love the BlackBerry Bold myself, but there's no way I would ever choose the Bold over the Palm Pre. No app could make me not want the Pre! Besides, once the Pre is out, there will be a crapload of 3rd party apps coming for it.

I havnt seen Lotus Notes in years. In the long run I dont think it will be a big deal one way or the other. This phone has to do well based on how solid it is and 3rd party apps.
Palm probably didn't let him touch the phone, go to the app or settings page of his choosing or give him any info on the release date or price...
That's about par for the course for everyone, yes? The mythical "first half of 2009" is still in play....
CompanionLink is too much of a hack for most people on a corporate network. My dad, who works for a very large company whose name consists of three letters and logo is colored blue (you might even call them a BIG, BLUE company (hint, hint)), is sorta stuck on Lotus Notes for, I'm guessing, pretty obvious reasons. If he rerouted his Notes data through Google to access it on his Pre, I'm sure his IT higher-ups (funnily enough, he himself is an IT guy) would throw a royal fit.
Obviously, if his company moved to a groupware platform that was of this century like Exchange ActiveSync, they wouldn't have this problem. But something tells me they aren't going to throw out a product they make themselves...
Obviously, I'm sure Hoo-Hoo could tell the Sirius-XM IT guy to shove it - he practically owns the company at this point - but I guess he's just too lazy to bother at this point. Maybe now Palm will try courting the Opie & Anthony show, as I've said before, I'm sure they could woo Jim Norton into switching (Poor Jimmy has constant problems with his iPhone), and Anthony is enough of a techie that they could probably impress him enough into switching from his iPhone. (Opie is a dyed in the wool CrackBerry hound.)
The screen on the BB Bold is too small for me.
what the hell is lotus notes? and can blackberry do that? he got paid.
So Howard likes the BlackBerry bold and he eats his dingleberries cold???

I am entirely pleased not to have the same taste as Howard Stern.
Just thought I'd link to the ZDnet story - http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=15797 ... Had thought Stern might become a raving fanboy. Oh well... Palm shouldn't have publicised it before they knew what he'd say.
Per CompanionLink's website, the software does not sync e-mail. This is pretty surprising, as the mail file in Notes contains mail, calendar, and the to do list. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed to read that. As someone who is also dependent on Lotus Notes for business-related e-mail, I hope that someone else in this niche market is able to find a workable solution.
I'm surprised, but not very surprised, I guess.
Blackberry keyboards are impressive but I'm always shocked whenever someone references Lotus Notes.
Maybe there's a silver lining. If Howard Stern mentioned the Pre repeatedly, that's good publicity for Palm. And, if he mentioned that he rejected the Pre in favor of something so outdated (Lotus Notes), that might eat away at his tech-cred and push users closer to the Pre.
This is the problem with palm's market, the "fat middle" may not be that fat at all, multimedia and gaming types will still go with the iphone, and business types will still go with blackberrys, palm needs to define a market for themselves, and not just fall in the middle somewhere.
Even this theoretical "fat middle" will likely want expandable memory like the Crackberry and nearly every other phone and smartphone on the market (especially the ones that play music, and all the Treos back to 2003).
I dunno. The iPhone is backed by the hype and deep pockets of Apple. There are a lot of "free with contract" phones that are completely adequate for full keyboard texting and sticking a $40 16GB MicroSD card into them. Crackberries can be had for $100 with contract. The Pre *looks* pretty kewl, but so much of it's specifications are so ridiculously underwhelming - especially if you get tied into a 2-year contract! 8GB memory was novel in 2005, but when your contract is nearing it's end in 2011 will that measly 8GB have been worth it?
This is the best comment I have read on this site in ages.
I have no problem with Howard Stern not liking the Pre. One more in the pipeline for me. :)
If he uses Lotus Notes, he deserves a bad phone. He hates himself.
Howard had a deep relationship with IBM back in the day, which is probably why he's still using Lotus Notes, which is one of the worst pieces of programming I've ever been exposed to. One plus for him, he used to run OS/2 on his personal computers.
(I should clarify I'm a former Stern listener, now an ardent Opie and Anthony fan.)
Gawd, Notes was such a bugger. The last demo I saw a few months back did look like IBM's trying to make it more palatable.
Stern can choose DEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZ NU##$!!!
Lotus Notes rocks and I wish someone did let him know about CompanionLink.
Wow, I didn't know anyone still used Lotus Notes. Yuck....
Seems that Howard really relies on Lotus Notes and is why he has chosen the Bold.
I give him joy of it.
Seriously, Howard, turn in your nerd card, if you ever had one. Lotus Notes? For real?
Notes is quite prevalent throughout the US Government. IBM still actively develops it and version 8 is quite nice.
I guess Stern wants something that's proven to work with Lotus Notes TODAY, not something that will be coming out of beta. If you're a power user, you can't go to 1.0 releases.
As per Lotus Notes, those who think its dead are dinosaurs themselves. Lotus Notes has evolved significantly and is the most open, most programmable messaging/application platform on the planet. Significant usability testing has gone into it over the past 2 years and its on the cutting edge, even with 3rd party application to implement GTD methods. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
I work in an environment that uses both Notes/Domino and Exchange. Domino is far more stable on the server end, and the client has more functionality.
But then again, I still listen to Howard, and got my hands on the Bold last September...
Palm may have actually dodged a bullet with his choice of Blackberry. Howard pretty much exploded this morning, talking about the horrible AT&T coverage that has him using another model of cell phone for voice calls. Said he never had this trouble with Treo and Sprint. He still likes the Blackberry itself, but says it's just about unusable (at least in the NYC area). Everyone else just piled on. Not a good morning for AT&T / Blackberry.
