Palm re-enabled iTunes sync with webOS 1.2.1 by continuing their trend of making the Pre look like an iPod. Palm's webOS 1.0 hack had the Pre mimic an iPod Nano. webOS 1.1 re-enabled it by setting its USB Vendor ID to Apple's. webOS 1.2.1 re-enables it by settings its Manufacturer to Apple and also perhaps by changing the USB Product ID to the iPod Video's (they're even changing the serial number that appears when you plug it in with Media Sync). You can see the entire timeline in our post on the USB-IF response to Apple.
Here's what your computer sees when you set your Pre to Media Sync Mode (changes from webOS 1.2.0 and previous in bold)
USB Product ID: 0x1209
USB Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple, Inc)
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
If it wasn't clear before, it's clear now - Palm is committed to making iTunes sync work, USB-IF be damned. At least they are until it becomes too difficult.

Umm.. None of your links works either..
Oh, the links work fine. But for some reason all the href's are back to this article.
...?
You missed a link at the end there. ;-)
Kudo's to Palm for continuing to stand their ground on this one!!
I am personally in favor of Palm's continued hacking of iTunes. I might actually purchase a song or two from Apple if iTunes continues to work with my Pre. I would even buy an Apple device if they were not so proprietary...
I would only buy a song on iTunes IF Apple allows MY devices to interopt with their library. Otherwise, they get NO money. Amazon MP3 on device is easier anyway.
They do, and you don't need iTunes for this to happen. Get your facts straight.
My facts are perfectly straight. Apple wants to control EVERYTHING. People cower to it, because they think Apple is God and can do no wrong. Why would I both using iTunes for purchasing if I need to load other software to interopt with anything other than over priced and over rated Apple hardware?
Sorry, I tried that and Apple drove me away, because they devices cost more an always do less BY DESIGN. That sucks and I'll not support it.
This is like my cable no longer working, because I didn't by Comcast's TV. Utterly controlling. Go Palm.
hit CTRL+F on explorer (not IE) windows (or use spotlight if you use mac) and find file named "iTunes Music Library.xml", open that file with any text editor, see that? apple lets ANYBODY use their library, even programming beginner can work with something like that for gods sake
so what EXACTLY is apple controlling?
Yeah, sure.
Palm Pre calling itself an iPod, and calling themselves Apple, and you say that **Apple** wants to control everything?
So, Palm flat out lying about what and who they are over a USB interface is the right thing to do? Hmmmm...
You don't like iTunes, fine - DON'T BUY MUSIC FROM THEM. Go buy from Rhapsody, Amazon, or the many other vendors, then sync it all over Palm's sync and music management software solution.
Oh wait - they don't have one, so they rape iTunes and lie. How honest. Yah, Go Palm. Go to hell.
Downloading iTunes 9.01 now... :)
One thing is sure - this will come to a head at some point. It may be a while and I won't predict the victor - but it will come to a head.
I love that my Pre can do this, my IPod battery no longer works.
This hack only took 2 seconds.
An amusing story line but ultimately wasted effort that could be spent doing something important like getting voice dial working. Just relent and let your users move on to stable solutions that are already available.
it is not wasted effort. Palm only takes a little while to actually fix iTunes sync. So its really not a big deal. I appreciate Palm fixing this little annoyance when they can. I think it would be worse for Itunes to stop working even though before launch they said it would. Look at it this way. iTunes update comes out then palm needs a couple weeks to update their software too. N that's it. Nothing more. And BTW I do hate iTunes itself but until double twist has full podcast support downloading/managing I use itunes for my podcast subscriptions. And I do kind of like iTunes 9 compared to 8.
lol you thinke apple was like... Hmm that is weird sudden saturday 3 weeks after iTunes 9 is a released we have a huge jump in downloads. 400,000 people downloaded iTunes 9. Hmm wonder why. Then the phone rings; "Hello?" "Hi can I speak to Phill please?" "Who's this?" "iI's me steve" "Okay one moment please".
"Hello". "Dude Phil"! " They are F%$#ing syncing with iTunes again"! "OMFG are you serious"?
Why do we need install another media manager if you have an iPod and Pre, when iTunes is capable of doing both.
It's not capable of doing both. Not without a hack that is...
Anyone else besides me find this as a poor crutch for the lack of a real way to sync?
Not to mention the lack of a real media player (PLEASE finalize API's for 3rd parties to make a better media player)... or maybe this is just it. They are really banking on 3rd parties to do something.
But given our music isn't all online yet (as much as some tech folk might want to think), we still gotta sync back home. Apple can probably push out tiny blocking updates far faster than Palm pushing firmware updates.
NO! Jesus! Lol this is not a 'crutch' for a real way to sync. This is them saying sync with whatever you want. Whether it be iTunes, drag n drop, double twist, media monkey, windows mwdia Player. They aren't relying souly on itunes it is just a big market and they are giving the option. I have a feeling too that once other companies see nothing is happening to Palm for them doing this maybe MP3 player companies and other companies will also enable iTunes sync. Once everyone does it then what will apple do?
This is actually really syncing, rather than using a crutch to do so. Apple would have to verify by serial number (a daunting task) to further control my computer. And they would risk breaking compatibility with old iPods. Please break my old, old iPod Apple. I dare ya. Prove how that is done for the best interest of the customer.
I'm glad they re enabled it.
I'm not too worried anymore i'm using double twist now. I'm not too sure this is going to end well.
Good for them.
Apple making their software work for ONLY their devices is ridiculous. I wish Microsoft would kick iTunes off their operating system... or not register that an iPod is connecting to the computer that Windows is operating on.
Oh you bought an iPod? Better go buy a MAC.
go buy a mac? more like, "join the 3 people that have zunes........please"
You better bitch out HP then -- their printer drivers don't work with other printer brands. The SOBs!
that is completely irrelevant. Your somment would only make sense if we were pissed because apple wouldn't let us download ipods os.
You better bitch out HP then -- their printer drivers don't work with other printer brands. The SOBs!
It really astonishes me how some people get this concept confused. iTunes is not driver software. It's application software. It's completely different. Windows already has in it all the drivers it needs to handle an iPod or Pre. They're both just USB devices. Nothing complicated at all.
iTunes not working with the Pre is more akin to Microsoft Word not working with a Logitech mouse or an HP printer. Even there, the very fact that iTunes won't sync with the Pre isn't the big problem. The problem is how they chose to go about it. They just got lazy about it. But in doing that, they set a potential precedent for any software maker to purposely exclude hardware devices made by competitors, using the very thing that should make software play nice with devices.
That's not to say that other companies don't block devices from their syncing software (e.g., Microsoft's Zune software), but to the best of my knowledge, Apple is the first to use the USB meta information as a way to do this. And that's what sets the dangerous precedent. It's way too easy for companies to lock devices out this way.
what about videos & the calander syncing?
these last three blogs should have just been one super blog.
i could give an ish less about itunes syncing webOS has way bigger fish to fry if they wanna keep me post oct 11th
what are you a ship jumper?
Jeez just leave it alone. Fuck iTunes and their shit store. There are plenty of other programs for media management and sync out there. Just quit playing their stupid bullshit proprietary game.
Thank goodness! iTunes 9.0.1, here I come! I'm really thankful to Palm for continuing to make this work. As a side benefit, it's also a great spectator sport :)
Really? You are happy Palm is putting you through this hassle? I'd be pissed. I'd want a proper syncing solution, rather than some stupid spiteful workaround.
It's not Palm doing it. It's Apple. Palm already has several syncing solutions that work:
1) USB drag & drop
2) Palm Music Assistant
3) Media Sync (with any number of other clients)
Apple is the one that shut syncing off for the Pre, after Palm built it in on the client side. It' snot really accurate to put the onus on Palm for these problems, when they already did come up with a music sync solution for people that didn't want to use iTunes. It's certainly not Palm's fault that Apple keeps impeding a compatibility that's built-in in the first place. As I've pointed out before, all Apple would have to do to sync with every USB-capable media player out there is... nothing. Any USB music device would be able to sync, if not for Apple's actions.
It might be argued that iTunes shouldn't sync with every music player out there, but there's no doubt as to whose fault it is that it doesn't.
What? Palm advertised that it would work with a third party software that they had no right claim compatibility with. And they did it in a underhanded way. Again I would be pissed at Palm for going about this in an annoying way. How can I rely on a company that has to hack someone else's software to create compatibility, rather than write a simple program to sync my media content.
You can't blame Apple for blocking Palm on this.
1) They don't want to deal with itunes support calls from Pre owners.
2) Their lawyers don't want to deal with the legal problems of having to allow syncing with someone else's device which might not work after a sync. Legally, Apple has to do this.
Palm needs to stop this, write their own sync program, and maybe avoid the inevitable lawsuit that they will lose in the end.
Palm did write a simple program to sync your media content. It's called "media sync" and it is on the Pre. Apple blocked it.
Why? Because they are petty. Not because "Legally, Apple has to do this." That is nonsense.
Apple doesn't have to support other products. This notion that Apple is doing this to avoid having to support Pre owners is ridiculous. First of all, Apple doesn't provide phone support for iTunes unless you have a <90 day old Mac or have Apple Care in which case they support all Apple software. But not third party software. This is a very lame argument folks.
The fact is that Palm came up with a neat, easy and simple solution for people who already have iTunes unprotected media. It didn't hurt Apple in any way yet they felt the need to block it. That is on Apple.
Palm did not come up with a neat, easy and simple solution. If they did, there would be no argument. What they did was make their device look like an ipod to itunes. If they just went through sync services, their product would work and apple would have no problem with them. But if apple doesn't block them then it could be seen as implicitly supporting them and give apple many legal headaches in the future.
Consider this: You are an average consumer. You buy a Pre because Palm advertised that it will sync with itunes. You get it home and try to sync it, but you just updated iTunes a few days before and the Pre won't sync with the new version. Who do you blame? Apple? Palm? I would say Palm because they promised you something that they have no right to promise. Why aren't Pre owners mad at Palm for starting this mess? I certainly wouldn't buy a Pre if this is how Palm runs it's business.
It is totally on Palm!
They had every right to claim compatibility with iTunes, because it was compatible with iTunes for syncing purposes when they released it. It's no different than OpenOffice claiming compatibility with Word. I'm kind of surprised people have such short memories, in this respect.
And this isn't simply about syncing the content of the library. A program doesn't even need the iTunes library to sync non-DRM'ed content (the only kind of content that the Pre can sync, anyway). All of that can be done by reading the ID3 tags -- just as iTunes does to create the library. What Palm does, it does to get access to iTunes itself, as a convenience to its users. This is in addition to the other ways that Pre users can sync their content. It's not some cheap, "Well, let's just use iTunes to sync so that we don't have to create our own software." Palm created their own software. This method just gives Pre users another option.
The only thing that the iTunes software does that is "dangerous" to another media player is the firmware updating. But the Pre still has a DeviceID tag that identifies it as a Pre, so there's really no excuse for iTunes to try and install iPhone/iPod firmware on a Pre (which would almost certainly fail harmlessly, since the Pre can't handle the iPhone/iPod firmware in the first place).
The only reason that Apple wants to block non-iPhones/iPods from syncing with iTunes is because Apple believes it's the iTunes software that makes iPods/iPhones appealing to people. (And I'm not completely sure that's true, at any rate. I think the new paradigm is syncing over the air without a software client.)
It has never been compatible with itunes. Never. Palm made the pre identify it self as an ipod so itunes would work with it. This is not compatibility, it's a hack, and not a good way to run a business. This method can only cause problems for the consumer in the future. All palm has to do is use the xml file that has set up for this very purpose, and stop making their device mis-report that it is an apple ipod. I just don't get why people here aren't angry at palm for creating this annoying cycle of working, not working, working again.
No update for Canada :(
Thank goodness! iTunes 9.0.1, here I come! I'm really thankful to Palm for continuing to make this work. As a side benefit, it's also a great spectator sport :)
palm should just create their own media sync program and open it to all players using amazon's music store, netflix, etc etc. I know there are a lot of other alternatives already, but this itunes cat & mouse game is getting ridiculous.
Palm really needs to make their own software. I have had Blackberry and their sync software was great and their media sync used iTunes play list to sync with you Blackberry. and Now as a current iPhone owner iTunes makes sense. Every company really need to make their software for their own device. BB=BB Desktop Manager. iPhone=iTunes. Pre=????????.
Enjoy it while it lasts, guys.
But Palm have stepped on very dangerous ground here. What they have done is basically say "screw you" to a standards body. Not very big, not very clever.
Have a lovely weekend but expect a s***storm monday when the standards body come down on Palm like a ton of bricks. This is precisely why there are standards and Palm have taken the, in my opinion, stupid approach and actually say that their product is made by Apple.
Have a lovely weekend but expect a s***storm monday when the standards body come down on Palm like a ton of bricks.
More like an ounce of feathers. The USB-IF has no power or authority to do anything to Palm, except preclude Palm from using the USB logo on their boxes for the Pre (which I somehow doubt most people will notice). There's virtually no consequences for Palm for this. Palm writing to the USB-IF about this in the first place was nothing more than a PR move.
The most negative consequences for this are going to be felt by Apple, and not because of the USB-IF. If Apple really wants to stop the Pre from syncing, they're going to have to try a little harder than simply coding in a block on the Vendor ID. I see a lot of firmware recoding in Apple's future, if they go that route, and it won't be pretty.
Yeah like a nasty letter and at worst they won't be able to call the connecting cable a USB cable.
I think there is a great deal more people out there that are angry with the amount of control that Apple has over retail music and media sales. Add to that the fact that they make it a pain in the ass to move the files you own to any device other than Apple devices which gives them an unfair market advantage. If they don't want other devices syncing with iTunes, then remove the bundle with iStore.
Put me down in the camp that wants Palm to continue hacking iTunes sync (until it starts to consume significant resources).
Keep up the good fight, Palm.
Really? Why not demand that Palm create a good sync platform rather than this stupid workaround that will only work until Apple comes out with an update? Why are you not angry at Palm?
Does anyone know if this can sync Contacts from Outlook? That would be awesome!
For now, yes. I understand that Microsoft is working on a way to break the Pre's ability to sync with Outlook. They're getting the gumption to stand up to Palm by watching poor Apple get bullied. Stay tuned.
"watching poor Apple get bullied."
LMAO. :)
There is a couple of ways but the easiest, I've found is to install Google Calender sync and then just sync with google. With it all in the clouds it's easier to sync cause you don't have to connect to a computer at all.
I highly doubt that the "Standards guys" can do anything. The Palm Pre gives the user a choice when a USB cord is plugged in. Just charge, memory stick mode or media mode. (sorry i'm updating right now can't give you the exact choices).
All a "standard" organization can do is decide if they can use the USB logo. They can't stop palm from using USB ports. They can only tell palm they can't put usb compatible on the packaging.
Palm however can fight that because their memory card mode does conform to usb standards. Whatever else palm wants to do with that plug is up to them but as long as they keep that basic standard intact then there is nothing the standards guys can do. Now if palm decided to say screw memory card mode let's just have media mode only then they can come in and tell palm they are not in compliance and can not use the usb compliant logo's and what not.
Regarding apple I am not sure. Palm is on ice IMHO regarding blatantly pretending their product was manufactured by Apple, inc.
I am not too sure about that one. I don't think it's a copyright infringement because I am not sure you can copyright a sequence of text. I know microsoft used a png file as a security descriptor and that ping file was basically "Microsoft" which was protected under copyright. So I could be totally wrong here.
I do agree with others that palm really should just focus on the phone and not itunes compatibility.
I think the reason why they are so focused on itunes is because apple makes it inconvenient for people to get their own music out of the damn itunes software. Most of them dont know this until it's too late.
So, let me get this straight. Palm provides no sync software for their phone. They use some shady tactics to make it work with a third party's software (which wasn't intended to work with it). Predictably, and understandably the third party blocks this unsupported workaround. Then Palm creates another work around, continuing a cycle that has to be frustrating for it's users. All this, and people are praising Palm. If I were a Pre user I'd be pissed.
And they call Apple users "fanboys"...
not frustrated by the situation, just think its funny.
You're not too bright, are ya?
I'm sorry to inform you, but you are a tool. Is it that you really love Palm, or is it that you really hate Apple? Or both? I would like to know, because ad hominem attacks are a sure sign of a tool.
Whatever clown, if it was such a bad thing or if Apple was so much in the right, why haven't they sued!
I'm sure they will... Idiot. (see, I added the idiot because you called me a clown, and I added this explanation, because you are an idiot, and would not understand that.)
I'm a Pre user. I don't use iTunes and never intend to. I'm not pissed, just amused at the fervor this causes even in folks who don't have a Pre, so much so that they post to a Pre forum about it.
Now the apple users posting to a Pre forum bitching about this, now THOSE are fanboys.
First, my whole reason for posting here is, I couldn't believe that people were happy with palm for going about this in a very unprofessional way. If Apple did this kind of thing, I'd say the same thing about them.
Second, Who said I was an apple user?
Third, You are a Tool.
Second, Who said I was an apple user?
You didn't have too. Only a Fanboy would get so bent out of shape over some other phone using the service when it wasn't 'supposed' to.
Your outrage is funny. A little sad, but funny.
I just don't understand people like you. Do you hate Apple that much? Why? Did Apple kill you brother or something?
I'm only posting here to understand the logic of blaming Apple for the failings of Palm. I'm not an Apple fanboy, just a curious tech head who can't understand why Palm would do this, the way they are doing it, and why Pre owners aren't outraged at Palm for creating more hassle for their consumers.
This is funnier and funnier.
I must 'hate' Apple because I don't care if people are using some program I don't use to sync music? Wow, is your mind bent.
I don't give a toss about Apple either way. I don't buy Apple products. I don't care if other people buy them or not. I don't use iTunes or care about it. If other people do, it doesn't bother me. Why does it bother you so very much?
No one has killed anyone. Apple didn't shot my dog, and Palm didn't shoot your cat because they are ("horrors") having one of their phones sync with an Apple system.
Seriously, get out more.
Oh, and if you'd care to point out where I 'blamed' Apple for some Palm failing, I'd like to see it. You are delusional you are so wrapped up in your fanboyism.
I didn't see any Palm failing, and certainly didn't blame Apple for it. Just getting a laugh at the rantings of some extreme fanboys who are going a bit loony.
I'm delusional? I'm just trying to understand the fanboy mentality. What makes you fanboys defend corporations for their lousy business practices. Palm has done some shady stuff to force device support from a third party software vendor. This has created inconsistent sync compatibility and some people on this thread blame the third party software for that. I just don't get that. Why? And why attack me for posing that question? Why are you so invested in this topic? What is your motivation for calling me a delusional, loony, fanboy?
Please, it's a Mac, not a MAC. Keep that in mind when you make your comments. It will keep you from looking extra foolish.
That said, happy to have this again although I've been using Doubletwist. The new itunes was better than holding off for palm pre sync so this is a plus.
Could someone please try Calender, Video, and Contact syncing? My first gen. Nano has been dead for a while, and I never really tried using these features, but if I remember right it could sync Outlook Contacts and Calender to a Nano. If iTunes thinks the Pre is a Nano, couldn't it do the same?
I'm rather technical and a FOSS supporter - but I'm no FOSS zealot, and this really makes me super happy. I use iTunes to manage playlists and podcasts, this was a feature that was advertised by palm from day one. To those that want to spit venom out and say "just find another app to manage your music", well.. bollocks! Palm promised us this and I am not falling over myself to find an alternative solution. I upgraded to iTunes 9 the day it was released because it showed up as a software update and I thought nothing of it. Thankfully I can now update my playlists! Go Palm, keep it up!
See, This is what I don't get. Palm should never have promised this. If they wrote their own software, you could have your playlists, your music, your entire iTunes library on your Pre if you wanted. And if palm did it right this would all be seamless and easy. The way Palm chose to go about this has made you wait for an update to make it work, and let you get your music and playlists again. Why don't you blame Palm for this?
"See, This is what I don't get. Palm should never have promised this. If they wrote their own software, you could have your playlists, your music, your entire iTunes library on your Pre if you wanted."
>>I've been in IT for many long years, so many of you won't remember when the first home user modems were created by Hayes Corp and all subsequent modems were always "Hayes Compatible" and other manufacturers essentially "cloned" Hayes. The same thing happened in the printer world where companies made "HP" compatible printers.
"And if palm did it right this would all be seamless and easy. The way Palm chose to go about this has made you wait for an update to make it work, and let you get your music and playlists again. Why don't you blame Palm for this?"
>>Err..not really. The Pre DID sync with every music solution out there; Windows Media, Napster, Winamp, Rhapsody, including *iTunes* (here forwards referenced as CrapTunes). Prior to crApples 8.2.x update a few months back, they could too. Today Craptunes is the only one that has fought feverishly to prevent the Pre.
I had a Hayes modem. Long time ago... I think it was in my 286 12Mhz. Back when I was in college.
Anyway, Apple hasn't blocked anything. All they have done is make iTunes confirm that the device it is syncing to is what it says it is. The Pre is "lying" to itunes to get it to talk to it. If palm just used the approved method of syncing with the itunes library, there would be no issue.
Why aren't people mad at palm for creating this mess? Do people hate Apple so much that they see any opportunity to get one over on them as some kind of validation of their hate?
I'm not a particular iTunes fan, or Apple fan at all, and I am not a Palm fanboy in any way. But I do see what Palm is doing as a pretty good idea. As long as the pre can sync with iTunes, any pre user has access to the largest music store in the world and probably the most popular music organizer. Palm writing their own software would be all right, but it would be another program to learn, and none of my friends would have it. It could be very handy just to be able to go to any friend's computer, plug in, and open up iTunes. I like that Palm at least gives people that choice.
But, the Pre can't sync with iTunes. Not without a hack. A hack made by palm that has to be constantly updated to work with the latest version of iTunes. And, between update releases, it won't work with the latest version. How is that good for anybody? Why not just create a plugin for iTunes, or a simple program that runs in the background to automatically sync with the itunes library? iTunes wouldn't even have to be running. And you would get access to all your playlists, and music. You could even still use itunes to organize your library. Just not for the syncing with unsupported hardware part. It just makes no sense to me to promise a feature to your consumers that you have no right to promise. As for learning a new program, If you learned to use a Pre...
I'm curious. Why do you even care? By your own admission, you don't own a Pre. Are you considering getting one? If not, why are you making this argument?
You seem to be on some kind of crusade against Palm's behavior. Really, does it affect you THAT much?
Well, I came to this page when I heard that Palm enabled iTunes syncing again because I was curious how they did it. What made me post was my inability to understand why everyone was blaming Apple for the failings of Palm. I'm not defending Apple, I just don't understand Palm's reasoning here. And I really don't get why people aren't complaining about Palm's backwards, and ultimately doomed way of syncing. I think that everyone can see that this is not the way to go about this kind of thing. So I posted my opinion. And I have been called a clown and stupid for doing so. I guess I don't care that much, just trying to understand the logic of some people on this page.
My guess would be that you do care that much.
Actually, I'm bored. And intellectually curious. What makes people rise to this level of "fanboyism". Is it hate for the competitor of their product? Or is it love of the product it self? Why do some windows users hate osx and why do some osx users hate windows. Do they somehow identify with the product (or the culture surrounding the product) so much that when someone attacks it, that they see it as an attack on themselves? I mean really, they are just corporations trying to make money. If they make a good product, that you like, you buy it. Why defend it when it is doing something that is ethically questionable and creating more problems for it's consumers? I'm just trying to understand the mentality.
^ What he said.
I recommend posting all these intelligent questions on a philosophy or a psychology forum....one that is made to analyze this stuff....on the forum we are here to talk tech, here to discuss this phone, not to analyze why ppl do things. Thanks. anyways back to not caring WHY apple and palm are doing this....
Oh, and I would consider owning a Pre when, my phone dies, if Palm wasn't pulling this crap. I've always enjoyed their products before. I've owned a Palm Pilot, Palm III, Palm V, and a Garmin iQ3600 (which was a Palm based GPS). I really liked all of those devices. If I needed a new phone right now and Palm wasn't flaking, I'd totally consider it. But until then, I'll stay away.
Woops, I think I just replied to my own post... oh well.
Honestly, I'm starting to loose faith in Palm. First they claim compatibility to a software which they can't control and witch is MEANT to only sync directly to certain devices. A foolish promise. Palm effectively tries to exploit Apples success.
I'm not an Apple fan, I don't own a single one of their products, but they have success, that can't be denied. Apple could have just let it be after announcing, they wouldn't guarantee future compatibility. That would have polished their image a bit, but they didn't.
So next Palm complains at a hardware implementers forum that a competitors software won't work with their hardware. A foolish complaint. Why would the USB-IF care?
Finally Palm spoofs Apples vendor id and they even use their name in the manufacturer sting, which could violate Apples trademarks.
Sure the USB-IF can only complain about it and if Apple can force Palm to not use their trademark in the manufacturer string is questionable. Palm most likely will get through with this.
I'm personally disappointed about the way Palm handles this. Sure, maybe Palm wants to publicly confront Apple to get lots of PR. A lot of people takling about Palm and Aplle, the Pre and the iPhone in one sentence... again exploitation of Apples success. Palm is just not playing nice here, therefore they loose some respect on my side.
What would really have been cool: Instead of reenabling media sync with iTunes they sould have written a softwre, that syncs the pre to iTunes, like others have done already. And most important: Add Outlook add Thunderbird/Lightning offlne sync. The latter is a real gap in the market and would have made a difference. I never bought an Android device, because of Googles greed for data and it's sad to see WebOS depends on them, too.
Does anyone else find the new itunes excruciatingly slow? and not worth the upgrade. I want to go back to the itunes 8, will the my pre upgrade still work with an older version of itunes?
Craig has a good overview of the situation. I suggest you review the facts before commenting:
http://hunter.pairsite.com/blogs/20091004/
Wow. That sums it up quite nicely. Thanks for the link.
How dare Apple spend millions of their own dollars to create a successful solution between their hardware and software and not give it to the competition for free. Who do they think they are.
How dare they create an Public API and XML file so their competitors can write there own software to sync with the users music files and then not use it to write their competitors sync app for them.
I think all successful tech companies should have to spend millions of their own dollars to write the competitions software for them. It's only fair because they're successful. Right?
Like Apple or not, they owe their competitors nothing. There isn't any Anti trust. There isn't a Monopoly. Apple is just very successful. Last time I checked, it wasn't a crime.
With 50,000,000 iPhone/iPod touch users. I don't think Apple is worried about losing the Pre's smallish user base.
Apple owes them nothing! Write your own software Palm. If you can that is. RIM did.
Palm is just showing how cheap, jealous and small they are. I smell blood in the water.
Pushing someone's buttons too many times tends to bring on a world of hurt. Good luck with that!
