Yikes, what a title! There are five different systems out there to get apps, patches, and themes onto your webOS phone. With each choice comes different features and abilities, and pretty much the only thing they all have in common is that they can all install apps. From there, each installer is as different and comes with its own unique capabilities. So what makes fileCoaster different from Preload, Preware different from WebOS Quick Install, and where does PreUpdate fit into the mix? The chart below should answer your impassioned query in a most comprehensive of manner - it’s up to you to pick the installer, or combination thereof, that fits your style.

correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Preware install themes???
sorry, I was lookin at Boot/Phone themes
Wow! I'm first.
"Who cares jrey86."
I don't. I'm just saying. I guess it looks like WebOS Install isn't that bad? Speaking from a Non-Pre user, but will be a Pre user in the near futre. Come on Verizon.
damn it wvay!!!!
**evil laughter**
Preware has been my #1 choice for the last few months. Prior to that it was filecoaster. WebOS Install is okay, but OTA installing FTW!
Yep. Love Preware too. All of the programs are super easy to use, but it's just something about Preware.
Preware is my #1 choice, Then WebOS Installer - (Both have been updated to work with 1.3.1. update!)
Filecoaster was the first one I used when I got my Pre, then switched over to Preware.
Filecoaster seems to be in need of an update with 1.3.1, it just keeps uploading with the spinning wheel forever!!!
filecoaster does need an update, the dev said it will be out shortly.
+1. Started with filecoaster, moved to preware by installing it with webos installer. now i just use preware. if I ever need to do stuff with a desktop webos installer is the only way.
I was the same exact way. Love Preware.
Preware and quickinstall are the Greatest! File coaster started it all...I like the fact that I can install ipk urls on FC.
I installed a patch on PreWare today and it did a luna restart for me.
I also believe a user can add repositories to Preware. I'm not sure what is meant by custom repositories vs standard repositories.
Preware and WebOS Quick Installer are the 2 I use on a regular basis.
I am positive that Preware has done a Luna restart on mine before. I don't remember which patch(es) it was for...but I am sure it did.
yeah...did a Luna restart when I installed Virtual Keyboard today.
Yup...the Luna restart took about 30 seconds rather than the full 2-3 minutes for a device restart. Screenshot here - http://twitpic.com/q1gq8
Confirmed. I installed the Virtual keyboard in Preware today, and after it said needed a luna restart (NOT JAVA), and that is exactly what it did.
(Vietnamese accent)PREWARE NUMBAH 1!!!And who needs community anyways(Preload),when you've got precentral.net.You guys ARE the shiznit.
There's an app called "luna manager" available in preware that i use when i install patches. it lets u restart luna or java whenever u want so u dont have to reboot.
Installing Terminal Server Plugin from Preware forces a Luna Restart too.
May I suggest a category for self install, or what is needed to install the app on the pre. AFAIK webos QI is needed for to get you started with things like Preware (still?) or you can do some fancy footwork, for the linux minded masochist.
it is soo all win* for us end users.
*i look forward to a time when the use of win and fail in this fashion are out of fashion, perhaps it starts today.
you can download and install preware using the installer from your PC once you put it in dev mode. The installer version of preware is available at http://get.preware.org/
i guess i should note the self installer is only available in windows flavor.
thanks for correcting me!
I wasn't aware of this, as I have been using preware for a while now, and installed when the recommended method was webosQI
Isn't the .jar version of the preware installer at get.preware.org cross platform?
There us a windows version (.exe) and an OS indepandant version (.jar).
It's currently only for version 0.95 though.
0.99 will be out shortly.
version .94 or greater is good. it installs everything as needed and then you can just update it to the latest version via preware itself.
Went to look at get.preware.org, there are no instructions. Do you just connect your Pre to your PC in charge mode and run the installer and press the install button?
Does this install Preware on your Pre without WOSQI?
Note: I aready have Preware but I love it and if I could install it without have to us WOSQI it would be really neat.
yes, just connect your Pre to computer in charge mode and run the installer. It has been a while since i've ran the installer but I think you need to put your Pre in 'dev mode' first.
And yes, now that I look, there is a OS independent java self-installer too.
quickinstall for tweaks like boot themes, dialer background, preware for homebrew apps, patches, themes, etc.
Derek,
Preware accesses *all* repositories.
PreCentral, WebOS Internals, Optware, PimpMyPre, Precentral-Themes, Prethemer.com, Canuck Software.
Note that PreYourMind has been removed by request of the site owner - it is no longer a viable repository.
So you need to make Preware and WebOS Quick Install equal as far as access to repositories goes.
Note that WebOS Quick Install gets all it's packages from the open standard ipkg repositories which are hosted on preware.org - Preware obviously can access all the same repositories that are published on the preware.org site by the Preware developers ;-)
Custom repositories are on the roadmap for Preware, but we are looking at the security implications of that, cause you don't want a rogue webOS application being able to install a rogue feed without the user's consent.
Other than those two points, great article. Thanks.

FileCoaster Just Updated!! works w/ 1.3.1!!! No more constant spinning wheel!! 269 Applications found as of today! :-)
FC updated! Use Preware or WebOS Installer to get update!
Where did you find 1.3.1?
I just updated from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5 which didn't fix anything - still spinning.
I used Quick Install, which accesses the Preware sight so I'm confused, but having a good ol' time watching the ring go round and round.
Eww... A mac. Why don't people ever show PC's anymore?
Ewww.. why would you want to show a PC?
See what I did there?
Derek uses a mac so he took a screen shot of his desktop.
That he does, though he did make the WebOS Quick Install windows a bit larger than life for aesthetic effect.
On the subject of aesthetics, most often Macs are chose for these types of graphics simply because they look better than (in most opinions) PCs. That, and graphics people like moi use Macs.
I think it rocks that the table is formatted like the tables in the 1E AD&D books.
This could be a good topic for the next palmcast.
Preware all the way baby! Thank you Preware for saving my Pre!
I really enjoy preload. Message board is a nice bonus. Also it does have an option for updating apps that works great.
Hi
Quick question -- can these installers be used together or are they separate things?
Thanks
The various development groups work together to ensure compatibility and the best result for the users.

I really enjoy preload. Message is a nice bonus. Also it does have an option for updating apps that works great.
Webos quick install to install Preware. Preware for all else!!
the table is awesome. Preware rocks!!
I personally use Preware and WebOS Quick Install. With those two, you cover most of the rows in the table. Add PreLoad and you cover all the rows.
Application installers are a means to an end, not a religion :-)
The goal is to install applications, themes, patches, services, plugins, etc. - use whatever allows you to achieve the goal that you are aiming for.

Yup... WOSQI and Preware == WIN!
It really is beneficial for webOS users to get WOSQI setup right, because a few other tools depend on Java 1.6 and Novacom. Might as well just get it working off the bat.
If your goal is to get WOSQI and Preware working in no time at all, then look no further...
http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre-tips-information-resources/214451-...
Yup ... i am with WOSQI and PreWare are my choices and most themers choices ...
gotta get my Preload on. Message board rocks.
Preware is rockin' also
Nofiguru
So, wouldn't the developers forums on here count as a "community" for preware, and webosqi? Well and the others too. :)
I must say that they all have their place, they all have strengths and weaknesses. Use the tool that works for you.
Can someone please tell me how to fix filecoaster? I really miss it, and can't take much more of the spinning wheel.
FileCoaster there was an update, check PreWare? Or one of these other tools...
Please Help!
I went into WebOS Quick install and wanted to try out the 5x4 Icon option. At first I didn't think it worked but then I reset the phone, turned off developer mode and the 5x4 was there. Now I'm trying to uninstall it but there is nothing to uninstall. When I go the uninstall function in Device Management the list is empty. I'm especially worried because I know you have to remove patches before we do another update. If you have any thoughts please help! Thanks
webos quick install, uncheck box, remove.
preware, installed packages, remove
preware, emergency patch recovery, webos update!
welcome out of the matrix.
I loved preware until I had to remove it so I could actually install some appstore apps. I guess it was taking up too much space. The fairdinkum app in preware does not work either.
4me PreWare is the best, had no problems!
WOSQI + PreWare cover everything I need. My only minor issue with the two is that they don't seem to agree on which patches are actually installed, but that's a really minor point and something I can easily deal with.
Wll Preware work on O2 Pre?
Yes
i have installed preware and when i tap on the icon it reads on feeds error type error: cannot call method' split'of undefined can someone help please
I am having the "type error: cannot call method 'split' of undefined" also. has anyone had any luck fixing this?
