Hang Up Your Pre By Sliding it Closed: There's a Patch for That Now, Too

If you've been following Milo's "There's a Patch for That!" series, then you know there is plenty of functionality not baked-into the Palm Pre that you can add in. Forwarding text messages, adding pages to the launcher, lighting up the center LED button for alerts, lots of "why the heck doesn't it do that" has been added in, as our own Keith Newman states, "courtesy of someone not from @palm."

Add one more to the list: the ability to hang up on a call simply by closing the slider. It's much more satisfying to end an angry call by slamming that slider shut than tapping a touchscreen. You can already answer calls by sliding your Pre open, now you can end them in the way that seems most intuitive: sliding the darn thing closed.

The patch comes courtesy of samkim of KeyToss. Find more details in our forums - where you should also thank samkim; then get thee to Preware or WebOS Quick Install (here's how to apply patches).

Nice, thanks.

why is a good patch i saw this earlier today in preware and i dont know any one that talks on their pre with the slider open. I see some people doing and it looks stupid.

I tend to keep my phone closed when I receive a call, but open when I initiate the call, simply because I usually use Universal Search or Speed Dial to make the call.

+1

I do the same thing. I might use the kb to make a call, then close it after the call is started. I never have the KB open when on a call. If Palm does add this feature, later, I hope they make it optional :)

No question it is cool, though!

Then call me stupid. I talk with the slider open because it is easier to keep your hands free for typing while you hold the phone between your ear and shoulder. That's part of the reason the phone is curved when open. You know, the same way landline handsets have curved arches.

Not everyone holds the phone to their ear on a call, though. Maybe you're multitasking--typing something (related to the call, or not) while talking through a headset, whether wired or Bluetooth. Then a quick way to hang up--without moving your hand to touch the headset--is good.

I think the idea of hacks/tweaks is great, but its not the most practical way of getting custom features onto a Pre for most people. I really wish either A) Palm would add these features into an update or B) a developer would make an app that has bundled features available for sale in the catalog. This feature, although very basic in use is a godsend for most, so much appreciation to the creator and everyone else working on making the Pre that much better.

This isn't feasible. Because the patches have to be removed before an OS upgrade. And then if you tried to put the bundle back it'd probably fail.

What I hope that Palm is doing is using this community to test the validity of the patches, then taking the best ones and incorporating them into a mainline release. That will work much better than bundling a bunch of them into an app, IMHO.

Have you ever used the Preware app? If I understand you correctly it is exactly what you are asking for. One app that gives you the options on what to install. It way simple, you just pick the patch and hit the install button.

I know this will be a popular patch but who the heck has the keyboard out on calls all the time?? In the event of not touching the screen use the headset to drop the call. The lag issue on dropping the call is resolved so just having a hard time wanting to even try this one :\

I tried LED notifacation, didn't seem to work. This patch is a must, I'm loading it tonight

Did you turn on the Blink Notification switch in the Screen & Lock Settings/App?

It is a better fitting unit to hold when the keyboard is extended due to the curvature of the design. Many people open it to give more real estate for the hand to hold onto. I am really happy for this patch! Thanks for the tip!

I always talk with the slider closed. On the rare occasion I have the keyboard out when a call comes in I close it. So this would hang up on my calls.

After installing it and testing, it does not disconnect an incoming call if you haven't answered it. It only disconnects calls that you've answered. If you have the slider open prior to the phone ringing, and you close it, the phone keeps ringing. If you open it (to answer the call) and then close it, it will hang up on the other line.

I agree w/ DNic. Also the mic is not on the slider so why do people talk into it.

Anyone tried this one yet? Is it something you can toggle on and off? Or just install and then uninstall? hehe I'm kind of on the fence about whether I want it or not. I guess I'm leaning toward 'not'.

Great patch. Thanks. I may be among the minority, but I always make and receive calls with the slider extended.

Just installed it. Works like a charm.

I like the way the phone curves against my face with the keyboard out. Also I know that I will have to push some button or another before it's done so I usually leave it open. Also it helps having it open as my hands are huge.

For me this tweak rocks! Very intuitive.

With that said I think Palm needs to get it together and put the best of the tweaks in their next update.

I like the comment on the need for Web OS to make it possible for us to meet our needs to allow customization not patching.

But, until that day here are two thoughts:

1) A patch for hanging up the Pre would be more useful if it also worked to answer phone calls just by opening it up. For all I know one can but it is not in the manual (p. 88).

2) Another needed patch is always auto answer. If one is driving in the car with a headset, one should be able to set the Pre to auto answer on calls. That way, with blue tooth headsets like the Jawbone, one could have real hands free calling -- at least until hanging up. I guess that is another needed patch.

You can answer calls by sliding the PRE open

“If it also worked to answer phone calls just by opening it up”................... I am with you on this big time. Especially if the palm is locked, it would be really nice to be able to just push slider open to answer……Any patcher out there reading this ;-)????
I also must be in the minority; I ALWAYS have my slider open while I am on the phone.

Unless I am misunderstanding your statement... it has already been answered that you CAN answer phone calls by sliding the Pre open.

Works like a charm. Everytime... you should try it.. Call your self and then slide........

Thanks to all for the great feedback!

Dieter, Thank you for the recognition on the front page!

Kevin, There's no toggle. I think that would make mistakes more likely. It would suck to accidentally hang up on someone, or think you hung up but didn't.

harlan, The Pre already allows you to answer the phone by sliding up.

pointless

your post was pointless.

Idiot.

Good option for those who would like gross motor skill to answer a call (hand motion) instead of a fine one (touch a small part of the screen).

BTW, for those who don't like it (like jordan23945bulls), here's a simple solution - don't install it. Let those who like it, install it and use it. That's what this is all about, right? Customization and flexibility of your Pre. Don't criticize just because you wouldn't use it.

Leave the dictatorship realm to Apple.

@jordan What's pointless is you commenting like that.

Before buying a Pre I didn't consider that closing the slider wouldn't end a call, just seems logical. Great idea for a patch.

good stuff. Nathan Petrelli (or should I say Sylar) will be grateful that the Homicide division won't be hanging on the line when he shut his phone.

Maybe he had the patch already. I mean...he does have "abilities"

AWESOME hack! Thanks

Next on my wish list is the ability to hide contacts. Facebook contact integration in WebOS is great, but I have many 'friends' that a) aren't really friends and b) don't have any real information listed. it would be great to be able to purge some of them from the phone or at least be able to have them out of sight.

I've read this many times, but it's something that I don't really understand. As long as the search is fast, having a gigantic contact list is IMHO an advantage. I never search for a contact in the contacts app. I always use universal search. So the number of contacts that I have just doesn't matter to me.

Is there some reason that I'm missing that it should?

I agree with the facebook/hiding ability... Perhaps it could be based on if you have any additional contact info... IE Google, Outlook etc...

In terms of the slider to close patch... I think it is a great idea... I think it could be even better if there was a way tell it to hang up or not to hang up when closing the slider...

IE perhaps if you are pressing a volume button or center button when closing the slider... it maintains the call.

Just a thought/enhancement to make all happy and have options.

I would rather the power button end the call.

Ditto.

It would be great to also be able to end a call by tapping the power button, I've done so many times, cause it just feels right - I do it when the slider is closed because I've hit the green button to answer an incoming call.

If I've initiated the call - 90 percent of the time I've opened the slider to use search for the contact, so when I finish the call, I close the slider - just like opening a flip phone to answer a call, then closing it to end. I miss that.

Options are great, I like to have lots of options! ;-)

Although, it really should be a switchable optional feature, built into webOS.

Don't quite understand all the negative comments. If you don't open your phone to take calls then you don't need this, you never will and you needn't comment. I, personally, want to thank the entire Pre Patch community for giving us so many useful options. You guys Rock! Thanks

+1
Agreed and well said.

I have been waiting for this. It always seemed logical that if you can answer by sliding up, you should be able to end by sliding down. Thank you so much, samkim! This is definitely my favorite patch.

We need less criticisms and more encouragements here. The patch is free, provides a good option for those who want it, did not get in your way if you don't like it. What's not to like?

This patch isn't necessarily for me but it is a really good idea and if i didn't open and close my phone in the middle of calls depending on where is more comfortable I would add this in a hurry. You guys are great and make this phone even better than it already is.

This is great, I can't wait to get home so I can install it. I always talk on my Pre with the keyboard out. I find it much more comfortable this way. Since day 1 I have opened the kybd to answer and wished there was a way to slide it closed to hangup.

Hey, I like this patch a lot. Not sure if it will take the place as my favorite patch, but it will be near the top.
Thank you.

Universal Search = Keyboard open. Since I have way to may contacts I always use the Search to make my calls and since I am lazy I dont close the phone after the search I just talk on it with the phone open(I like the feel of it). So It would make sense to be able to hang up with the slider. THANKS!! AWESOME WORK. Now I can be cool like the guy on Heroes...

the iPhone has "an app for that", Verizon "has a map for that", and now the Pre "has a patch for that".

This *would* have been sweet for me some months back but as I am an OSK fanatic, I rarely open my phone anymore except for the occasional Org+Sym+R reboot sequence. :)

It's is a kick @zz patch though and I may install it for when others use my phone (they always close it to "hang up" lol)

how do you install these patches

Maybe Nathan/Sylar on "Heroes" had this patch before everyone else and that's how he hung up the phone! (sorry, didn't read all the posts, someone already mentioned this, like I ever have the slider open when on a call)

While the patch is great to have as an option for some people, overall for me the patch does more harm than good.

While it's occasionally useful to be able to close the slider to hang up, there will definitely be situations where you'd want to close it without hanging up (i.e., you needed the keyboard to make a call, but now are talking and want to close the slider so it's easier to talk). In those instances, this patch is not worth it.

But i do agree with the general sentiment that more options for customization is always better.

Haha, such a polarizing patch! I don't mind options, but this feature is definitely not for me. I must be free to open and close my phone at will on a call without side effects. You know, the whole multitasking thing. Tell you what though, if Palm adopts this as non-optional behavior, I'm going to hunt you all down and snap your phones shut in the middle of a conversation!

+1 Good one. lmao.

If palm does make it non-optional I am sure there will be a patch for that making it optional again.

hopefully the europeans will get an update to the same version as US/Canadian Pres soon.
:-\

I don't have a Pre yet but i would've thought that came standard !

Damn how much " Patch Work " does this phone need ? !

Love all these patches. Brings back the good old days of HackMaster on Palm OS.

I am really thankful for this patch. I think this is essential. I installed it on both my wife's and my pre and we love it. Now ending a call while driving is safe!! before you had to look at the screen. Thank you!!

This is what I've been waiting for. Thanks guys.

like the patch, but I've been getting the perpetual update since I installed it... Maybe its one of the the patches I have installed, but I just noticed it after adding this patch, which I did later than most of my other patches...

is this the place to suggest features to add to this patch???

Don't install this patch if you use the Touchstone charger... http://bit.ly/4xxgfd

I run this patch and use the Touchstone charger without any issues whatsoever. I read through the linked blog and I can't duplicate the issue listed there - I can answer calls by picking my phone up off of the charger. In my opinion this is a great patch and can be used in conjunction with the Touchstone with no impact to functionality.
