GSM Palm Pre Spotted in Vietnam, London

A Palm Pre for Europe and AT&T in GSM is the next big thing we're all waiting for. We had a chance to hold one ourselves at MWC in February, but since then Palm has kept the GSM Pre under tight wraps. Not anymore - Enzo has sent in links to photos and a video of the GSM version of the Palm Pre in Vietnam. We can't vouch for what's said in the video (being shallow mono-linguists), but it is a decent walkthrough from what we can tell. The images, front Tinh Té, are as nice as you're going to see, though.

Enzo also notes that Twitter user utku claims to have spotted a GSM Palm Pre in the London tube and given how secretive the owner seemed, we're inclined to believe him.

Now the real questions begin: which carriers, when, and how much?

Thanks, Enzo!

Their 3G doesn't seem to compare in speed to Sprint's EvDoRevA. I got 1.5 Mbps yesterday with 5 bars on mobilespeedtest.com!

Very basic rundown of the phone, nothing special. A sinch for us vietnamese speakers! =]

can we get a translated trascript?

I don't understand why there's all the hype about AT&T. A little over 3 years ago Apple fans were aghast over the idea of being tied to AT&T's network exclusively. In fact at the time, AT&T was listed as the Jesus Phone's biggest weakness. Having been on AT&T network for 13 years leading up to the release of the Pre, I can only say that AT&T's network got significantly worse during the iPhone's tenure.

tmo and palm are not bffs, so ATT is realy the only choice right now.

also, ATT can use this as some leverage with apple who if you are to beleive fan boys, are not happy with att and are instigating congress to check out exclusivity so that apple can break their att contract.

but yeah, the carrie to be on in the US is verizon. get it on verizon will be huge for Palm.

Getting it on ATT is the cherry on top.

I hope palm also sell and unlocked unbranded version.

This a rough translation of what is being said in the video:
"This is Palm Pre phone, GSM version. This is one of the first Palm Pre GSM in the world and arrived in Viet Nam. This is brought back by Khanh, a member of giaima.com forum. The exterior design is no different with CDMA version. This is an unlocked phone and could be used with any carrier. A Mobile Phone SIM is inserted in. We could text, make call and use GPRS signal. All the features are identical to those that are found in CDMA version. The only difference is that this one runs on GSM network. Let's take out the back cover. SIM slot, camera and flash are being pointed to. They then make test calls with a HTC magic. SMS is tested after that. They open up tinhte.com page with GPGS/EDGE. As you could see, it's pretty fast with Edge."

Note: 3G does not exist in VietNam yet. It is being developed and will be launched in the near future.
In the forum, they also noted this is not a "FOR SALE" version, that's why the interior is not painted.

thanks. very helpful.

The Pre is not going to ATT, I do not know why this keeps coming up. People hear of a GSM version and they automatically assume, ATT. The GSM Pre is the Euro world version.

It keeps coming up because it there is a good chance that the Pre IS coming to ATT, just not until after Sprint's exclusivity period ends (speculated to be January 2010).
