Dear Palm: What I'd like in the next update

Palm Pre

We know that webOS and the Palm Pre are 1.0 1.1 products, so we’re going to cut you some slack for now. But that slack is starting to run out, and looking at the competition there are some areas where I think you could improve the Pre to both catch up to and leap frog over iPhone and BlackBerry and Android. So here’s what I'd like to see in the way of software updates before that slack runs out and the real complaining starts.

My list is after the break, and it’s by no means comprehensive. Feel free to sound off in the comments if there’s something you think should be added in!

Oh, and Palm, this isn't an ultimatum or anything. It's a wishlist. Of stuff I want. So consider it a shopping list, and you're the grocery store. Some things we can do without, but others are staple items that we need to get through the week, and if you don't have it, we might have to go across town to the other grocery to get it. After a while, that can get kind of old and we might consider just going to the other store. We don't want to, as it's simply not as nice, but they have a lot of what we need.

Alert Tones. I can only take so much of “da-ding” before I lose my mind wondering if it’s an email or a text message or a low battery alert or... we need the option to change these tones. And not just “pick a new alert tone,” no, the ability to pick different tones for different alerts. And like we can assign specific ringtones to individual callers, the option to assign a tone to an email account (X for Gmail, Y for Exchange, etc) would be great. To a specific contact, even better.

App Catalog. As your  posting of the Mojo SDK and anticipated expansion of the App Catalog would seem to indicate, you’re on your way to getting a full-on developer community going. That’s all well and good, but your application store needs some serious work. First off is speed: while once up it works just fine, the load time is interminably long for something that is more or less just a specialized web browser. Second is content: we seriously need more applications. Yes there's side-loading homebrew fun, but for 90% of your users the App Catalog is going to be their primary source of apps.

Autocorrection Software. While I do really like having a physical keypad, there’s something to be said for a robust autocorrection database. And that something to be said is, "Hey, that's kind of cool."

Cut, Copy, and Paste. It took Apple a while to get it working, but I’ve got to admit, they got it right. We need the ability to copy uneditable text, i.e. a website. Or a received text message. Simply put, this half-measure implementation of cut, copy, and paste in webOS isn’t going to cut it for long (pun only partly intended).

Backup. Either I need an option to back up my applications and data on my computer, or Palm Backup needs to be updated such that when I have to reset/replace my phone I don’t have to spend half an hour reconfiguring all the settings that were lost. That means contact link associations, calendar colors, and third-party application settings. You don’t need to back up everything (like photos and music), but it won’t take a huge server investment on your part to build a more robust back-up solution.

Battery Life. Simply put, it’s not good enough. My Pre - with a Seidio extended battery – still barely makes it through a long day on the road. There are only so many things I can turn off before it stops being useful.

Bluetooth. OBEX. Now. Don’t be all authoritarian on us and not let us send our contact information or files over Bluetooth. This is a smartphone that you want people to use for business things. Like actually exchanging contact information over something other than Facebook. Beside that, OBEX support would let me easily transfer files and the like without hassling with trying to connect to a computer with WiFi.

Calendar Attendees. Roger McNamee said our Pre would be able to track our location and alert meeting attendees that we were running late. While that would be fantastic, we aren’t expecting that option to appear any time soon, perhaps we can start down that path by giving us the option to add calendar appointment attendees.

Camera Options. If my Treo 650 could do it, then my Pre should be able to do it, no? We need the ability to adjust resolution of photos, as well as color options (the old standbys of sepia and black-and-white and the like). If you want to give us some more in-depth options, like white balance and saturation adjustment, or even the ability to adjust just how much post-processing the awesome camera chip does, that’d be fine too.

Context Linking. This is a slightly more advanced request, but this is also a modern smartphone with a powerful operating system. If I enter a phone number, address, or email in a note or memo, the phone needs to notice what it is and give me options to call/text, map, or email with that data.

Email Formatting. This is a two-fold update. One: dark blue is classy and all, but I like basic black as the default. Two: this screwy reply/forward formatting has got to end. When I forward an email to a colleague, I want them to get the same email that I got.

Email Sort. While full email search should be built into Universal Search, there are some search options that need to be built into the email application. Let me sort by more than just date and flagged - how about the option to see just unread messages, or messages from Joe?

External Notifications. If I walk away from my phone and come back a while later and missed a call, plus four emails and two text messages, I have no way of knowing until I turn the phone on. Our enterprising homebrew developer community has figured out how to hack the center button light so that it lights up on new alerts, so we know it won’t be that hard to implement.

Google Maps. It works on all manner of other devices, so it’s time to add Street View and Latitude features to the webOS version of Google Maps. Additionally, transit and pedestrian mapping options would certainly be nice. And as webOS apps are supposed to be saving all the time, let Google Maps pick up right where it left off after closing the card. It’s one of those things to make it just that much faster.

Landscape Mode. It’s nice and all to have it in the browser, but it’s time to start adding landscape mode to more applications, like email, memos, and Doc and PDF View. Also, I need to be able to easily access menus while sideways, what use is an accelerometer-enabled phone if it's handicapped when rotated?

Launcher. We know it can be done, so just flip the switch and let us to add more launcher pages and be done with it.

IM Clients. The framework is there, it’s time to flip the switch and give us more than AIM and Google Talk. Give us Windows Live and Yahoo to start, and then some of the more obscure options like ICQ and Facebook chat.

Media Sync. Apple has taken their ball and gone home, and while a cat-and-mouse game of fixing and breaking iTunes synchronization certainly is fun, especially for us at PreCentral, we’re don't want to have to deal with our media synchronization abilities being broken and fixed all the time. So build in some more options for how we sync our media, or even just build your own media sync plugin for all variety of programs. On that same note, it's a little silly that iTunes is the only way to transfer a playlist to my phone - there's no reason this shouldn't work over USB too.

Music Player. First off we need the option to remember playback locations, especially for podcasts and audiobooks. Secondly, in that same vein, we need the option to scrub along the playback slider (like it’s actually a slider) to scrub through a song.

Notifications. Before I say this, I want to say that the notification bar is absolutely fantastic. It’s one of webOS’s best features, in my not so humble opinion. But... it doesn’t work in landscape. We don’t need a persistent landscape notification bar, but when I get an email while browsing in landscape mode, all I get is a chime and buzz. Add in a landscape pop-up bar just to tell me what happened (and then it can go away) and we’ll be set.

Phone As Modem. You said it was going to work at launch, and we know it can work, but Sprint clearly has put the kibosh on the official solution we know you can implement. Talk to them, we’ll pay if you at least give us the choice. That's more money for Sprint, and we know they’d like that. We need Bluetooth and USB solutions, and if you can get us WiFi hot-spot-ish capabilities, you might just get a big hug from yours truly.

Scroll Bar. The inertial flick scrolling is nice and all, but sometimes I have a really long webpage or list and repeatedly flicking and flicking and flicking gets rather irritating. A controllable scroll bar would do wonders for this qualm. It doesn’t even have to be persistent like the Palm OS of old, in fact I’d prefer it not. Here’s an example: I flick to start scrolling and a translucent scroll bar appears, then I can grab onto it and slide all the way down the page to where I want to be. When I release, it fades away. Magic, no?

Sprint Navigation. It’s nice that I can map a contact’s address directly from their contact entry, but when you have the actually-pretty-decent Sprint Navigation application included, why on Earth can’t I send the address over there for real navigation? Same goes for Calendar event locations.

Syncing Tasks/Memos. Being able to sync my tasks with Exchange is nice and all, if I have an Exchange account. But what of us that don’t? Maybe Google Tasks would be a good option, especially now that it’s out of beta. Additionally, applications like Memos need some sort of syncronization option for PC-based editing, even if that has to be through my Palm Profile.

Text Messages. Forwarding. Really.

Undo. This goes along with the upgraded cut, copy, and paste request. There are times when I hit delete and utter expletives at my idiocy. With a simple undo command I’d live a life with less profanity.

Universal Search. Make. It. Universal. Applications, contacts, and the web are fun and all, but you guys in Sunnyvale need to make it truly universal. I should be able to search my emails and memos and tasks. And if you really want to go wild and crazy, allow third-party applications to join the search mix. All of this information of course means we’re going to need some Universal Search options to filter and order things the way we need them.

Video Recording. It took Apple two years to get it on the iPhone. We don’t necessarily need fancy video editing tools (but we won’t complain if we get them), but the hardware is more than capable of supporting video recording.

Virtual Keyboard. At least for landscape mode. Don’t get me wrong, I love the physical keyboard, but I like options.

Visual Voicemail. Sprint licensed visual voicemail to work on the Samsung Instinct, so it’s time to get them to do it for the Pre. I don’t want to use the excuse of “the iPhone has it,” but it does. So does the BlackBerry Storm.

So there you have it, my extra fun list of what I'd like in webOS 1.1.1 (or 1.2... or 2.0 *sigh*). Of course, I'm not the only one who wants updates - I know you all want it too. So let's hear it - what do you want in future updates?

Thanks to everybody in the Comprehensive List of Fixes, New Features, and Workarounds thread!

Comments

I agreed with most of the complaints. There is one complaint that I have that I have yet to see anyone else complain about (maybe I'm just missing it). I hate the way the e-mail app works. Unread messages are only identified by having the subject line be only slightly bolder than the subject lines of read messages. Please Palm, add some kind of little star or asterisk or SOMETHING to make it easier to identify unread messages. Heck, make an option for a separate folder for unread messages. I don't care. Just do something. The e-mail app is useless when you have to try and guess which messages are read or unread.

Message app. Ok, when I click on someone's AIM name in my contacts list, I expect that I will be sending a message to their AIM name when the Messaging App opens. I know this is something I could get used to and just start checking in the upper right corner before sending a message, but I shouldn't have to. Also, I would like some kind of identifier right on the message itself of what number I sent to. I have had situations where I sent to the wrong number, but then I forget later, and the next time I open the messaging app, I send another message as if everything is normal, and end up sending to the wrong number again. I know, I know. Again, I could just start checking to make sure. But again, this phone is supposed to be useful on the go, so I shouldn't have to.

And video functionality. Come on Palm. How did you end up taking a step backwards on this one? The Treo's were some of the first phones to actually implement video really well. The quality was crap, but the hardware/software on the Pre is a little bit better now. Twitvid is gaining in relevance, as well as YouTube mobile upload. Do you know how annoying it is that some crappy flip phones can do this, but our expensive Pre's can not?

Battery life. Well Palm. I don't know how you're going to fix this one, but you have to. I remember being on a train, bored, and completely draining my phone within an hour of using the Messaging App to talk with people over AIM. It's great that the phone as all this functionality, but those functions are completely useless if the phone can't hold charge long enough to actually utilize them. I could understand it draining faster if I was doing something processor intensive, but messaging? Come on Palm, you can do better than this. Never heard this complaint with the Treo/Centro.

Those have really been my biggest complaints with the phone. The other stuff would be nice to add, but for me, the above fixes are essential to really making this phone something worth boasting about.

@Derek, great list. Although it seems you aren't using a 1.1.0 version phone? Some inaccuracies though with respect to things that you are asking for that are already there. ;)

Alert tones - "And like we can assign specific ringtones to individual callers.."

This is already available as a setting under each contact. You can see custom ring tones for each one if you have enough mp3's on your pre. :)

Auto-correction Software - "there’s something to be said for a robust auto-correction database..."

The palm db handles all of the standard contractions as well as articles, and abbreviations. If you got past 12th grade, I think you'll find it sufficient. ;)

Backup - "Palm Backup needs to be updated such that when I have to reset/replace my phone I don’t have to spend half an hour reconfiguring all the settings that were lost."

A friend of mine who recently (as in a week) exchanged his Pre because of power issues stated that when he got the new phone, he only had to put back his music, photos, and home brew apps. He states the rest of his settings were restored from the Palm backup. YMMV?

Calendar Attendees - "Roger McNamee said our Pre would be able to track our location and alert meeting attendees that we were running late."

While this does not happen *automatically*, you can both map the location of the meeting and contact any or all of the metting attendees within a tap or two.

Context Linking - "If I enter a phone number, address, or email in a note or memo, the phone needs to notice what it is and give me options to call/text, map, or email with that data."

For sure the Pre recognizes web addresses, email, and phone#'s with no problems. Addresses aren't parsed currently.

Email Formatting - "this screwy reply/forward formatting has got to end. When I forward an email to a colleague, I want them to get the same email that I got."

This was fixed in the 1.1.0 release. My email chains are fine.

Media Sync - "On that same note, it's a little silly that iTunes is the only way to transfer a playlist to my phone."

Uh, as the Pre is "Seen" as an iPod, any music managment app will also see it and treat it as an IP. I currently transfer songs, playlists, and video using Rhapsody but Napster, Music Match, WMP, etc. should work the same.

Sprint Navigation - "why on Earth can’t I send the address over there for real navigation?"

On the main Sprint Nav screen, the very last option is "Contacts" and will route you to any addresses found therein. ;)

Text Messages - "fowrard text messages"

Really. Why? I'm mean WHY?? (Spam? Hoaxes? Jokes? Seriously?)

Other than that, great job. (There's enough people hating on the Pre, just making sure all the accurate info is there.)

Please please PLEASE sync my Outlook subfolders automatically. Some of my most important mail is in subfolders, why only just sync the inbox??

Ummm...it does sync folders?? (o.O)

C'mon people PAY ATTENTION here!! I'm sick of people slamming the Pre by not actually LOOKING at the dang phone! :/ (see my above post)

In the email app, you are 99% using FAVORITES to get in\out of your accounts. See at the bottom of the screen the accounts are listed *again*. Click the down arrow next to the account with the folders and you will SEE

Inbox
Outbox
Folder1
(Folder2, Etc.)
Deleted Items (Trash)
Drafts
Infected
Junk Email
Etc.

Repeat for other accounts. Please people, use the phone, go into options, touch everywhere, read precentral, LOVE your Pre! :)

1. Re-fix the pop Hotmail access. 1.1 has brought back the old problem where the radio searches to download mail and doesn't do anything except make the phone very warm and severely kill battery life. The previous update fixed this problem. This is a big deal for me.

2. WMA support. I have a lot of WMAs and am not interested in transcoding. PocketTunes in Classic kinda works, but not good enough. I'll even pay for the codec if that's what it takes. One other thing: fix the album art problem. Folder.jpg should just work. Manually embedding the art myself sucks.

3. Responsiveness. Phone app doesn't respond for several seconds and then activates something else unintentionally. The music app takes a long, long time to load. The camera app has a delayed shutter release. The brower won't refresh if you change radios or disable and re-enable the radio.

4. Time Zones / Calendar. When I book an appointment from the central time zone for one in the Pacific zone, I book it for the time it starts in the Pacific zone, not the central zone. The calendar should never change the time of my appointments for me. The 600 and 755p did this just fine. Also, let's link a contact to an appointment. And whatever happened to the automatic email notification to the appointment attendee about ETA based on GPS?

5. Video. The 755p could do this. In fact, let's just say that everything the Treo could do, the Pre should do - at a minimum, just to set the floor on expectations. We're not moving back in time here.

First off, the pre is great and these suggestions are (mostly) good. We all have our wishlist items but the priority imho should be universal search, email search, and cut/paste. My wishlist includes Outlook sync for Memos, a program like Diddlebug on the Palm, an offline RSS reader and definitely some bookmark on audio files for long podcasts and audiobooks. Thanks!

Please fix the AACplus support for SHOUTcast and Icecast based internet radio stations! It's broke and doesn't work at all!
I'd like to be able to listen to Japan-A-Radio on the go!

I see a lot of comments about memory. Either we need more of it (i.e., a microSD slot) or we need to reallocate it for more room for apps.

How about this: Increase the overall system RAM space so the whole thing runs better; Increase the apps space to about 3 gig so that we have plenty of room for lots of apps; get that VPN or Slingplayer app out pronto so we can access our media from home on our phone, and then we wouldn't have to take up so much space on the phone with it. VPN=the closest thing to heaven on earth...=)

1. Its a phone, it should act like one. My #1 gripe is the phone app is a total POS. I miss more calls than I receive due to slowness, inability to recognize touch, unlocking, etc.

2. The ability for apps to interact with each other. How about file association? If I'm sent an attachment that is a word.doc the doc viewer application should be able to recognize this.

3. Similar to above, allow me to at least put an attachment in the file system. We can add photos to our collection, so this shouldn't be that hard.

4. .wav audio support

5. Browser could use some serious enhancement.
Scroll bar
Sharing - what are we, teenagers? Leave out the crappy "Hey you gotta check out..." when sharing a link. If I need someone to compose my emails for me I will hire a personal assistant (and she will be over the age of 15). While I'm at it, how about the ability to share links, etc. via SMS? Since apps do not interact (see #2), its probably impossible to presume that we could actually tweet a link (with url shortener built in), but if we had SMS support for sharing websites we could share via twitter.
I want the same functionality (menu, back and forward buttons, etc.) in landscape mode that I have in portrait.
Folders for bookmarks
auto-complete in fields
SSL/secure link notification - I have no clue whether its Wachovia Bank or Russian hackers receiving my userid and password.
6. Synergy - in some ways you took this too far, in others not nearly far enough. Yippee, we can sync with Facebook, but I only contact a tiny portion of my 328 friends. Let me delete those I don't want. What happened to sync with facebook calendar (even with the contacts)? It would be great to have their birthdays show up in my calendar. Synergy again - the world does not rotate on a Google axis, open it up to other platforms and services.
7. Contacts - is it too hard to allow us to choose a preferred (default) number to dial or email?
8. Battery life - my phone goes from 100% to shut down in 3 hours of relatively heavy use. Makes the phone almost useless.
8. Calendar is so slow, and so basic, I don't even take it seriously. I have a device in my pocket with all of the information I need to see, but it sucks so bad I prefer to go to my computer.
9. I would like to have a different restaurant-based application for each of the cuisines I enjoy. (just joking - we have plenty, and they all suck).
10. the ability to delete applications we will never use. You stymied us with 8GB of storage space and no removable storage, give us a break and allow us to delete the useless junk you gave us.
11. Better backup - I concur with other posters on this
12. Better media player
13. Flash - weren't we promised this?
14. Customizable launcher pages, with titles (Location Apps on one page, Games, Utilities, Media, etc. and the ability to go to each page via menu function.
15. Google Latitude support (probably Google's problem)
16. Voice dialing, voice memo support. If I had the ability to record voice memos I would have probably several more items you could improve upon.

Thanks for considering.

Oh yeah, you cheap bastids. Supply a power cable with the Touchstone. This really is such an obvious ploy to bleed more money from us I wouldn't buy a Palm cable from you now if you were selling them for $.05.

Thanks.

Oh Hell yeah!

Paid for that expensive touchstone and no flipping cable. What a load of crap! Cheap bastards is definitely the right name to call them.

I Still needed the original cable to charge the phone at home and copy my photos to my PC. (Touchstone stays at office).

Ditto!

Data services in roaming mode.

A few things that continuously irritate me about the Pre is the inability to send forwards, bluetooth without being able to send files to and from my computer or other devices, battery life, calculator without haptic feedback (I use it daily and it turns into a pain without), NO YAHOO AND MSN IM CLIENTS (I only use Yahoo and MSN along with Facebook and Myspace IM, no use for AIM or GoogleTalk), and finally the inability to cut, copy, and paste from web pages, text messages, and other mediums.

I also miss the spell check from my Blackberry Curve and the double tap on the space bar for a period at the end of a sentence...AND holding down a key for an uppercase letter...AND being able to use my phone as a modem when I'm on the road.

I was excited for this phone and it was a step up from my Curve but some days I actually miss my Blackberry.

One other - The center button, that lonely blemish on our phones, the itch we can't quite scratch. What was it for again? Give us full configurabilty just as we have with mouse buttons today, with different capabilities whether in an application or not. Some of the features available would be dependent on the application's development, but a good bit could be provided via the OS. From the home screen I would prefer to turn on or off screensaver with center button (the plastic is almost as volatile as the charging door), maybe someone else would like to launch the camera app.

Makes sense to me :)

Really, if there is a Pre2 in design- PLEASE replace that center button with a 5-way NAV. It would be so much more convenient for:

1) Document/Text editing
2) Games
3) General controls

No

Right now!

Make the keyboard characters F,T,H,V,G act as a five-way navigation button (a la Treo), Pleaaaaase :-(

Not to be an iPhone snob...I jailbroke my phone so I can background apps...and now I'm wondering what's so compelling about the Pre? I know it took Apple 3 years for some of these features but most of the above complaints about the Pre have been addressed in the iPhone. Above, I see a bunch of weird small things and a few big ones that shouldn't be issues. Switch to iPhone and jailbreak? Seems like that would solve all issues. I know I am 100% happy with my jailbroken iPhone. Just my two cents.

I refuse to switch to AT&T! I also refuse to pay more for phone service!

I've used the iPhone, and while it is a great multimedia device... it's terrible as an actual phone. It sounds bad, the calls are tinny, and it loses connection to the over-tasked AT&T network consistently. Yes you can jailbreak the iPhone and add features, but if you are in business making calls where call quality and in-call stability is a necessity... its not the phone to use. I'm not being anti-iPhone in any way and this thread isn't about that... I'm talking from experience. The iPhone isn't designed around being a good business phone, but a multimedia device. That's where the Pre is looking to fill the gap. Just my 2 cents. ;)

I can't afford the extra $2200 dollars A YEAR that it would cost me to switch to ATT for the same service. Sorry, as bad as Sprint's customer service is, no phone is worth taht much money!

BRAVO on the list!! I hope Palm is listening and monitoring site like this for user feedback!

MAKE IT AN IPHONE!!!!!!!! PLZZ!!!!

lol sorry, just had to do it :)

One update that i'd like to see is the ability to turn on/off the notification sounds that play through the earpiece during a phone call that both; A) alert the other person on the line of your just-received message, and B) Blow out your eardrums unexpectedly (exaggerated dramatization, yes please.) I haven't yet found a way to silence it during a call, but then again I haven't tried very hard, I just don't think I should have to. Just my 2 cents.

I didn't read all 303 comments above didn't have time to so not sure if any one has metioned this or not but in the update there should be a feature that when you select a box to type in on the web the window should automatically zoom in on that text. Like I am typing this on my phone now and I have to keep moving the screen over to make sure that I am typing everything right and zoom in and out. The box should fit to the screen and zoom in so a user can see the text better.

I like all your ideas, but these are the ones that are important to me:

* Autocorrection Software
* Full Cut, Copy, and Paste - I've had to retype text from SMS several times already. How annoying.
* Camera Options - digital zoom or cropping ability
* Context Linking
* External Notifications - seriously!
* Landscape Mode - for email especially. We know it's already there
* Music Player - and let us add songs to the playlist
* Scroll Bar - Your proposed implementation is excellent!
* Universal Search - seriously, this should include everything with options to exclude certain things (like email)
* Video Recording - I almost didn't get a Pre because of this. We know the hardware can do it; please add it!

Hotmail Custom Folders
I know there is support for custom folders with Gmail and Yahoo already, but we need support for Hotmail as well. Only being able to sync the Inbox and Deleted Items folders doesn't do us much good.

Mark All Read
When initially syncing up 400 emails from the inbox, they are all in an unread state. Please add in an option to "mark all read" so we don't have to open each one individually.

Hotmail Contacts
Please add the ability to sync up Hotmail contacts the same way the Pre can sync up with Gmail.

sorry didnt have the time to read all of them so i dunno if it was posted. but:

i would like to be able to have have multiple cards for text messaging different people and being able to flip between them. ive been the victim of sending the wrong text to the wrong person quite often. I havent been caught up in anything that would burn me, but it could happen very easily.

The in-call menu needs to be changed so the the buttons r not so close together. I can't count how many times ive accidently hung up on people when i went to push the speaker or the mute button.

basically i want everything everyone mention lol /yim/flash/better music player/video record/prvicay for memo/a better copy n paste/forward txt/etc etc...

I'm going to keep it simple...can you please keep the time & date stamp in my freakin text messages! It frustrates me if I want to know exactly when I sent a text last week & it just says "last week" with no time or day but just a list of all my messages! Ugh! Plus I agree with all the other suggestions! ;)

I would really like to see the contacts syncing get fixed. I don't want all my facebook friends in my contact list.

It would be nice if you could customize your contacts list. Like one page could be your most used contacts, swipe to the side and the next page could be business, swipe again to see facebook. Let me have the option to move them to which ever list I want or even have the same contact in every page.

How about one NO ONE is thinking of...Let me TRULY MULTITASK...

1. how about we can have the same app running as many times as we want...(I want to sometimes access my google and yahoo mail and run them at the same time and switch back and forth. You can only have the same app running once.)
-- shouldn't I be able to have two youtube videos up at the same time? ( they don't have to run at the same time but at least be able to have tabs like firefox)

As an example, I've been reading this post on my Pre in the Web app. It is the only card open. Every time I try to open Twee to view the tweets coming in I get the "Close unused cards" error message. It's hard to multitask (or even task switch!) when you can't open a second card!

I'm fairly new to the Pre, so some of these may be able to be done already , but I haven't figured it out yet. That being said, I love the Synergy feature, but would like to be able to sort/filter my contacts based on their source. For example, I'd like to have a drop down menu in Contacts that has Outlook, Facebook, etc. listed as the sources then when I select one it filters the list and only shows me the ones from that source.

Also I noticed that when I got a message in my Facebook inbox that had a phone number in it, I could double click it and the Pre would load it into the phone and give me the option of calling it or adding it to my contacts. Very cool. However, that same message the Pre did not allow for the same with email address in it. It would seem like that phone nummber functionality could be made to work for any data that comes in which is relvent to a field in the Pre contacts manager (i.e. address, IM, email, etc.). Also, I'm not sure if the same phone number auto-detection works in all apps (i.e. SMS, Email, Web, etc.), but if it works in one it should work across the board.

CALENDAR
Allow a pop up similar to travel sites of the month overview when creating a new appointment. If I want to schedule something for next week, I don't necessarily know that it's August the 27th, but looking at the month overview I can do this.

I've read through most of the posts here, and alot of them are just reiterations, but I echo the media player weaknesses. I've been conversing with HomeBrew developers Kirsche and net2streams about their in-the-works SHOUTcast apps, and we can't get HTTP authentication working. We/they suspect it's because WebOS / the media player does not support such a function. I'm hoping that Palm adds that in, as I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like that working. I've emailed Palm via their FeedBack form about this, and I hope they take it into consideration for a future update. I guess I have Pandora or onboard synch-able music to listen to in the meanwhile.

Also, I don't have a Pre yet. My AT&T contract ends in about a week and a half to two weeks. I like what Sprint offers rate plan-wise, as well as what Palm is offering with the Pre. I plan on getting a Pre / Sprint when this time has passed.

I also echo the speed and stability issues. I don't want to have my Pre slow down for such simple tasks that have been listed here numerous times.

So, my main requests for the next update are:

• Speed / Stability Optimization

• HTTP Authentication Implementation for SHOUTcast radio stations

Other than that, I love everything else about the Pre. Sure I'd like to have more apps like what's available on the iPhone, but all will come with time. I was on the bleeding edge with the iPhone, and I would like to do the same with the Pre.

Also, Derek, sorry if this was asked already, but have you compiled a list (so far or otherwise) of all these things users want and have you sent it to Palm? I think that would let them see what users want in the device to make it better, and it could encourage them to get to it and implement it all, even if it takes several updates and several weeks or months to get it right.

VOICE DIALING: SO IMPORTANT!! ALSO, NEED ADOBE FLASHPLAYER!!

So here's something I've been throwing around in my head. I want a system profile setting. By this I mean, when I plug my Pre into a charger, I want options allowing me to set different system profiles, stuff that autolaunches and such.

For example, when I'm driving with my Pre plugged into the charger, I want it to give me options and when I select car, I want it to automagically launch Pandora, then Nav.

When I'm going to classes, I want to hit a button and have the music level go to 0 (for everything that ignores the ringer switch), have calculator, Evernote, and Memos open up automagically.

This could all be accessed from the currently useless "Sprint" menu when looking at all the cards. I'd really like this to be customizable and I really think that this could be a game changer. Not that it's so unbelievable that everyone will run out and get a Pre but it's one of those things where a poweruser would pick the Pre over its competition.

Another thing I would love to see is a simple flashlight app that turns the Pre's rather bright LED flash into a flashlight. I don't think that should be too difficult, but I don't know and can't code myself.

I had a thought similar to this...

How about it has location sensitive automatic profiles. So, for instance, it knows that I'm at home or at Panera, so it automatically turns on wifi. It senses that I'm on the road in my car, so it turns of wifi, and turn on bluetooth to connect to my car's stereo, and cranks the ringer volume to max.

Best part would be to have it all customizable through the menus.

VOICEDIAL - why does this supposed smartphone not support it? The last 4 phones (none even close to pda funtionality) all supported it and were free from Sprint!!! I like this list but voicedial has got to be done or this phone will always be severely lacking.

voice dialing, voice dialing, voice dialing!

Everything on the list should be standard! Wake up Palm. I am your number one fan but its hard to stay loyal when you arent doing things right.

* PLEASE SPEED UP THE PHONE APP (especially hangup) and speed everything else up. The Pre is still a phone after all.

* Colors should show in the calendar month view. And speed the calendar up. It is almost impossible to use. My previous palm devices would whip right by this one.

Please, Palm, if you do implement auto-correction, or worse, any kind of predictive text entry, please leave an option in place to turn it off. I like my text entry just the way it is right now. I love my Pre, but I don't need it telling me what I'm saying. I'm a capable proofreader.

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT!

Seriously this is simply stuff. I can not get over the fact that my treo 650 had twice as many setting options with only a quarter the abilities as a Pre's Web-OS.

CROP PHOTOS! It makes me think your holding out till we buy the next generation.
CHANGE SNOOZ TIME! REally, I cant do this. My grandmothers alarm clock from the 60's can do this.
DELETE CRAP SPRINT APPS!
HIDE TOOLBAR...I know its there, I dont need to see it.
VOICEMAIL APPLICATION.....pick and choose or delete voicemails from an application. I dont want to dial in.

SIMPLE Stuff that apple is getting right. Don't get me wrong I love my Pre and the ergonomics and flow make iphones users super jealous, BUT.....I still need to use my buddies Iphone to play sick games....screw bubbles (im not in third grade anymore and this isnt the 90's).

Get it right, make everyone pre user proud to brag about the pre.....the pre that I and many others waited for the better part of a year for.

Please don't make us wait for the NEXT GENERATION. These items are an update fix. I dont want to buy another phone that will have the features of my treo from 2007.

1) Task Manager: Show us what apps AND what services (meaning background running programs, ie, the email service, etc) are running . Show us ALL of them. Let us force close any non-essential apps (list the essential ones but don't give the option to close). Let us "disable" and "enable" non-essential services (again show the essential services but don't give the option to close those). Show the CPU usage and memory usage of each one.

This was we can know what's eating our battery life away.

2) Email program: Needs a lot of work. It has problems downloading power point attachments (which when it tries, can drain your entire battery in mere hours). Email can't be sorted. It can't be searched (as far as I can tell). Also allow people to remove accounts and leave the emails there!

3) IM Program: Is ok usually, but it's a bit on the slow side especially if you're running 3 different conversations at once. An option to open up conversations in separate cards seems like an easy way to fix this. (Vs having to do the back gesture, wait for the conversation list to reappear, then touch someone else's name, and wait for that conversation to appear).

4) Photo App: Needs to be a way to add/delete image folders and move images from one folder to the other. Also it's WAY too slow. Both on initial load especially and on displaying images even.

5) Music App: Obviously needs a scrub line so we can jump around in the songs. Also way too slow on load up. Way too slow.

6) Lag: Seems to be a lot of it. I get a lot of lag spikes where it's unresponsive then it suddenly tries to "catch up".

7) GPS fix: Fix the bug that requires a reset to acquire GPS signal.

8) Battery Life: is bad, obviously. From my experience it lasts about 1/2 the time of the Treo. (Well, from personal experience it's more like 1/3-1/4, but I play with the Pre far more than the Treo, I'm guessing). Right now I get to 20% battery after like 14 hours, which isn't too bad at all I suppose EXCEPT my usage is more "light-moderate" and I do a lot of battery saving techniques. Meaning with moderate use and not too much battery saving techniques used, I think the battery will last more like 10 hours.

9) Volume Rocker: Needs to work all the time. Sometimes the volume is off according to the volume rocker, but the phone actually has it on near full volume. I think this happens when the ring tone/alert volumes aren't in synch. If this causes a problem, just force the ring tone/ alert volumes to be synched.

10) More Launcher Pages: Let us organize our stuff better!

11) Sound customization: You know, we've all said it.

12) Copy and Paste: it's almost useless now. You need to be able to copy/paste ANY text. As it is now, you can only copy and paste maybe 10% of what you see.

13) Scrollbar: Actually I was gonna suggest something like Apple's "quick select letters" on the side, but the scroll bar idea described earlier is great. Ie flick, scrollbar appears then you can put your finger on the scroll bar and move it. Useful for music and contacts.

14) Better navigation for text: Right now Apple has the thing where if you hold your finger down, you get a magnified view. Palm doesn't want to use that, which is fine. The current method is pretty neat, where you can hold down the orange button and hold your finger on the screen and drag it slowly. That's not too bad, but it's really hard to move one letter. It often doesn't move or it moves two letters. My suggestion is leave it as is EXCEPT, if the user holds the orange button and taps the middle/top of the screen it moves the cursor directly up ONE line. Taps the middle right, it goes right ONE. Same with left and bottom. Basically holding the orange button turns the screen into a huge D-pad if they tap instead of hold.

Stop making me delete e-mails twice. I should be able to empty the trash in bulk. Do the people at Palm only get 1 or 2 e-mails a day, so swiping from in box to trash, then trash to gone is not a big deal?

When I swipe an unopened message to trash I get a second notification for a new message? WTF, why would moving from one folder to another make the OS think thatI received a new message?

Have you ever heard of winamp? Works great for media sync for all devices.

Virtual Keyboard? On a Palm Pre? That, to me, is what makes the Palm Pre better than the iPhone. 99.99% of Palm Pre users chose this phone because the idea of a touch-screen keyboard is ridiculous for such a small screen. With no physical distinction between the letters, they appear too close together on a touch-screen to be of any use at all. The Blackberry Storm's keyboard is virtually unusuable, and the iPhone's suffers from being too close together- my old iPhone saw more use to the "backspace" button, than any other letter on the keyboard. Which is why I had the iPhone for 4 months before getting rid of it, and it's shameful network.

Dude, not to troll but 90% of your needs are in the iPhone already. Basically, if the iPhone were available outside of ATT, the Pre wouldn't exist today.

blah blah blah, iphone is great, but no way I'm going to att for it. Bring it to Sprint, and I'll buy 3...if I'm not convinced that the pre (or whatever webos phone is available then) is a better option by then...which it propbably will be. In the mean time, ATT=way too expensive.

My biggest problem with the calendar, is that when you switch time zones, the calendar will adjust the time of the appointment.

For example if I know I'm traveling to a different time zones and I have a meeting at 3:00pm, I'm going to put it in the calendar for 3:00pm and know that my time has changed, I dont want to have to adjust the time of the appointment based on the fact that my phone will adjust it later.

Your list is very interesting. I also think that palm appreciate the work you've done. Though, I would suggest adding a poll to each new list. Since it could be hard to realize every issue, let the user decide what are the most urgent or interesting ones.

Just a recommendation.

Greetings from germany

This may seem nauseatingly simplistic in comparison to the other posts... but it would be really nice to be able to put the screen in "sleep mode" while on the touchstone charger. There are times in which i would like to have ZERO light emitting from the device while it is charging, i.e. while trying to sleep...

Text navigation suck too. If I find a typo before I hit send, getting the cursor where I need it to make the correction is a real pain in the behind. I definitely miss the trackball from my Blackberry at those times.

The 2 biggest grips I have with the pre.

1) "missed call" notification. When trying to swipe away the notification, I'd inadvertently call the number 50% of the time or more. Hitting the missed call notification should bring up the missed call log and not call the number. At the very least ask you to confirm that you actually want to make the call.

2) The option should be given to hang up a call after closing the slider. I have lost count of how many times I have placed the phone down after leaving a voicemail with the call still active.

There's a blog item over at PCWorld.com today that Real Rhapsody is going to try and get Apple to approve a Rhapsody to Go app.

WTF, why are they approaching Apple, who will never approve this app that would encourage people to rent music rather than buy, thus taking $$ out of Apple's pocket, and not Palm?

I have RTD on my Creative Zen and it's great. I didn't buy an iPhone mostly because it wouldn't eliminate my need for a separate music player and I liked the potential of the Pre, and the much cheaper service, better.

But I absolutely would have waited if I had known about this, and if Apple approved the app would absolutely have bought the 16gb GS and eliminated one device from my life.

Palm needs to be talking to Real NOW about this.

It would be helpful to be able to search within my calendar. I need to know when my appointment with a certain client is and I currently have to search through each day to locate it.

I know this is small but cmon the alarm clock, i cant even set 2 seperate alarms for 2 seperate days. what if i work 12-11 on sun and mon and 11-10 on tue wed. the G1 has this feature why not the pre. Gotta be kiddin me something so small can make the alarm clock a pain in the butt for someone that doesnt work a mon thru fri shift.

I'd like to see better browser functionality, it should be able to download files and open pdfs and docs, since we do have either viewer.

Man, this is turning out to be an awsome list! I get goosebumps reading it.

I see several posts saying, just wait and give it a chance. I agree and disagree with that stance. I really think that Palm's measured approach is the right way for a cash-strapped corp to do what they are doing. But, on the other hand, they can't afford any black eyes (i.e., bad press due to ANYTHING) or a public perception of doing nothing. What they can do that will help is to seem responsive to end-users and developers alike. That's where a blog like this and all the many varied responses is important. If they read this and act on it, it will be miles in the right direction.

And, one more time: DtG for free, please!

Anybody feel up to summarizing all of our requests? Sorry, I'm to busy. It would be a great document to send to Palm.

-On the Treo 650 you had a customizable side button which you could configure to start any application. I want that for the center button. I don't use it to go into card view, I swipe. Would love to be able to configure what that button does in different apps. In camera mode use it to take photo. Use it to unlock phone when it turns off. Would also be nice to be able to assign press and hold keys like customize press and hold c to start camera app.

-resend text without waiting for it to ask you when you know it didn't go through (as it doesn't go through very often because of coverage here.

-Reply to e-mails using other e-mail addresses you have set up with gmail.

-synch other fields with google contacts. Same with facebook, synch birthday, employer ect.

-Universal search to search for notes in contacts at the very least, notebook, e-mail ect. I can't even search calendar. Unacceptable.

-categories for notes, photos, contacts and sych them with the same categores as facebook/gmail.

-video. photo crop, different resolution, rotate (basic stuff here). Increase/decrease exposure. draw on photos, record memos like the ancient treo 650.

-fix notebook cursor problem.

-battery

-leave bookmark for podcasts/music to pick up where you left off. Annoying to start at begining every time.

Awesome suggestion about the center button -- let's do it! :)

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but wasn't e-mail supposed to be threaded with IM's and SMS as well? I'm almost positive I heard something about that as far back as January.

I still say they should bring back sync with Palm Desktop. I tried Echo, but since I have been adding contacts to my Pre for a couple months, I need a way to sync those contacts back to Palm Desktop. Also, $30 seems like a lot to pay for contacts and calendar only... Maybe MAYBE if it did everything... As for now, I have lots of multiples that do me no good...

BRING BACK PALM DESKTOP!!!

more than 3 launcher pages!

Mark email as unread so I can see it easier when I get back to the office. Or the ability to flag email.

(I gave up reading all the preceding comments. This item itself has become a strong case for scrollbars. I liked the fade-in-on-flick scrollbar idea above.)

1. Credit to Palm: they've put a lot of unseen effort into building the platform. Then they let us have it rather than make us wait for pretty apps. It's open. You can build a kernel from source. Not that you would, but it means there isn't much that we have to wait on Palm for. The 'homebrew' crowd already has answers to many of the issues mentioned in the 1st 100ish replies.

2. A simple idea for cursor movement. At first I too would have said mean things about this Orange-key cursor thing. But lately I'm starting to get how it's supposed to work and even imagining that I could like it. The simple idea that might make it likable: at the end of a line in a multiline chunk of text (e.g. email) do _not_ wrap the cursor to the next line up or down but just hold it at the end of the line - unless/until the path of my drag "gesture" turns up or down. That would make swiping to the end (left or right) of a line very simple, and swiping to a point in the middle of a short line at least easier. As it is, these places (end of line, anywhere in short line) are too hard to get to.

3. Display on Touchstone. Some want it black, some want it always on. I can't recall anyone saying they love it as is. I'm almost happy with setting the onWhenCharging property so that the display, if on, stays on/unlocked until I hit the lock button. But the lock screen draws lots of complaints. So - let's have one of:
. On (no timeout. or maybe selectable with an option for 'none'. maybe drop backlight brightness after a while.)
. Off (dark. like locked when not on the puck.)
. Configurable info display (maybe like the current display by default but very configurable. weather, headlines, music visualization, slide show, kids' Preim on a map, whatever. but locked. maybe basic interaction like pause/play/skip. maybe just run a choosable ap with no launcher/card view to switch away from it)
And some sensible way to handle transitions. Like: on or off/locked off the puck stays that way when placed on the puck. 'power' button switches between on & locked as usual. When "locked", the front button switches between dark and the info display. Whether a locked phone stays dark or switches to the locked/info display when placed on the puck would, of course, have to be configurable.

Water-cooled touchstone? (kidding, but golly this thing can get hot.)

Edit: remove double post

Edit: remove dup.

I would like a voice recorder and then be able to send the recording via SMS, email, chat, etc...

Better phone dialer is a must. They need to make the phone dialer run more quickly (they should do this for the phone as a whole, but I would settle for the phone dialer), change the end call button so you do not actually hit it (on the instinct, ending a call required pushing and sliding, which makes sense) and it should be easier to dial pseed dials and history.

Notification system has a lot of promise, but it needs to be easier to see the subject of each email if you have more than one new email.

I want video , video, video , video, video and video OH and I almost forgot VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!

Late to the party... but is a J2ME JVM in the list?

If I mute the phone with the external switch (usually when I go to the movies), sometimes when I restore the sound it resets the notification volume to be the same level as the ringer volume. This leads to me nearly jumping out of my skin the next time I get a notification.

Echoing some other posts:

1) More supported audio formats. WMA is the most obvious; allows xm/sirius streaming and many ota stations.
2) Scroll bar for table lists in webpages. Example: website with scrolling schedule in a table; there is no way to scroll down.
3) Link PDF reader to web browser!!! Or at least give the option to save a file from a web link
4) That reminds me, the ability to save a file from a web link
5) More control over ordering of lists. I'd like to be able to alphabetize my bookmarks without moving them one by one, for example. Or order my email items. Finger control of every item is cool, but give me some automated choices too.
6) more keyboard navigation short cuts. On the blackberry, "t" takes you to the top of the page, "b" takes you to the bottom. Things like that are so handy.
7) start from scratch on text navigation/cut-and-paste. holding the orange key to navigate makes one handed and closed keyboard navigation with any precision impossible. And that "cut and paste" thing. C'mon.

None of these should be that hard to do (beyond cut and paste and audio format support). And a good way to find more of these sorts of items is to take an old palmos phone and say: "what are seemingly small features that users could use on this treo that they can't do on their pre?" and ask less of "what Iphone features aren't we matching one for one?" WebOS has been revolutionary and adds so much over webos or windows mobile. But Palm should focus more on the small things that make everyday life with a phone easier.

locked scrolling!!!! like iphones have!!!!

up down... left right...

Can I get something much more simple PLEASE:

Give the photocounter some memory so that even if I transfer photo's from my Pre to the laptop, the photo names/numbers wil keep going up.
Otherwise I will end up with a 1000 photo's named CIMG0001.....

And I have more little quirks, why can't you move existing Favorites in Sprint Nav to a new folder?
Talking about the same program, scrolling on screen to scout ahead is near impossible as is zoom by pinch.
And give us an option to plan a route along multiple locations.
Option to avoid tollways would be nice too.

The ring tones and alarm tones are a joke, much to soft and flower powery.
make that button light up also to indicate there is a notification instead of having to switch on screen.

Here's a good one, location based and speed based power and connectivity options. Say the cellphone detects you are moving at a certain speed so it switches on bluetooth to connect to my car and dumps the wifi and EVDO unless I make a data request...

Allright that's enough for today, nobody will read this anyway as my comment is so far down and after publication date.

Have to add this one:

cell work and cell private indication button so I know which cell# is which and easier/temporary unlinking of contact entry cards.

I'm not sure if anyone has brought this up & if this topic has been covered just disregard my rant.

The option to "return to main Menu" (drop down option will work too) or a “back button” after installing an app using the app catalog or a particular app. I’d like to be able to return to the applications main menu or while in use without having to close the application & restarting it all over. As mundane of a request, it’s just annoying having to restart the App Store or a particular application. After a while, I just stop using most applications all together.

I know the application portion is the developer’s area, but seriously come on!

Wow...those are really good features to suggest to Palm. That means to say that this phone has actually the capability to do such things and that's a great expectation coming from you Palm Pre folks. I agree, this phone has a really great operating system. What I can say though is that those features are really good for technology savvy users but I don't think it would be a necessity for majority of the users who are technically challenged. Though there are basic functions the pre doesn't have like forwarding text messages as well as sending files to another Bluetooth phone but so far with those features, technically challenged persons like me would have a hard time knowing which one is which. Yeah, the features mentioned are actually a benefit for users who are good with the phone as well as the beginners but like...would it be boring if the phone has all of the features already? I mean if I were Palm and I have added all the features on the Pre, you wouldn't expect any updates or would not look forward to the new product if I were releasing a different type of unit, right? I mean, I would lose business, people! That is just my point of view though. Plus, it provided opportunities to developers to create tools to help us have those features. What's the point of releasing the SDK for the phone if developers doesn't have the opportunity to develop for the phone's OS anymore. What do you think? Did I make out a point?

I read a lot of these comments and am I the only one who would like separate settings for when you have headphones plugged in? I am sick of having my eardrums almost shattered because the system alert volume is all the way up so that I can actually hear when a text message comes through.

There should be a separate volume control for each application that has an alert sound. In addition to the app specific volume, there should be a button to make the volume relative to the overall system volume or independant (if you like to shatter your eardrums).

I don't mind the DTMF tones but had to mod the file to shut them off because they were linked to the system alert volumes and again - ear drum shattering tones.

To avoid confusion and the hassle of swiping 19 times: If one wishes to remove the entire stack it should use the small box on the left that pops up when there are multiple notifications for that app.
If you Touch+Hold the small box, it would highlight a brighter shade of color to show that you are about to dismiss the entire stack.
Swipe= dismiss 1msg | Touch+Hold, Swipe= dismiss stack

Coming from the centro I really miss the d-pad. Some sort of d-pad (on screen, gesture area, keypad?) would be awsome for those times when I just want to go forward 2 characters, but just can't seem to tap the right place.

I also really miss the keyboard shortcuts to screen brightness and instant dimmer. Would it be so hard to just put it on orange+p like old times. Also independent brightness for the keypad would be nice.

A "right click" scenario would be cool too. i.e. I hold a finger on the gesture area and tap on a link, picture, highlighted text, etc. A little menu pops up with copy, cut, paste, open, save, copy link location, Open In New Card, etc.

oh, and I used to be able to add contacts from google maps, like for pizza delivery and such. And, seriously, change the background in the app catolog and the browser start. It makes the screen look like it has dark spots.

Along with a bunch of other stuff:

i cold heartedly agree with everything you said .this phone is great don't get me wrong but this is suppose to be the best phone on the American market .I mean if the could do it on some of these simple phones why??? cant they do it on this one

If you can add contact groups to this list it will be great . the old palm has it why cant the new palm pre and it should automatically sync with gmail oh and i do not want to use the nickname option . that is not a solution.

Voice dialing over Bluetooth.
Voice dialing over Bluetooth.

I don't want to get a ticket or get in an accident because I was trying to navigate the contacts list while driving.

I totally miss my "Live Search" from the Instinct. I never had to dial information. I know I can do this "sorta" from other apps and typing it in but honestly I want voice activation and I want it now.

Can you have Chinese traditional edition, and let Palm Pre to Taiwan? Also, can you have the edition can synchronize with old version of Palm? Because Palm is what I most need!(I use Sony Clie...)
Thanks!

When typing email, we really need some keys that can mimic arrow keys. When you mistype a word and want to go back later, it's hard and sometimes practically impossible to press your finger on the exact spot between the exact letters that need to be changed. I don't want to click after the word, backspace to delete the whole thing, and re-type. This is solvable. P.S. I love this phone overall.

It's as if you were reading my mind. I have gone over this list 10 times and cannot think of anything you left out that this phone needs that I have also been complaining about and I have only had my phone a week...am I sad or should this phone really be able to do a lot more functions that simple phones do, come on, really! This is supposed to be up there with the iphone, oops did we say that again, but simple phones that are not considered smartphones do things that my pre does not and for the cost it should really do that and more. I join in on the wishlist and hope to see these updates really soon. My fingers are going to fall off if I have to copy and paste one more email and my nerves will go bad if I have to listen to one more chirp when I get an email or text message, can I get some music please?

After sorting through lots of redundant comments I'm surprised to see the one thing that matters most to me that isn't included in the original post:

FIX THE EMAIL PROGRAM! It destroys battery life, and when it's set to MANUAL it still checks the email. I DON'T WANT TO RECEIVE ANY EMAILS IF I DON'T HIT THE CHECK MAIL BUTTON. EVER.

I meant "surpised to NOT see" as in nobody mentioned it.

Actually, solutions to the problems listed are much easier than you think... get an iPhone. Done.

I'd rather have a Pre that did nothing but make phone calls, than ever own an iPhone.

What is point of forwarding a text message? I never got that.

I like to see list of apps below in palm pre these application which are existing in other smart phones.

1)voice dailing.
2)voice search.
3)tv programm apps.
4)banking apps....etc..

I am big fan of flash and I know the flash for the palm pre is yet to release on some time in Q4..waiting for it so that games on flash are awesome..
waiting for it.

i didn't read every post 3 pages of posts so i apologize if someone already said this...

i would love if they moved the simple icon to the top of the screen for text messages. yeah its redunant but i instinctively look at the top by the signal strength meter to see if i have a text, vm, or missed call...not the bottom...

or similar to the iphone...i wouldn't mind if i the message launcher had a little number above the icon to let me know i had say "9" messages...

i've had the phone for 2 days..so far my biggest problems are...

mass text...i have 30 employees and at some point everyone will have one. i don't need groups per say, but an APP that allows to "check off" names in the address book to receive a text would work wonders...

or dialing via name input...on my old touch pro i could use the numeric keypad and it associated the numbers to letters so if i typed 6443 it pulled every mike in my phonebook automatically...

text size...i would like to see more than 4 messages or 4 most recent calls in one view without scrolling...if i could use smaller "bubbles" per say, i could potentially see maybe 6 or 7...maybe more...i like the option of being able to change that...

Mass Texting: I need to be able to send the same texts to multiple people... my Centro could send to 10 people at once... and I am not a fan of the Centro... it can't be that difficult to add in!!!

Also, I've yet figured out how to simply download a file from the internet.

Although I have word documents on my phone that I can read (and not yet edit) when I click on a simple download link for a word document on the web a screen comes up telling me I have no application to open the document... very frustrating!

ohh wow. thats right on the spot. we need this stuff!!!

Dear Santa: By Christmas I'd like to have Adobe Flash support and a voice recorder. I've been a very good boy this year. I promise. I hope you love me enough to make this happen. Otherwise I won't believe in you anymore. That's not a threat. It's a promise. You totally stopped brining me stuff when I turned 15. So yeah I have my doubts already. Please prove me wrong.

Little Timmy

I wish someone would make a app were you can make you number prvt or uncover pvt numbers.

a better camera app were you can record or set a timer that takes your pic and make it possible 2 send videos.

I really hope someone from Palm is paying some attention to this list, and have used this as a starting point for updates... and are prioritizing the fixes... some of the proposed updates seem pretty straight forward...

Wow. Most of my prefs were already covered. the voice dialing has been around since the stone ages, so I would expect that, and hope for it to come, but could live without. visual voicemail I never used, but do want, same with sprint's live search option, camcorder I am dying goin without, same with message forwarding, as with the feature of being able to select multiple pics at one time to send or upload. I also miss the feature of bein able to upload to myspace. I do also hope for the future added option when a new pre may come out with external memory. I also would die for the option of voice memo for when Im driving, seeming texting isnt so much permitted while driving, and being that I am always busy is the main reason I got the phone, I do need the constant note taking option. I would like not just the option to record one side of a phone conversation, but both, and of course, when I am driving and a great song comes on I want to download, I would like that option the ipone has where it recognizes the song- Im sometimes destracted and miss the name when it is mentioned, yet left unknowing of the song I want to download. also, with that, it would be cool if after the song is recognized, I could then get an option to 'save song info to..."(being like some sort of added app where you can store a song list to some sort of voice memo thing, where it stores the name of song, artist, album, and you can click on it to hear a short save sample of the song or something for memory refresh). I am unbelievably happy with my pre, even if it is short of some inportant features, and has me thursting for more, and understand glitches and defects WILL happen with any electronic, especially a new one. I dont think palm, or any company in the world, at that would ignore what the consumers want, being that the phone is made FOR the consumers, I just think that palm is not gonna say to each person wanting to know what is in store, yea, hey, this is what's comin next, because it then loses a competive advantage, and the hype about what's next to come. I think the pre is far from short coming, and is gonna come out with a boom, and for that person up there tryna tell people return their palms, go get an iphone and join another forum.

may not be possible for the pre palm, which is a smart phone lacks the most important thing is to make forwarding text messages when other phones do minor category. If the palm pre wants to compete with smart phones, ought to solve that little problem, for my part will have to leave the pre palm. Therefore, since this by leaving the HTC and SAMSUNG INSTINCT HERO HD; to mention a few that are also good smartphone. thanks

1-media player: ability to take the gap away on gapless albums.

2-themes: it's gotta be easier to change themes. personalizing is one thing i thought my pre would do.

3-pre to come in different colors.

4- why do pics show up in your texts recieved or sent?

5-camera led use it as a flash light.

6-ball led to light up for reminders.

7-a voice recorder

8-could there just be an instalation disk like the palm's in the past that would just take whatever app you have to flop it to your phone. im tired of reading and copying pasting.

we will really appreciate a video camera

I would like the phone to work. The phone is so hard to hear, and it cuts out constantly. The guy in the Sprint store told me that it was bad if you call people with an iPhone. It is bad very often, no matter whom I am calling. And god forbid you squeeze the two parts of the phone together in your hand (or by putting the phone against your chin) -- it will sound like you are underwater.

I am getting a new phone from Sprint tomorrow because my phone can't hear other people unless I use headphones/bluetooth/speaker phone. This recent development is what I call a "complete fail" but it inspired me to write about the fact that I've been irked by the sound quality in the telephone from day 1. I have never ever had such a bad sounding phone.

I think another major "flaw" is that the on/off button does not lead to an automatic locking of the phone. It only locks after 2 seconds, which I think leads to inadvertent danger dialing...

They really need to change the screen locking feature. It just doesn't work.
-- The screen does not lock when you push the on/off button -- until you wait 2 seconds. Off should be off.
-- The screen does lock even if you are on the phone or in the middle of using it for directions.
-- The 4 number screen lock is so awkward, the blue screen is so dorky, and I agree with the user above who said it is way to easy to dial 911 from the locked position.
- the pushing of your emails and alerts is way to "public" and unavoidable unless you have the 4 number screen lock on... there needs to be a way to make the pre discreet.
-- If the screen lock is on, the phone is nearly unusable for the purposes of Spring navigation/Google maps, because you have to type in your 4 number password every time you need to check the directions

And finally, why does the top right hand button (the one that flashes up airplane mode and bluetooth mode) -- come up on the screen ALL THE TIME? My phone is constantly asking me if I want to turn on or off airplane mode. It must be because when you hold the phone there it pops up....

Is it possible to create distribution lists or groups in email on the pre and then save them as maybe contacts? Just like one can do in Gmail or Outlook on a computer? If not, I would like to see that feature added sometime in the future. Thank you!

One of my favorite features of my previous LG Lotus Phone was the Voice Recognition, which would essentially "Read" the names of people in my contacts so all I had to do on the bluetooth or the phone was say their name as it was typed into my contacts list and say "call" before that. It worked in tandem with the bluetooth feature on my Chevy Traverse and meant I harldy ever had to pick up the phone to call someone, I just pushed the button on my steering wheel, said Voice and Then Call followed by the persons name and either cell, work or home, and it called the number. I feel it is so much safer than fumbling around trying to call people using the handheld phone. And it was very very very very very convenient. I want that back!!!!

It is impossible to read this entire thread, so my request may have been mentioned. If so, I apologize in advance.

My main gripe is not being able to search the calendar. Because of this, I must carry my Palm Tungsten T5 as well as my Pre. That way, I can search the T5 to find out "when was my doctor's appt last year" or "when did I last talk with that customer" or "when did we have the roof installed," etc. I should be able to search the calendar for it on my Pre as I can with my T5, since it has my last 10 years' worth of appointments.

It should NOT be part of the normal search, as it would slow most other searching. However, there could be an option in the calendar to invoke a search of just the calendar. Or an option in the search to do a one-time search of the calendar and then reset to preset sources.

As time goes on, it gets to be a chore to enter items into my Pre AND my T5, just so I can search for them.

Perhaps someone could write an app to do this? I'd buy it, if one existed. And if an app already does this, please let me know because I haven't seen one.
