We know that webOS and the Palm Pre are 1.0 1.1 products, so we’re going to cut you some slack for now. But that slack is starting to run out, and looking at the competition there are some areas where I think you could improve the Pre to both catch up to and leap frog over iPhone and BlackBerry and Android. So here’s what I'd like to see in the way of software updates before that slack runs out and the real complaining starts.
My list is after the break, and it’s by no means comprehensive. Feel free to sound off in the comments if there’s something you think should be added in!
Oh, and Palm, this isn't an ultimatum or anything. It's a wishlist. Of stuff I want. So consider it a shopping list, and you're the grocery store. Some things we can do without, but others are staple items that we need to get through the week, and if you don't have it, we might have to go across town to the other grocery to get it. After a while, that can get kind of old and we might consider just going to the other store. We don't want to, as it's simply not as nice, but they have a lot of what we need.
Alert Tones. I can only take so much of “da-ding” before I lose my mind wondering if it’s an email or a text message or a low battery alert or... we need the option to change these tones. And not just “pick a new alert tone,” no, the ability to pick different tones for different alerts. And like we can assign specific ringtones to individual callers, the option to assign a tone to an email account (X for Gmail, Y for Exchange, etc) would be great. To a specific contact, even better.
App Catalog. As your posting of the Mojo SDK and anticipated expansion of the App Catalog would seem to indicate, you’re on your way to getting a full-on developer community going. That’s all well and good, but your application store needs some serious work. First off is speed: while once up it works just fine, the load time is interminably long for something that is more or less just a specialized web browser. Second is content: we seriously need more applications. Yes there's side-loading homebrew fun, but for 90% of your users the App Catalog is going to be their primary source of apps.
Autocorrection Software. While I do really like having a physical keypad, there’s something to be said for a robust autocorrection database. And that something to be said is, "Hey, that's kind of cool."
Cut, Copy, and Paste. It took Apple a while to get it working, but I’ve got to admit, they got it right. We need the ability to copy uneditable text, i.e. a website. Or a received text message. Simply put, this half-measure implementation of cut, copy, and paste in webOS isn’t going to cut it for long (pun only partly intended).
Backup. Either I need an option to back up my applications and data on my computer, or Palm Backup needs to be updated such that when I have to reset/replace my phone I don’t have to spend half an hour reconfiguring all the settings that were lost. That means contact link associations, calendar colors, and third-party application settings. You don’t need to back up everything (like photos and music), but it won’t take a huge server investment on your part to build a more robust back-up solution.
Battery Life. Simply put, it’s not good enough. My Pre - with a Seidio extended battery – still barely makes it through a long day on the road. There are only so many things I can turn off before it stops being useful.
Bluetooth. OBEX. Now. Don’t be all authoritarian on us and not let us send our contact information or files over Bluetooth. This is a smartphone that you want people to use for business things. Like actually exchanging contact information over something other than Facebook. Beside that, OBEX support would let me easily transfer files and the like without hassling with trying to connect to a computer with WiFi.
Calendar Attendees. Roger McNamee said our Pre would be able to track our location and alert meeting attendees that we were running late. While that would be fantastic, we aren’t expecting that option to appear any time soon, perhaps we can start down that path by giving us the option to add calendar appointment attendees.
Camera Options. If my Treo 650 could do it, then my Pre should be able to do it, no? We need the ability to adjust resolution of photos, as well as color options (the old standbys of sepia and black-and-white and the like). If you want to give us some more in-depth options, like white balance and saturation adjustment, or even the ability to adjust just how much post-processing the awesome camera chip does, that’d be fine too.
Context Linking. This is a slightly more advanced request, but this is also a modern smartphone with a powerful operating system. If I enter a phone number, address, or email in a note or memo, the phone needs to notice what it is and give me options to call/text, map, or email with that data.
Email Formatting. This is a two-fold update. One: dark blue is classy and all, but I like basic black as the default. Two: this screwy reply/forward formatting has got to end. When I forward an email to a colleague, I want them to get the same email that I got.
Email Sort. While full email search should be built into Universal Search, there are some search options that need to be built into the email application. Let me sort by more than just date and flagged - how about the option to see just unread messages, or messages from Joe?
External Notifications. If I walk away from my phone and come back a while later and missed a call, plus four emails and two text messages, I have no way of knowing until I turn the phone on. Our enterprising homebrew developer community has figured out how to hack the center button light so that it lights up on new alerts, so we know it won’t be that hard to implement.
Google Maps. It works on all manner of other devices, so it’s time to add Street View and Latitude features to the webOS version of Google Maps. Additionally, transit and pedestrian mapping options would certainly be nice. And as webOS apps are supposed to be saving all the time, let Google Maps pick up right where it left off after closing the card. It’s one of those things to make it just that much faster.
Landscape Mode. It’s nice and all to have it in the browser, but it’s time to start adding landscape mode to more applications, like email, memos, and Doc and PDF View. Also, I need to be able to easily access menus while sideways, what use is an accelerometer-enabled phone if it's handicapped when rotated?
Launcher. We know it can be done, so just flip the switch and let us to add more launcher pages and be done with it.
IM Clients. The framework is there, it’s time to flip the switch and give us more than AIM and Google Talk. Give us Windows Live and Yahoo to start, and then some of the more obscure options like ICQ and Facebook chat.
Media Sync. Apple has taken their ball and gone home, and while a cat-and-mouse game of fixing and breaking iTunes synchronization certainly is fun, especially for us at PreCentral, we’re don't want to have to deal with our media synchronization abilities being broken and fixed all the time. So build in some more options for how we sync our media, or even just build your own media sync plugin for all variety of programs. On that same note, it's a little silly that iTunes is the only way to transfer a playlist to my phone - there's no reason this shouldn't work over USB too.
Music Player. First off we need the option to remember playback locations, especially for podcasts and audiobooks. Secondly, in that same vein, we need the option to scrub along the playback slider (like it’s actually a slider) to scrub through a song.
Notifications. Before I say this, I want to say that the notification bar is absolutely fantastic. It’s one of webOS’s best features, in my not so humble opinion. But... it doesn’t work in landscape. We don’t need a persistent landscape notification bar, but when I get an email while browsing in landscape mode, all I get is a chime and buzz. Add in a landscape pop-up bar just to tell me what happened (and then it can go away) and we’ll be set.
Phone As Modem. You said it was going to work at launch, and we know it can work, but Sprint clearly has put the kibosh on the official solution we know you can implement. Talk to them, we’ll pay if you at least give us the choice. That's more money for Sprint, and we know they’d like that. We need Bluetooth and USB solutions, and if you can get us WiFi hot-spot-ish capabilities, you might just get a big hug from yours truly.
Scroll Bar. The inertial flick scrolling is nice and all, but sometimes I have a really long webpage or list and repeatedly flicking and flicking and flicking gets rather irritating. A controllable scroll bar would do wonders for this qualm. It doesn’t even have to be persistent like the Palm OS of old, in fact I’d prefer it not. Here’s an example: I flick to start scrolling and a translucent scroll bar appears, then I can grab onto it and slide all the way down the page to where I want to be. When I release, it fades away. Magic, no?
Sprint Navigation. It’s nice that I can map a contact’s address directly from their contact entry, but when you have the actually-pretty-decent Sprint Navigation application included, why on Earth can’t I send the address over there for real navigation? Same goes for Calendar event locations.
Syncing Tasks/Memos. Being able to sync my tasks with Exchange is nice and all, if I have an Exchange account. But what of us that don’t? Maybe Google Tasks would be a good option, especially now that it’s out of beta. Additionally, applications like Memos need some sort of syncronization option for PC-based editing, even if that has to be through my Palm Profile.
Text Messages. Forwarding. Really.
Undo. This goes along with the upgraded cut, copy, and paste request. There are times when I hit delete and utter expletives at my idiocy. With a simple undo command I’d live a life with less profanity.
Universal Search. Make. It. Universal. Applications, contacts, and the web are fun and all, but you guys in Sunnyvale need to make it truly universal. I should be able to search my emails and memos and tasks. And if you really want to go wild and crazy, allow third-party applications to join the search mix. All of this information of course means we’re going to need some Universal Search options to filter and order things the way we need them.
Video Recording. It took Apple two years to get it on the iPhone. We don’t necessarily need fancy video editing tools (but we won’t complain if we get them), but the hardware is more than capable of supporting video recording.
Virtual Keyboard. At least for landscape mode. Don’t get me wrong, I love the physical keyboard, but I like options.
Visual Voicemail. Sprint licensed visual voicemail to work on the Samsung Instinct, so it’s time to get them to do it for the Pre. I don’t want to use the excuse of “the iPhone has it,” but it does. So does the BlackBerry Storm.
So there you have it, my extra fun list of what I'd like in webOS 1.1.1 (or 1.2... or 2.0 *sigh*). Of course, I'm not the only one who wants updates - I know you all want it too. So let's hear it - what do you want in future updates?
Thanks to everybody in the Comprehensive List of Fixes, New Features, and Workarounds thread!

Comments
Here add this to the list, and if already stated sorry:
1) Voice Dialing
2) Camera needs a ZOOM at (least 2X)
3) Flash!!!!
4) Space for Apps (way to repartition without losing data or rooting device) I know my Pre is maxed out already
5) Way to delete the crap apps that get installed that I don't use (NFL, NASCAR, Sprint app logo thingy, etc)
1. This would in fact be nice.
2. An on-board camera with tacked-on digital zoom? Yuck. Unless they come out with a full-blown hardware revision (and thus a new Pre SKU, which is unlikely for a while), I'd rather they keep fixes to something that isn't going to make the photos suck.
3. Flash isn't Palm's problem exclusively; it's Adobe's ball. I'm sure Palm's doing what it can to supply technical information, but as for the implementation (read: porting), that's all Adobe. And it's coming this fall(-ish) from what I've read multiple times on multiple sites.
4. Repartitioning for the masses? That's really playing with fire. Look to a third-party for hack'em'ups like that.
5. The Sprint apps are prohibited from being deleted or hidden by the very nature of Palm's agreement with them. No can do.
Great list! ... But when you said "notifications" Derek, I thought you'd say what I've been saying all along. Alas, no such luck. But here's my idea...
LAYERED/STACKED NOTIFICATIONS!!!!
It does me little good to come to my phone and see I have 19 emails waiting for me. I would LOVE it if I could swipe email notification #19 away ......... and then have email notification #18 below it WITHOUT me having to open the email app! Just swipe, swipe, swipe and I'm aware of the messages awaiting me without diving into my email. (P.S. Palm, if you ever release this, make it run SMOOTH and FAST!)
... This would TRULY take the discreet notification system to an unparalleled level. Think about it.
oh god, yes! This is exactly what I'd love too.
I would hate to have to swipe away 19 different notifications regarding my email. If I have more than a few emails I would rather just open the email and see what I have rather than swipe a dozen times. I love most things about the notifications, the light indicator would be nice and having it available in landscape would be nice as well.
I completely agree. If I had to swipe a dozen times because I got a dozen emails, I'd probably stop using email. I'm feeling swipe-hatred just thinking of it!
I would like if each email account showed in its own notification. I hate seeing the generic envelope meaning someone sent an email to my personal account, but I can't see it because work email comes in afterwards. I have to launch the email app and go to my personal account to see who the email is from.
The multiple swipe idea is great. Exactly what I need. If you want to open e-mail when you see a big number, that's fine, just tap instead of swipe. But I get a lot of crap e-mail, so it will be much better/faster for me to be able to swipe-swipe-swipe. Adding multi-swipe would still allow you to tap/open e-mail, while giving you the extra option of just swiping through maybe 2-3 e-mails if you're in a hurry, and would allow me to multi-swipe all the time. It's a win-win add on.
, I should be jumpgate evolution credits to see all the events and tasks I have scheduled for today in text jumpgate evolution items. It should also allow me to see a whole week or two's worth depending on what I want.
Here's what I want to see:
If I have new emails in my Yahoo account, when I click on the notification it takes me to my Yahoo account. If I have new emails in my Yahoo, Exchange, and Gmail accounts, clicking on the notification takes me to my All Emails listing that brings them all together. That way I can glance at all of my email at once instead of having to hit back and go to each one.
I like that idea but agree it I wouldn't always want to swipe that many times. My idea is:
1 finger swipe - see the email below
2 finger swipe - they all go away.
I would love to see them update the camera so we can zoom in and out.
Also I want to be able to delete more than one email or text at a time . I have more important things to do then delete them one by one
Yes, thats the way I always thought it should work!
How about if you swipe to the left it swipes away one at a time but if you swipe to the right it deletes the whole stack.
Both parties are now happy. YAY!
To avoid confusion and the hassle of swiping 19 times: If one wishes to remove the entire stack it should use the small box on the left that pops up when there are multiple notifications for that app.
If you Touch+Hold the small box, it would highlight a brighter shade of color to show that you are about to dismiss the entire stack.
Swipe= dismiss 1msg | Touch+Hold, Swipe= dismiss stack
digital zoom on a phone is completely worthless, you can do the exact same thing with software on your computer. it isn't and actual "zoom" you need optical zoom with lens that move for it to be real zoom.
Anything with the camera or video recording can take a back sesat imo. As much fun as video recording a drunk friend can be, let's be serious, is it that useful.
Let's focus on stuff that is really useful or a problem. Let's fix the headphone port so when I unplug my headset, it knows it is unplugged. And let's fix most of the other issues stated in the original post.
WTF are you on about, it has to, when I listen to Pandora when I unplug it it stops right away, so maybe you want more apps to know??
well just because one fix isnt important to one person, it shouldn't be overlooked. we all love our Pre's. We bought this phone because of the potential we knew it had.... we all want to see certain things upgraded/added to the phone.... i agree, video recording would be nice. hell, i would love to be able to the the animation in pics that are in text messages, not video' but animated text pics, amoungst other things... let keep pushing all these issues, not dismiss each one because we dont need particular ones. they're all important in different levels.
digital zoom is worthless only if you have no brain.
This is a connected device meaning you are very likely to want to email the pic or post it to facebook without going to the "software on your computer."
Two clicks and I can take and email a pic of what I want using digital zoom. Spending five minutes cropping it on the phones software or waiting hours to do so on my PC the hundred times I would do this over the life of a phone makes digital zoom very valuable.
It also makes a massive difference on videos which are not so easy to crop.
Well said. It is the very nature of WebOS to upload the finished photo as you describe. Now, I'd like to also see a savvy developer build a photo editing app for the Pre so that we can crop, color balance, frame, our photos as well.
Re: voice dialing - heartily seconded! My girlfriend is suffering with an ailing Blackberry and I would love to replace it with a shiny new Pre, but unfortunately we live in one of those "must use handsfree devices when driving" states. So voice control (at least for dialing contacts) is an absolute must.
And here are some I'd like to add:
1. Customizability for the behavior of the Palm Pre when it is sitting on a Touchstone. It's nice that the screen dims and shows a clock and all, but it would be nice to be able to configure that. For example, I would like to TURN OFF the screen when it's on the Touchstone - I keep mine by my bed in case work calls me, but having the light on constantly, even at a low level, is really annoying. Other customization options, like being able to set what alert tone(s) sound when on a touchstone would be nice too. (like, maybe someone would want only the phone to ring and calendar appointments to sound, but don't want email or SMS/IM alerts, when on a touchstone...)
2. Autocorrection++. What I mean by this is, add the autocorrection support as described in the original post, but kick it up a notch. It would be GREAT if we could define custom "Shortcuts". What I mean by this is to be able to define a "shortcut" (like, say, "dbsig", and when you type it, the Pre automatically expands it into a longer string (e.g. if I type "dbsig" the Palm would expand that into my entire email signature, e.g. "Donald Burr , Phone: 123-456-7890...". Similar to the way "TextExpander" or "TypeIt4Me" work on the Mac, or the old classic Palm OS "shortcuts" feature.
3. Video Recording. Original poster mentioned this already, but I'd like to add that it would be nice if they could open up the API to third party developers such as Qik or YouTube or whatever.
4. Streaming Radio Station (Icecast/Shoutcast) support. It *almost* works right now - if I tap on a Shoutcast stream, it opens the media player and plays the first 8-10 seconds of the stream. But then it abruptly stops.
5. A scroll "thumb" to indicate how far down a page you've scrolled. If you don't do a full-on Scroll Bar as the original post requested, then for pete's sake, at least let us know visually how far down a page, email, etc. we've scrolled!
6. Syncing Tasks to Google Tasks (this has already been mentione). But how about syncing Notes to Google Docs (word processor)? I'd rather have that than the "sync notes to your PC" option that the original post mentioned. Keep it all in the cloud and all that.
7. A "quickly scroll back to the top of the card" shortcut. On the iPhone, if you tap the "top status bar" (the one with the carrier logo, clock, and battery level indicator) the phone will automatically and quickly scroll back to the top of whatever webpage, list, etc. you were viewing. A similar feature would be SO NICE to have on the Pre as well.
and -
8. MAKE IT FASTER, DAMMIT. It still takes way too long to launch cards, and sometimes the whole phone just "gels" (comes to a grinding halt) for a second or three for no apparent reason. Make. It. Faster. Kthxbye.
I wrote an app for the shortcuts you're talking about. It's called AutoCorrect Edit. Look in the PreCentral Forums at http://forums.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/193362-autocorrect-edit-7-28-.... It will be available to non-rooted Pres soon.
Touchstone behavior -- When a call comes in, the "swipe up to answer" message mostly hides who the call is from, and much of the time results in a missed call. Palm needs to change that screen so as un-hide the caller's info.
You can delete apps if you searched your Help app, you woyld know that. Hold down the orange button at the bottom left of the keyboard and just tap the application you want to delete. If done correctly it will give you the option to delete it. This functionality has been available since launch day.
Yea, You go ahead and try deleting the preinstalled stuff and let us know how that goes.
I love it that people think their rudimentary thought is new and life changing and no one else would have had the same rudimentary thought.
I had about a 40 minute conversation with Palm corporate on 8/19/09, the basic end was that Palm really does not at this time acknowledge the huge (almost 200) point list of things the PRE does not do that nearly every other phone in the Southern California market already does, and that they can not really say if they are currently or will even in the future work on updates and fixes for the phone. I am past the 30 day return period on my phone and am waiting on an inquiry with the PUC and other legal issues to see if I can cancel without the outrageous $200 cancel fee. But I strongly recommend that anyone who still can DO go return the phone and let them know once it is actually supported you 'might' give it another shot.
Well I'm sorry, but that flies in the face of the fact that Palm has been updating the firmware fairly well and easily on pace with other first Gen units. Not to mention that there will likely be apps to address some of these things. Lastly your indication that Palm execs are not wanting to acknowledge customer ideas and easy upgrades is contra to the fact that Palm is looking to this device to help usher a market comeback, not to mention the world is watching the development of this device and tying it to Palm's show of success.
As a previous APPLE iPhone user, Palm is doing much more right than other companaies. I was happy to dump my Iphone
I call BUNK!

A equalizer for the music app please!!!!!!!!!!!
Please Palm we need un UPDATE ASAP we need to see some action Im tired of friends iphone having some basic cool features that the Palm Pre dont have Please!!!!!!!!!!
Please its simple!
1. Photo zoom and edit.
2. Take simple video like ship cellphone.(we want upload them!)please make war to i-phone
3. Copy Paste on web!
4. autoupdates for large developers programs updates!
and if want a real revolutuionnnnnnnn on telecomunicationsss........
Next palm generation (PALM Pre-2).... put camera in frontal area in order to people can talk by speaker and see at same time the people who talk ....or..... see people when chat by videocam like on msn or messenger !
Great job w Palm Pre!
;)
Is there a program that actually plays live audio streams? The player that is currently on the Pre only captures and plays, 30 seconds of live audio streams. I have been a Palm user for years and never had a problem, now all of a sudden you cannot play live audio streams. My wife can listen to them on her crappy Kitona, but I can't on a Pre? AWFUL!!!
Yes; I have one in development and it works wonderfully on my Pre. Look for it in the App Catalog (hopefully) next month.
Wow, awesome! Any details on possible pricing? Also, can you tell me if twit.am/listen works? That's the only stream I would listen to.
I was hoping for a "I Heart Radio" app (so I can listen to www.kfi640.com).
By audio streams you mean internet radio? What do you listen to, what sites do you visit? I can listen just ok with sites like DI.fm or live365, it works just ok with the pre player. But I agree whole-heartedlly that this new Pre sucks in the audio/music department. I hope there is a fix for this or we may just be re-naming the Pre - the Post.
I'd be very happy if I could play these two streams..
http://bayradio.com/kgo.m3u
or
http://kpig.com/
Yes - actually it could use a podcasting ...thing ? Something where I can subscribe to audio podcasts - even video if possible, seems possible based on what the phone can already do ( I agree with you )
You mean like the HomeBrew PrePod app?
There's actually a homebrew Shoutcast client already, which ought to handle about any streaming mp3 station. Have you tried it?
One of the streams I'd like to listen too, KGO, does include their stream on Shoutcast, however for some reason, it does not work. Note: It might work using WiFi but not EDVO, not sure why some streams have that restriction. In my opinion, the Pre should have been launched with these basic abilities to begin with.
Exactly my thoughts! definitely need to add these!
The one that is missing from you list and which is most annoying for me is an update to synergy!!! Specifically I would like:
-ability to sync contacts with other webmail services, specifically yahoo and hotmail
-enable YIM, MSN and AIM support!!
-ability to choose which webmail you would like to make your default. Thus not forces to use gmail. In fact, being able to sync and use multiple webmail simutaneously would be even better
Another thing that I know there is 3rd party support for is Outlook sync support for the desktop. I think it is very stupid for Palm to leave this up to 3rd party developers. I hope Palm realizes the stupidity of this decision and wisely licenses or adopts Chapura's solution for out the box sync... just my .02...
HELL YEAH BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD.
YAHOO AND MSN CHAT
I agree with DJeremyC on the ability to delete unused apps that came with the phone.
Bluetooth keyboard support PLEASE.
But the most important feature for me to keep this phone will be removal of the application usage spying "feature". What applications I use or have installed is none of your (expletive) business Palm.
This has been my complaint since day 1. i generally love the phone BUT, my instinct would do WAY more general things. I mean a motorola razor phone will forward a text message.
You would think a TOP OF THE LINE phone would do EVERYTHING and then some.. I mean, what makes it "TOP OF THE LINE?"
I really thought i was getting a phone that was the latest in technology and was disappointed when it could'nt do simple thing like forward a text message or take videos. They're very basic phones that can do that. Very disappointing!
Excellent post.. please please get these done.. everyone talks about how cool my phone is.. but i cant say its awesome until these little things are done.. basic stuff thats been in cell phones since the beginning almost..
Ditto on the Audible support. Audible emailed me in response to my query a while back and said they were waiting on a firmware revision from Palm. I think that was at 1.02. That could mean it will be a built in feature in future updates.
i soooooooooo agree with you!! you hit the nail on the head,,,BANG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IT IS EMBARESSING
audible.com support!
Amen to that. Audible assured me that they are working on it.
ditto on the Audible support!!!
oh, and voice memo recording, and voice dialing, and...
Audible has been my number one desire since launch!
What about Flash-is it coming as promised at launch?
The ability to attach to a printer.
camera zoom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is #1 demand for me.
Uh, camera zoom can't be done unless there's a hardware change. You could do software digital zoom, but that only makes the picture look worse. You'll have to wait until the Pre 2 and pray for optical zoom.
Go do whoever you have to do a Vlingo and get them to release their app for the Pre. That will take care of the voice dialing issue - for those of us who live in states where you can only use your phone with a headset (while driving), voice dialing is a must!
Oh wait, I thought of more:
-Ability to connect and use a USB hard drive, watch movies, listen to music, etc.
-SMB support.
Yeah! +1
most of these from your list and the others should have been standard offering upon day one. now that i know that some of these are not I will be holding off on getting the phone until they are.... i have already been holding off because it cant do video and I needs that for me and my girl.
Here is my add to the list
Better calendar function. I want my calendar to be more similar to the way the Treo's calendar functioned. Color coding and presentation of the days to do list would be awesome.
Being able to share my calendar info with other Pre's would be nice also. My wife and I use to do it back on the Treo's (hers 755p, mine 700p). It makes life so simple when you can just beam your schedule or even be able to email it. And when you open the email it places it in the calendar like before.
Those are the things I want along with the others mentioned
This is very doable with the Pre. My wife and I setup a google calendar and both sync it to our phones. Its almost real time.
The Pre calendar is a toy: terribly slow, lacks essential views (as in Datebk6), lacks options all modern calendar apps have. It is junk that is unusable for business purposes. If not for Classic running DateBk, I would have returned the Pre. But that cannot by synced. Fixing the calendar should be the number 1 priority.
Due to the type of work I do, I live and die by the calendar, I was dissapointed by how basic the app is on this phone,
Hers is my wishlist-color coding for appts in the calnedae as well as task by categories.
Have task show up on on the calendar day view ( I miss Agendus on my treo 680!)
Have these task sync with google task seamlessly
Have the phone recognize phone #'s, emails amd we pages and have the corresponding options
Why don't b'days forn contacts show up on my calendar as reminders?
Voice memos would help
While am at it, more spaces on the quick launch bar
Media palyer able to search for album art while playing
Virtual keyboard at least on landscape mode
Landscape mode in more apps (adobe reader!)
Scroll bar as mentioned here before
More apps, I have to admit I'm jealous of the Iphone apps store
Other than that I Love my Pre and I'm willing to stick around to see how palm adresses all these issues ( I have no choice for the next 2 years :-)
another thing i would like to see is when in calendar, when u type in a new entry for that day, i typically do work 7a-7p, i would like it to recognize that the event is 12 hrs and would automatically fill in the start and end time of the event, along with the corresponding color, labeled work!
and like stated above, i need color in month view! i cant stand to look at the days and not be able to tell at a quick glance what i have going on
I use Google calendar daily. Due to work I have at about 10 different calenders to view and the calender app is difficult to view this.the view all or only one calendar at a time sux. I need the choice to toggle on and off multiple calenders.
Addresses not linking from the calender app to either google maps or sprint nav must be a silly oversight, I see limited use for entering a address in the calender if I cant map it.
I use Google Calendar and it works fine with the Pre-Calendar. I would like a agenda screen, but that why I use Google. They send me my daily agenda in my e-mail. Also I need better color coding on the monthly calendar. The daily color function works fine. I have six diferent calendars im tracking with no issues.
I totally agree... I miss the much superior functions that my Palm Pilots all had in the calendar...
...repeat events - no monthly setting? no 2 day a week setting?
...when I choose my own date, it would be SO MUCH easier if I could choose from a monthly calendar view like before, instead of scrolling through days, months, etc.
...alarms - I can't choose more than 1 day in advance?
...many others already mentioned
The Pre is lacking so many basic functions that used to be part of the basic Palm setup. I can only hope that future updates will bring these back.
Photo uploads to places other than Facebook and Photobucket.
For the love of all that is holy, please fix the reception. My wife gets 4 bars at home. I get roaming. Other people in my building at work get 4 bars. I get one bar. I would love a Airrave, but I'd like it to just work rather than putting a band-aid on it.
When you're going through that list of Apps to approve, please do a junkie a favor and approve a crossword puzzle app. (twitch)
Let's allow more than 60 apps installed at once, shall we? And increase the "Program Space" as well. My phone with a few homebrew apps (ok, a lot of homebrew apps) complains about space, and out of 8 gig I have 3 gig used. C'mon.
Yeah. At *least* Flickr and Picasa.
YES! YES! YES! You hit it on the head buddy!
How about the ability to listen to WAV files that are attached to email?? I can't listen to my voicemails dammit Palm fix it already!
Seriously the calendar is HOOORIBLE! The floating events are the thing I used most in all my Palm products. Second, a "KEYCAPS" type of app for typing!! I almost took the pre back in the first couple days based on my frustration of the lack of these two simple missing features(actually still on the fence about this). The Pre is fun and beautiful but it needs to also be a great tool. The Centro worked beautifully w/ one hand, I hope the pre moves in that direction.
Agree, along with the features stated above, its slow, the week and month show nothing of any use, the jump to should be in calendar form, why in the world do we have to go to the drop down menu to start a new event? you should just start typing to initiate one, etc. its a child's calendar, useless for business.
I want notifications to work like they used to.
Before, when i got a new email, the notification would give me a preview. Now i have to tap the little enevelope to see what the email is. thats one more tap i didnt have to do before.
At least give me some notification preferences so i can choose which way it works.
And whats up with the little envelope popping up again and again while i'm browsing emails...
music player:
honestly it's not that good.
I have to be able to make playlists on the fly.
Also, i would prefer list view to the weird rotated albums view.
It doesn't even make sense. All the songs are on the same album, with the same picture. Moving the same picture from song to song within an album is not giving me useful information. It's also an inaccurate metaphor.
EQ?
When i get phone calls, they should match the volume of the music and not blow my ears off.
contacts:
needs a way to add tags for sorting. That would solve the over sync problem as well.
Notifications:
if i get a missed call notice, when i touch the notice it opens the min. view. I want to be able to flick it off and clear it. i don't want to have to always open the max view to review items. It's a real pain, for all the small stuff, and even for 1 line text messages.
Otherwise, i'm liking it all. It's a good phone. It will stay that way as long as it keeps on the move.
You can flick ur notifications off...when u tap the icon in min. view and the full notification opens, just slide it off the screen like u would when u delete something. that should get rid of the notifiction without actually bringing up the application
Oh I also want to be able to send more than 1 pic at at time.. Not that is really annoying. All the other phones will allow you to send more than one pic. And our top of the line, State of the art Super Smart phone won't let us do it.
Frankly, almost all of the things listed are enhancements to the existing phone. I need the following broken things *fixed* first:
1) SPEED: The phone is waaay too sluggish. There are times when the phone is ringing, but the interface is so bogged down (doing heaven knows what) that I can't answer the call before Sprint switches it over to voicemail. I'm not talking about doing a ton of things here. I typically have 3 cards open at most. And, when I'm not using the phone, I leave 0 cards open. the OS is just way too slow.
2) Fix whatever horrible thing you put into 1.1 that causes the random shutdowns. I don't typically notice them until I go to use the phone, and then (after having to wait 2 minutes for it to reboot) discover tons of voicemails for calls that I missed.
Regarding random shutdowns, there are other forums here and I believe a short article mentioning that later releases of the PRE have little foam pads in the battery compartment to keep a little more pressure against the contacts, that seems to be the reason that some of the first release phones are randomly shutting off.... just FYI.
Let me throw my 2 cents in with the stuff I care about:
Calendar: Agenda view!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Super bonus points for agenda view on the Touchstone screen (lots of spare room)!!!!!!!!! The accordion calendar is cool. It just needs some tweaks. If a calendar day is completely free say that. Try adding accordion to the start and end of a day (then you get kinda like an agenda except with accordions, especially if you can scroll through days [scrolling past midnight goes to Tomorrow 1AM])
Email Notifications: Please, please, please list each email notification individually. Now if I get 2 email messages, I will only see 1, I have to open up the app to read the other. Many of my emails are mass mailings that I don't want to read. I can clear the notification if I don't want to read it, or tap to open it. This might be a problem is a user receives a lot of mail, but should be an option for some.
Touchstone: Allow me to turn off screen on Touchstone. If I am sleeping I do not want to see light.
Music: I listen to podcasts almost exclusively. Scrubbing please! Remember my spot (or add an explicit bookmark) and delete files (those now that I found PrePod I don't really care about these)
Browser: Make the back gesture work in landscape mode (even if it is the same place on the device and an up or down). Because we have gestures we don't need back/forward buttons. DON'T auto refresh when I go back to page that has been there a few hours. If I wanted to refresh, I would have hit the button. Oh and how could I forget: OPENING ATTACHMENTS!
Backup: Everything! The Palm Pre is the first smart phone that is no computer needed. This is a major innovation! I should be able to log in with my Palm Profile and get a restored device.
Music: Some way to do online (so truly no computer needed). This would be hard since there is no online client due to RIAA bullying.
Photos: Faster loading of photos list.
Visual Voice Mail, Better Battery Life, and Google Maps Street View and Latitude: +1
-Michael Plasmeier http://theplaz.com
These are all great! We need an update to the Bluetooth drivers. It is not consistent at all. It doesn't work with all Bluetooth speakers and will not automatically reconnect to bluetooth devices when back in range. I am on my 4th Pre and all of them have had the same Bluetooth problem.
Battery Life will never be fixed to last a whole day. It is an 1150mAh battery. You can't get any cell phone to run a whole day with this size of battery. This is what we sacrifice for having a smaller sized phone.
We need standard sync options for Calender, Contacts, Tasks, Notes and webpages. Every other platform offers this. Chapura's product is not complete and soon we will have to pay $30 just to have partial syncing ability with Outlook. That is terrible PALM!
oh yeah...
music player:
it's really a pain to get to z.
i either have to type out the band name, or scroll forever.
if only type one z, assume i'm skipping to the z section.
It's really bad.
start with alphabet, and when i start adding more letters update it to the contains "z..." normal mode.
I don't really care how it gets fixed, but it is broken.
If this phone is to be business-ready these are musts for me:
*Calendar must be faster. Much faster. MUCH faster. On my pre, it averages about 15 seconds before I can view the calendar. Compare that to the 2 seconds on my blackberry and 1 second on the iPhone. Seriously, what happened here?
*The phone app is weak. Would love to know how long I was on the phone with a caller. Also, I don't need my frequent calls to voicemail recorded and posted. Annoying.
*Email search. It's almost business phone suicide to NOT include this. Frankly, I want to see a vid of the development team meeting when they decided to omit this. Seriously, what was the reason? Are there any programmers or phone execs out there who can explain to me how Palm expected to be competetive without this function? I'm honestly curious.
I'm trying to be patient but I miss the quickness (and battery power) of my Blackberry. I'm giving the Pre until the end of the year to straighten out.
The call duration feature is in there, it's just been disabled on most or all Sprint phones because Sprint doesn't like it (too many customers not understanding how carriers round usage up, apparently.) You can restore it in about 30 seconds if your Pre is rooted.
Gotta speed up the calendar too. From the time I open the calendar until the gray goes away and I can actually use it...it takes WAY too long. Then I change to another day and have to wait again.
How many calendars do you have in your list? 3-4? Think about when you open the CLOUD Calendar app and it is "querying" 4 CLOUD calendars for the day, and subsequent days when you page out. Try changing view from ALL to the calendar you care about (Exchange, Google, etc.) and then try it then. I think you'll find the speed a little better. :)
(I'm a lead IT Analyst and a power user if there ever was one (e.g. 250+ emails a day and 6+ hours of meetings and appointments) and I stay humping with the Pre at my side.
But it shouldn't be querying them live. It should keep a local cache that it updates behind the scenes. Maybe the past two weeks plus the next three months. Then you can view everything quickly because it's local. This is how the contacts work.
Also, if they allowed multiple color coded Palm Profile calendars like they do for Google, I could ditch Google altogether.
Forward SMS
Forward SMS as an EMAIL (like my Blackberry Curve did)
Refine the GUI so that the interface is more responsive!
ESPECIALLY THE PHONE APP!!!
Too many missed calls or deleted voicemail messages because I hit a key and it takes seconds sometimes for the phone to register my touch.
I second the KEY-CAPS type preference!!!!!
Lots of intelligent and forward-thinking, appropriate suggestions. I want 'em too. I think it's just sad that my wishlist has to start with basic functionality for business/productivity because so many 'duh-obvious' basics aren't even included. Feels like the core Pre isn't even finished to a 1.0 quality OS.... I'm interested in patches for the sorely lacking PIM functionality PLUS productivity apps. Specifically:
- A calendar on the Pre like DateBk6 (holy cow! even DateBk3 functionality would be light-years better than current calendar capabilities!!) I'm shocked that there is no agenda view, no searchability, no easy way to change the date of an appt. to next Wed. without knowing IN ADVANCE what the DATE of next Wednesday it, etc. BASIC calendar stuff!
- And speaking of the calendar, there needs to be ZERO lag time going from day to day. Current calendar performance is utterly unacceptable. "Faster" would still be too slow. INSTANT is necessary.
- A Real Memo App that can be synced to a desktop Memo App plus full searchability, like ANYTHING EVER on Palm OS devices
- A Task program without bugs and with basic chrono or priority or due date sorting. (Show/Hide completed tasks needs to actually work too. Go ahead, change a list of tasks to display "Remaining" and check one off. It STAYS visible! You have to change it to show All, THEN Remaining again and it finally hides completed tasks! = Weak!)
- Improved security on Pre-based data with ability to protect individual records or entire apps or groups of files in an app
While I would love a device with the requests in this article, there are MANY you mentioned which I would ask for only AFTER the device is up to minimal industry standards. (You'd be hard-pressed to find ANY smartphone with a calendar this slow or a worse Task or Memo program.) In many ways the Pre is quite advanced, I'm a fan! But it's like the Pre isn't really a Smartphone... it's a "Savant" phone with some brilliant capabilities coupled with abject limitations in the calendar, memos, tasks, and preference settings.
PLEASE fix the basics that keep this smartphone from 1998 levels of competence, and then I can start worrying about tweaking all the features we'd like to see.
Tasks - Add the Repeat function to tasks like the POS had. Also allow me to sort by priority and due date. C'mon guys. That was a PALM staple.
Today View - Another Palm staple, I should be able to see all the events and tasks I have scheduled for today in text only view. It should also allow me to see a whole week or two's worth depending on what I want.
Birthday / Anniversary Alarms - What is the point of having them in your Contacts if you don't get an alarm and still miss it?
I definitely agree on the birthday feature. There needs to be a way to say "remind me" on contact birthdays. Prethinking...
This is a quick fix…how about the ability to send and or reply to text messages to numbers saved with a *82 prefixed in your contacts. Very minor fix
Reminder Sounds: When you get a calendar reminder while you are on a phone call and the sound should not blasts in your ear. It should be smart enough to know that when you are on the phone that the reminders can be muted so that you barely notice them and are non-intrusive.
Browser: I want the ability to copy images straight from a web site.
I get this same thing with emails and messages also. Even if I have the switch to vibrate! If the other person is talking I have to ask them to repeat what they said, and like wise if I'm talking.
My list:
- Categories and the ability to filter by them in apps like Contacts, Memos, Calendar, Web (bookmarks). Must work in Universal Search and be in the API so other apps can participate. Better yet, let's move to tags instead of categories!
- Voice Dialing - Hey! This is a SMARTphone. Even my old dumb phones had this. Through Bluetooth, even!
- I need to have a way to change the Emergency Number on the Lock screen. Calling 911 when you don't have an emergency is against the law and it's just too damn easy to accidentally dial it. (I've almost done it a couple times already.) If I could change it to my home phone number (which I call far more often) that would be okay.
- Voice Memo - You'd think that would be simple enough.
- Memos app that doesn't suck. Tapping *rarely* works to move the cursor around by small amounts but other apps don't have a problem. Needs Categories (see above). Lose the "sticky note" metaphor - that's *so* last millennium. Also, lose that silly paper curl in the bottom right. Put the color on the menu (or get rid of it all together).
- Calendar and Clock - more options for snooze, 10 minutes is not flexible enough (See Palm T|X)
- Web - memory/garbage collection seems atrocious. I rapidly run out of memory with only the web browser open. It doesn't seem to free up deleted instances until the whole app shuts down.
- Web - Allow the ability to click and hold a link to bring up a menu which would allow me to open a link in new Web instance. (A decent substitute for tabbed browsing.)
- Mute switch - Should *only* work on the external speaker. If I have earphones plugged in (or BT phones) I should still hear alerts.
- Earphone/speaker - When I have earphones plugged in (or BT earphones connected) the external speaker should make *NO* sounds, EVER.
- Touchstone - the phone and the Touchstone should have complementary alignment bumps and grooves. Mind doesn't charge when it's in the initial, magnetically-aligned placement. I have to push the phone down a couple millimeters for charging to kick in.
Preferences - Allow me to remove the time-out for the screen lock when the Pre is on the Touchstone or powered by USB. Let the normal timer kick in when external power is disconnected.
Password fields should *never* be autocapitalized!!!
That's probably more than enough for now. Thanks for the chance to vent.
EDIT: Also, a date chooser that shows me a calendar. I *know* it's next Thursday but I don't know what the number is.
I am not going to pay for phone as a modem solution. I still have my Treo phone that works as a modem. I paid $30 for an app that would work for me. I expect the Pre to work as a modem and I expect that to be part of what I pay.
Just like with my Treo
Am I the only one who is going nuts that I can't stream my radio statons on this phone? NOW! This is a deal breaker for me, and it needs ti get fixed before football season starts.
You do realize that the NFL app will stream live radio of games once the regular season starts, right?
And you can stream radio stations, as long as they're a supported format (mostly mp3 or mp4). It's not really Palm's fault that most radio stations that broadcast on the internet use Windows Media Audio (which is poorly supported in Linux) or even worse, Real Audio (which is poorly supported in general).
Don't get me wrong, I understand your frustration at not getting the stations you want to play (my favorite radio station broadcast as RealAudio for years so it couldn't be streamed on any phone-and now it uses an even worse Flash streaming setup), but this is mainly an unfortunate byproduct of using Linux for the phone's underpinnings. I have no doubt that eventually there will be WMA support eventually, but it might take a while.
That being said, I really just don't get why all of these stations don't just use mp3 or mp4 streaming and instead use such a proprietary codec as WMA.
My local radio station streams via mp3, but all I get is 30 seconds of audio. This stream worked on POS, and it is killing me to not have it working on my Pre.
NO. Do not add email to Universal Search. While it's nice in theory (and I agree entirely that we need search within the email application), in practice it'd be not at all useful and actually more of a detriment to using the Pre as far as I'm concerned.
While it might be nice for when you want to find an email from Bob, when you search an email, you know you're searching an email. Do you really want every single email that you've ever written to and gotten from Bob to come up whenever you're typing his name to call him?
I think most of us here use Universal Search as the primary means of opening applications, making calls, etc. (and if you don't, you should be :p ) and searching emails actually makes it less useful.
I have to totally agree with this. Do NOT add Email to universal search! It would be slow, and a huge mess. There should be a separate search function in Email.
BTW- I have yet to figure out how to search a web page for something. When I load a mile long page and want to find a word, on Firefox I just use control-T. Why can't we do something similar on the Pre?
Agreed
There's a pretty simple solution that would please everyone: make Universal Search configurable, so you can decide exactly which databases it searches. If you want email you can turn it on and off however you please.
I just want the phone to REALLY be able to read my mind like in the commercials. This whole opening the laucher and manualy having to tap the app to open is getting old!
lol you witty sob. that had me laughing.
I need a way to organize my cards... It would be nice to have a weather link that would show me all the weather apps.
Or many card that you could organize and have one page with links to these cards.
I agree with organizing the cards. While we can organize them now, it's a pain to get a notification and then have the card which is already open get moved from where you kept it to the end of the stack.
The phone is so laggy. Implement a friggin GPU API and use it. Running the entire phone/graphics through HTML and the CPU is killing it. You put a good GPU in it. USE IT!
"Calendar overview" for my desktop or lock screen. I don't want to have to open up calendar to realize i need to be across town in 45 minutes with a reminder that isn't scheduled to go off in 15 minutes before it starts. Or if I'm on the phone and someone asks if i can make it to lunch that afternoon. Plus, it just helps knowing what's coming up hours in advance.
I have to argue that speed/stability should be number one. It is so slow sometimes with only 3 apps. Especially when a phone call comes in, it struggles to respond to touch.
just flicking through the list of apps is sluggish compared to an iphone. c'mon Palm, it could be a bit better. show me some improvements
Email being able to read Calendar invites, be able to accept them and add them to my Pre calendar.
I really like this. Sending and assigning tasks via this method would also be cool.
I would love to be able to send my teen his chores and errands. He could simply accept them into his pre as tasks with reminders.
Video Player for MPEGs like Pocket TV
Give us the ability to customize our devices, and how updates to the UI are implemented. Not just some here and there, but everything. I want to pick my own ringers, notifications, wall papers, whether my battery indicator shows a battery or a percentage number, system fonts and colors.
Email and documents must be viewable in landscape. Text in documents and pdf must auto-wrap when zooming.
Make the DtG upgrade that is coming a FREE upgrade. Word processing and Spreadsheets are something that a lot of business users have come to expect to be included on Sprint smartphones. If Palm can't pay for it, then make Sprint.
I could go on, and on, and on. But that would be a good start.
I've already used Google Docs to edit spreadsheets on the Pre. It's not what you'd want to use all day but it's fine in a pinch. Give it a try.
gDocs is not an option because 1.) Security of confidential data 2.) it's not on my phone, and I can't always get a data connection 3.) intellectual property issues [read the tos]
+1 to better streaming mp3 support.
Also, I hate that I can't enter actual time values for calendar events (begin, end, alarm). I don't like the 5-minute increment scroller. I don't like that my two longest alarm intervals for a timed event are 1-hour or 1-day.
Furthermore, when I enter a date for a new event, why am I forced to pick the date from a list of numbers instead of a month-view-calendar?
I'm with you on Sprint Navigation, it's on the phone and included but when you look up addresses it always sends you to Google Maps... possibly Google whipped out a big checkbook to make this happen, but for me I'd like for it to take me to Sprint Nav and get me to my destination..
+1 for all the other comments about the shortcomings of the CALENDAR.
This is the most essential function of every smartphone, and the pre's calendar is seriously lacking. Multiple calendars are nice, but if I don't remember to look at the calendar or set a reminder for an event, it's useless.
Call it an agenda, today view, or whatever else you want, the calendar needs to give you a list of the things you have to do for that day and the next without having to open it. My old windows mobile phone showed me a list of things on my calendar for the next 36 hours right on the home screen. The Pre NEEDS something like this ASAP or it will never be taken seriously as a business tool.
Perhaps PreCentral.net could help Palm prioritize this list of requests by creating a poll for us to vote on the features we'd like.
That is one of the best ideas I have seen, yet.
List every possible suggestion by category, then let users rate them on some scale. Perhaps from -1 (do not want), 0 don't care, 1 would be OK but can wait a long while, 2 nice and can wait, 3 important- do soon, 4 extremely important- do NOW. Or something like that.
I agree about the vote. Excellent suggestion.
Your list is outstanding! Here are a a few of my top priorities:
Hardware
* 16 GB of on board memory
* MicroSD slot
* Button on the side to activate camera function and act as shutter release
* Hole for lanyard strap (handy to keep from dropping the phone)
Software
* Virtual keyboard for landscape mode
* Video recording
* Visual voice mail
* Improved camera options
For me, all these things are great plus one thing-i want better touchscreen responsivness and more fluid scrolling. For the love of God too...plz give us scroll bars!
Something i would like to see is the ability to take a picture by simply touching the screen or pressing on of the volume buttons while in camera mode. Trying to find the little green touch button while trying to take pictures of myself and hot chicks at the bar is damn near impossible...Although i must say i did get a few good clevage shots by mistake because of it!
the space bar takes pictures by default
Here are a few of the updates I would add that drive me crazy.
1) Better Bluetooth HeadSet Support
My 800w sent alerts, ringers, etc... to my headset (everything). Now my stereo bluetooth device is only good for answering calls and listening to music/video.
2) Better Music Sorting with file management, directory preference, and OGG support.
Whoever thought I'd want my audiobooks, mp3's, personal ringtone directory, etc... all lumped into one play list?
3) Video Playback
MP4 only??? What about AVI, MPG, WMV, etc???
4) Syncing of Tasks and Notes with Exchange
It's great that I can update my contacts and email, but Exchange is used for a lot more than that. I miss my notes on my Pre.
5) Onboard File Explorer/Partition Support
Come on guys, I have had this Pre for a short time, and I am already getting memory errors with applications not installing. I have 6.5GB of my 8GB still free somewhere. Let me install apps where I want to install applications, If you want people to use your phone, you'd better change how much "allotted" space is available for applications only, and make all of it available.
6) Customization
It was mentioned above, but I reiterate... It would be nice to have more than a calendar reminder and "lump it all into everything else" alert. Not everyone likes the fonts and text size with no choice to change it. Let me sort my applications on different pages. Give me a most frequently used set of applications; a Today screen with upcoming appointments and recent emails/sms messages would be awesome. I want some better choices, and from what I see... I got bumpcus for custom/personal settings.
7) Text editing Scrolling
I know you got a goofy hit the orange button and press the screen to move the cursor, but give me something more user friendly. I suggest you hold the orange button and and Caps lock which makes the numeric keypad work for right/left and up/down scrolling. Editing my email and SMS on this is a nightmare without better scrolling abilities.
8) Expandable memory
8GB will be ok for today, but in 3 months I'm gonna want more. I want a microSD memory slot option. This phone reminds me of the HTC Touch Diamond that did this, and then realized how bad that was, and fixed it in the HTC Touch Pro.
Please... Please... Palm listen to these requests. It would make me and others so much happier.
Great post Derek! Do you think PALM reads this? If not, any way you can get a copy of this to them?
I would say most of the items in the article and in the comments definitely are on my list, what I would add is that when Im using the music player and listening to it thru the bluetooth, I dont need the music icon in the notification area eating up valuable screen space if I have it in card view so I can surf the web. That said, I would like to be able to turn them off at the application level. There are some that I just dont need to see. If not then just turn the music notification off when its in card view. It doesnt really serve any useful purpose.
For the love of god, you will PLEASE add an audible (and visible) "nag" mode for missed notifications.
As it is now, I am missing important text messages, voicemail notifications, and missed call notifications. Unlike my Treo (with Treoalretmgr) or my pager, the Pre beeps ONCE and ONLY ONCE when you miss something... and that is it! No blinky lights, no chime every few minutes... nothing!
I agree!! Even my old iDEN phones can do this!!
Let us choose the alert tone we want for text mesages, etc... and then a beep every minute or two until we respond to the phone that we know there was a missed alert!
I'd like them to fix this issue: http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/195507-pre-randomly-shutting-off-after-1-1-a-3.html
very nice list!!!! Everyone should email Palm/Sprint with these requests.
I agree with your entire article!!!
very nice list!!!! Everyone should email Palm/Sprint with these requests.
I agree with your entire article!!!
1. MUSIC PLAYER!!! needed improvements:
-better navigation,
-podcasts,
-playlist support,
-recognize "jazz" and Jazz" are the same.
-A search meter.
-Save my place when i change songs.
-Don't go from "genre" to "hip-hop" to 500 "indiviual songs" go "genre" to "hip-hop" (same as Hip-Hop palm people) to "artist" to "album" to "song" and if you want you can just have "all" at the top of the menus for people that want all. imagine when the phones with 32 64 GBs get released and sifting through all the individual songs? renders genre annoying best.
-if you're going to compete with iphone be as good as they are.
2. Copy and paste ANY text.
3. autocomplete with an editable dictionary.
4. Flash so i can listen to local online sports radio feeds?
5. i'd like to be able to type. U.S.A. without it automatically changing to "you". Quite annoying when i'm in the middle of numerous text rants about why the U.S. can't fricking pass the ball when playing Mexico.
It's a good phone but the media player lacks attention to detail. Tons of these guys came from apple. Don't be ashamed! Copy what they are doing good and toss what they do bad but don't try to reinvent the wheel.
1. flash (apparently comming
2. two-way calendar sync with google cal
3. Media Sync option
4. Memo & Task Sync Options
5. Video Capture
6. True Cut & Paste
7. Ability to add more than 4 apps to launch bar
8. Ability to turn off screen during touchstone charge
9. Not have to punch in PIN to access alarm when it goes off
10. Select tones for various notifications
"7. Ability to add more than 4 apps to launch bar"
most definitely. I was thinking what's the point of being able to drag the launch bar up if it doesnt scroll through more than what's seen already. That feature was demoed alot and now i think it's a sinceless feature. Now being able to add more and dragging up to scroll through them would make it a very nice and useful feature.
Oh.. here's another one. Work on proper support for CURRENT BT headphones especially A2DP models. The compatible list that Palm refers everyone to, doesnt contain a stereo BT headset newer than 2007. The frustrating issue is that your launch partner actually RECOMMENDS the Altec Lansing Backbeat 903, which works but is quirky. Issues like this reflect on the phone, not the headset.
VOICE DIALING!!!!!!

Sorry. I finally just flicked through the multitude so I don't know if it has been stated yet.
I need more volume in any app that plays back sound: music app, video app, youtube. I'm trying to drown out the sounds of the outsie world. No can do with the current volume governor.
PocketTunes on all my old palm devices allowed to boost an already decent upper limit.
Let me raise the volume as loud as I want it to go.
Thank you very much.
Actually, I find that I can easily get enough volume with music, video, etc.
My main problem is that there is not enough *granularity* in the volume control. One click up is too loud, one click down is too soft. One would think with 9 steps, it wouldn't be a problem... but the lower end of the volume scale is wasted because it is so soft it is next to useless.
And.... wouldn't it be nice to be able to use the center button when the phone is playing music but the screen is off? Perhaps one click to play or pause, two clicks to jump to the next song?? Some of us use headphones that don't have the Palm-specific button on them...

Im dying with the excuse for a calender program that PRE brings!
I agree with what a lot of you have said but I am most frustrated by the lack of wireless support on the Pre. Specifically, my university uses PEAP-MSCHAPv2 for our authenticated network and my Pre refuses to connect to the network.
I just want Google Calendar and Contacts sync to work the way it is supposed to :(.
GROUP TEXTING would definitely be a plus!
I think you can already do this (if it is what I think you are getting at)
In the messaging app, start a new message, and just keep adding your contacts in the "to" field. Once done just tap the bottom of the screen to type your message and hit send.
At the risk of beating a dead horse (or, for PETA, being a broken record):
1) REAL MEMO SUPPORT W/OUTLOOK SYNCHRONIZATION AND CATEGORIES! C'MON, I WANT MY PILOT 1000 MEMOS BACK!
2) BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD SUPPORT! JUST ADD THE PROFILE; WE ALREADY HAVE THE HARDWARE!
