DocsToGo creator DataViz has revealed what we already expected: full DocumentsToGo is coming to webOS. Before it launches, though DataViz is looking to hear from us, the Palm Pre community.
Our first hints at a DocumentsToGo for the WebOS came way back at the original CES when DataViz was listed as a launch partner. Since then, we've seen the icon pop up in demo videos (with a noncommital response from DataViz), DataViz appeared on a document listing companies with WebOS apps at or near launch, and on June 8th they confirmed to the world that DocView on the Pre is powered by DataViz. Felipe also reminds us in the comments that the software has had some attention in our forums. Then things went silent.
That seems to have changed, as DataViz has recently began talking about the Pre and WebOS. On their Facebook page, they've asked:
Any Palm Pre users out there? Would love to hear your thoughts/experiences so far!
Further, they've launched their official "Documents To Go® for palm webOS" page. They've setup a handy email signup option for email updates on product availability. They haven't set any specific release date or price, but chances are it'll be a paid upgrade. Given the quality of their recent iPhone and Android ports of DocumentsToGo, the possibilities of synergy integration and the existing quality shown in DocView, color us excited.

Hurry up already!
No impact for me. No promise of an app or info about it, same as Sling, I'm finding alternatives in the market place to fill in the void. The fact that they have an existing user base in Palm OS users does not seem to have phased them that they stand to lose many of them in one swoop by not having a continuity plan for thier loyal users to follow. Apparently, its easier to attract new users than to take care of existing user's concerns. Oddly I learned the opposite in business school, silly professors.
No no no... Dataviz, TAKE YOUR TIME. I want a QUALITY product free of bugs, like I suffered with the Treo and Centro. Please make sure this program is as stable as possible from launch!
Any chance they would support the full MS Office Suite and provide functionality for MS Outlook as well?
Not sure if they offer this for any other platform, but I'm really holding out on the Pre because there currently is no app that supports sync-ing all the components of Outlook (Tasks, Notes, etc. besides Calendar & Contacts) on the Pre.
I guess you miss my post of june 15th?

Thanks Felipe!
Yes!
I still have had the best office editing experience on die Palm OS, so I am very cautious about the ease of use and functionality.
Please provide good zooming / screensize scaleing. Landscape view usage (for .xls and.ppt essential) and find a way to easy access different cells in a xls spreadsheet with e.g. touch and hold menue for editing.
Ok, I know yo know what you are doing.
Take your time, have a good beta test program.
Any chance Microsoft Access would be included? It would be nice to carry my client records with me!
I'll be interested if they support OpenOffice files, since that's what my clients and I use.
Till then, well, Google Docs seems to work fine as long as I'm on the net.
The day this app arrives will likely be the day I upgrade my 755p to the Pre (although I'm hoping live TV through ORB or Sling is there by then too).
I want the same functionality I get from Docs2go on the Palm OS: Bullets & Numbering, Spell Check, Charts & Tables, Images view, footnotes (would like to be able to add FNs too though), email support, and the virtual keyboard, but in landscape view (yes, the Docs2go on Palm OS has a virtual keyboard!).
Also, since the Pre uses USB technology similar to thumb drives, why not add syncing software similar to MIGO.
Focus on MS Word and release that first. Then get to work on Excel & PowerPoint to release as an upgrade.
I love and need Docs2go!!!!!
I really hope this is a free upgrade. It was free on my wife's centro, it was free on my Q9c, and as far as I'm concerned, if Sprint and/or Palm want the Pre to have any real appeal to business users, this is a functionality that has to be a standard feature of the phone. Either Sprint or Palm should subsidize this, cash strapped though they may be, or else people will turn to the other platforms that provide full functionality OTB, IMHO.
If they follow the same model as before there will be a free basic version and a paid advanced one.
"Felipe also reminds un"
Just to get an idea of how people feel about the paid upgrade, I set up a poll in the forum. You can vote and see the results here: http://forums.precentral.net/webos-apps-software/190612-documents-go-pol...
Want DOCUMENTS TO GO to work on the Palm Pre?
HERE’S HOW:
Needed:
1. Your old Palm, with recent version of Docs to Go installed (files are native Word, Excel, and PPT files).
2. Expansion card in your old Palm
3. FileZ or similar program on your old Palm
4. Have new Palm Pre ready with “Classic” emulator installed (from MotionApps.com).
FIRST:
1. Install the Classic emulator on your Palm Pre. You’ll probably want to do that anyway, in order to run the old Palm apps on your Pre. Then make sure Classic is updated, so it will let you install those old Palm programs that require a database.
2. Find your old Documents to Go program and run it again as if you’re going to start to install it on your PC and old Palm again.
3. At some point before you finish, check the Install Tool on your PC (used to install files into your old Palm). It will show a list of files that Docs to Go wants to install on your old Palm. Of course, these should already be installed on your old Palm. But we’re just trying to get a list of these files at this point.
4. Cancel installation of Docs to Go (unless you want to reinstall it again into your PC and old Palm, for some reason).
5. Open a program called “FileZ” on your old Palm. If you don’t have it, look for it on the web and install it. Then, in your old Palm, open up FileZ and look for all the files that Docs to Go wanted you to install from Step 3. These files should already be on your old Palm in the “Internal” directory. Now copy each one of these files from the internal memory of your old Palm to the expansion card on your old Palm. There should be a pull-down file in your old Palm that gives you an option to “COPY” each file to the expansion card.
6. Take all these files copied to your old Palm’s expansion card and copy them to your PC.
7. Hook up your Palm Pre to your PC in USB mode. Look for the “Classic” folder in your Pre. If Classic is updated, it should have am “Install” folder. Dump all the Docs to Go files into that Install folder. Then run Classic in your new Pre.
8. Put copies of all the documents you might want to work on into a folder called “Documents” inside the “Classic” folder in your Pre.
9. Get “SyncToy” from Microsoft (available free online). You can then put all the same documents you want to work on into a folder called “PreDocsToGo” (or whatever you want to call it) in your PC’s “Documents” folder. Then you tell SyncToy to sync the folder on your PC with the folder in your Pre that contains the same documents.
This way, you can work on documents on your Pre (or on your PC) and whenever you get around to hooking up your Pre to your PC in USB mode, you can then run SyncToy to update whatever documents you’ve been working on from the device you were working on to the other device. For example, if you work on a spreadsheet on your Pre and save it, as soon as you sync with SyncToy, you also have all of your revisions on your PC as well. The only concern then is that you make sure you learn how to use Classic well enough so that you know when you’re typing a revision and when you are switching to another classic app (you’ll know what I mean when you play around with Classic and Docs to Go). But for me, this works smooth enough that I don’t feel I need to spend more $$ to update Docs to Go when it comes out for Pre.
i was going to buy a pre till I found pre cant open ppt, doc exel from websites...what the hell is that about my lousy treo 800w does that???
There must be some bright and bored individuals, who could bust out a lite version of OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) or better yet an online office suite like http://www.zoho.com/on the Pre. I do not have time and do not program much anymore, but I took a look at the WebOS SDK tools. Seems like it would be straight forward project for some late night tinkering. Not many people even need really deep editing/viewing/saving capabilities. Those working on the go all the time learn to get by on the bare minimum until getting to a more substantial home base.
Come on Dataviz.. I have been waiting ever since Palm released this new Pre phone. I'm willing to pay for a software that allows me to edit my excel documents on my phone. When is this going to happen???
