If you thought that some WiFi Palm OS HotSync action was hot, hold onto your hat because MotionApps has just shown off Classic HotSync over Bluetooth. Both Bluetooth and WiFi Hotsync will be coming to Classic in version 2.0, which will be a free upgrade to all current Classic owners. Classic 2.0 is also said to feature improved overall performance over the current release.

I won't be using it, but I know BT hotsync will be a welcome feature for a lot of users. I'm just happy for wifi that came with webOS 1.2. Classic is quickly becoming the perfect bridge app between the new and old Palm it was meant to be.
I have wifi hotsync working right now with latest web os update...I love it! Pocket Quicken works again, pocket mirror syncs up memos. I have goosync keeping date book 6 data synced to google calendar categories (groups) and that then pulls into pre calendar if I want to look at it there instead. Goosync keeps my wife's classic date book 6 and my date book 6 synced over the evdo data connection every little while! This solves most of my problems with pre.
I did create a new user name for hotsync (deleted old user name, deleted old user date off desktop hard drive and then created new user using the same original user name so apps would still be registered) and used ip address rather than trying to sync up with old user name since I had apps I wanted in classic already etc. I had a bump in the road on one of my pres and had to run down out of old files and reinstall the samgr.lib file to get rid of opening classic errors. Other pre went fine without glitch.
My pocket Quicken crashes if I try to open "budgets". Does yours work OK?
WiFi Palm OS HotSync action ?
Just an observation:
I think those guys have a GSM Pre. Look at the 1:27 mark when she tries to close the bluetooth settings app and the program hangs in there for a bit, you can see on the top left it says "Check SIM - SOS only".
edit: also noticed they have some Sprint apps in there as well, that's weird. I also noticed a Palm app with the orange Palm logo, wonder what app is that.
I see the sync option but cannot get mine to sync via wifi. Classic has the sync option now that WebOs is updated, but I notice that Classic is not yet 2.0 even though it shows the sync option. Don't know how the above poster was able to get his to sync. Hopefully more info will be out soon.
hmm, I did all that and I still annot Hotsync. Is there a version of Hotsync Manager I should be using? I have 6.0.1. Also, my desktop is on the same network, but it is not connected through WiFi, but through a cable. Does that make a difference? I have the IP address correct.
Check out this demo, it might help with setting up

I set it up exactly as the video showed, but it did not work. :(
I am using hotsync manager version 7.0.2 I suspect that your old version is messing you up. Also be sure to activate "network" under connections in your hotsync manager which should be running and in your start up menu on your desktop. Also be sure you always use the IP address and not try to accept any computer names it offers, even if they appear right. Be sure full IP address is there.
Yes I spent a couple of hours trying to get it to sync using the above methods and it did not sync. It does mention the last successful sync on my phone, which it obviously got the information from my PC, but nothing successfully came over to the phone.
If they ever decide to lower the price of Classic to around $10-$20 then I'll actually buy it. $30 is still too much now that webos apps are coming out the woodwork. Otherwise, I'll just carry around my Centro if I really need it.
Your right it was/is a waste of $30.
Classic controversy…
Thanks Professor
@davim00 – thank you!
@charlestwesco – good stuff! Thanks for sharing with the community (“real people” experiences and reports are the best)
@iamtina – we just published news on our side at http://motionapps.blogspot.com/2009/09/classic-v20-is-on-its-way-almost-...
This will shed light on why you do not see Classic as 2.0 just yet
And finally
@Krod301 – smooth. Very smooth
:)
I know this may seem like a weird question but what is so good about being able to sync with Classic? Also, what is so great about Classic?
FYI, I am actually wanting know, no sarcasm. I want to know because I never owned a Palm product before the Pre so I would like to know the benefits to all this syncing and why it is so important.
If you've never owned a Palm product before, then to be honest, you probably don't need Classic. Originally, the Palm/Access OS (the operating system of the old Palm Pilots all the way up to the latest Centros and pre-Windows Treos) used a desktop software and cradle/cable to syncronize the device to a computer. You would add events, notes, tasks and contacts to either your device or your computer and then the Hotsync application would syncronize these things to you had an exact copy of what was on your device on your computer, and vice versa. It also backed up all your settings, databases, media and installed apps in case something happened to your device. I had a Tungsten T3 before the Pre I have now that I'd let sit for too long, and the battery would completely drain, thus wiping out everything. With Hotsync, all I had to do was plug it in the cradle, hit the little button, and everything would be restored from where I had last syncronized. Even the color theme was restored. Some legacy Palm OS apps depend on Hotsync for their functions, such as syncronizing with a desktop software component. Hotsync also allows an easy way to install apps on the device.
If the Palm Pre is your first Palm device, then you probably wouldn't see much use for Classic, except to maybe try out some legacy apps, or to use the PIM functions or third party PIM solutions (Agendus, Datebk) which are more full-featured than the Pre's built in PIM applications are currently. However, many people coming from the old OS still have legitimate use for these apps that have no comparable replacement in webOS and so need Classic to still be able to continue to use them without having to carry around two devices.
How come Nokia tablet users can get Garnet VM for free, but Classic is $30??
