Out at the Open Mobile Summit, Palm SVP Michael Abbot demoed a new development tool Palm is working on, dubbed Ares. The platform is apparently a visual studio for webOS, utilizing a drag-n-drop interface. It will be entirely web-based and include debugging tools and a "mechanism for developers to share libraries and APIs."
To show off the power of Ares, Palm had an engineer code up a Flickr search tool -- in front of a live audience -- using the drag and drop tools to create the various widgets and form necessary for the app.
Directly within Ares, a developer can send the app to a phone, submit it to the App catalog, or share it with others.
In other words, the smartphone operating system that's easiest to develop for? It's going to get even easier by the end of the year.

Very, very, very sweet. It's not going to interest the typical PreCentral/Engadget-ish crowd I see commenting usually, but for corporate users and apps (think applets that integrate with corporate databases, salesforce.com, and applications like SAP), this is HUGE.

this seems like it could get pretty intersting app wise, especially if something powerful can be created. I hope it serves devlopers well. I'm sure ill check it out and see what's up when comes round.

A shame if this doesn't get more attention in the market. News like this makes the long term outlook for Palm and webOS much, much better.
Honestly, as I'm finally due for a new discount (yay, Pre, finally!), I had been pondering Android and its head start. With a tool like this coming to webOS, my skepticism of Palm's ability to catch up is quelled.
So, what are the chances we'd be able to develop WebOS apps *from* the Pre?
So when will the make an SDK that goes beyond web/html/css/javascript so folks can make REAL apps?
I think that the whole web-based development paradigm is at the heart of Palm's WebOS plan. The apps will get as "real" as the web-based design lets them get. You notice they keep talking about thing like Flash and CSS Transforms. Sorry if you think that's lame, but I think that's where they're headed. I think they're betting on making development "easy" (at the possible expense of some more complex apps). I'm actually OK with that.
When are they going to demo customizing text alerts??? I'm not hating, I'm just saying...

Not the only one. Sounds like Palm is really betting on "easy" app development, and I think that's a pretty cool thing and probably a good bet.
I read the article but I'm afraid I don't quite understand what this means for me as a palm pre owner. ? Anyone care to explain?!?
It doesn't really has anything that benefits you directly, but in the long term, it should allow more development of apps to be built and published faster and hopefully, allows developers to build better and more creative apps. At least, that’s the theory.
Yeah, it basically opens the floodgates for programmers. In the short term, many new simple apps should appear shortly after Ares. In the long run, the attraction for programmers should result in more advanced apps as well.
All great news for the end user. ;-)
This, my friends, is the results of Palm recent hires: Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer. This is primarily a version of their Mozilla Labs’ “Bespin” open web development platform (a web-standards browser development environment – excluding IE, of course).

At the very least, should be a much more intuitive development environment than what they currently offer.
I thought Bespin was more of textual code editor (and code management). This sound more like a WYSIWYG visual page editor?
Although it does fit with this in the sense that they're pushing the limits of web-based applications.
Technically, they didn't exclude IE. IE excluded themselves. :) (Standards compliance is a good thing Microsoft.)
This was my immediate assumption too a few weeks ago when they hired Ben and Dion. I've used Bespin a little and it's really nice, so I'm excited to see what "Ares" will be like.
As much as my good friends Ben and Dion would loooove the credit for Ares, it was in-progress for quite some time before they met up with Palm. Some of us have been making web-based tools for quite some time
Will this be a way for anyone to develope their own app?
Not necessarily "anyone". But it should make it a lot easier to develop simple apps, which should make it possible for more people.
If it allows me to debug code without dozens of Mojo.Log.info statements and pages of text file output, I'm HAPPY!

As much as I would love to have my demo spread across the interwebs, as far as I know there is no video of it online.
Soon we'll have it all worked out.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have Visual Basic programming experience and like how you can build apps to work inside of office programs with a visual editor. I like how I'll be able to do something similar for webOS. I think this will be HUGE!
