App Spotlight: Top Stocks

We’re still in the early days of the App Catalog; that persistent "beta" banner and the sparse (but consistently growing) app count reminds us of that fact every time we go in to shop for applications. Thankfully, the developers participating in Palm's Early Access Program have been creating some great applications over the last several months, and utilities like flpalm's gDial Pro, i-marco's Scientific RPN Calculator, and games like SacherSoft's Word Whirl have gone a long way in keeping our voracious appetites for apps sated.

Another application to continue that trend is financial markets information aggregator (say that three times fast) Top Stocks, and stock market junkies should take note: this program is easily one of the most flexible and highly configurable applications in this category. In addition to the great user interface, some of the notable features include:
  • Integration with your Google Finance account
  • Customization, customization, customization.  Don't like the mini-graphs? Toggle 'em off.  Would you rather the program updates your stocks every 30 or 60 seconds instead of every 10 seconds? Go ahead and change the interval.  Find the background distracting? Disable it.
  • The ability to easily add, remove, and rearrange stocks in the watched stocks list.
  • A way to easily search for stocks. Simply type the first few letters and potential matches will come up.
  • On device caching of stock info for offline viewing.
  • Access to news feeds. View news items from a variety of feeds, from US Markets to Earnings, IPO’s to Money & Government, and more.
  • The ability to share stock information and more via email and SMS

It's good stuff, and if this program is any indication of the quality of apps that'll be coming our way as the Catalog picks up speed, I think the platform will shape up very nicely.

Interested in learning more? Like many other developers, the ones behind Top Stocks smartly utilize the PreCentral forums as one one of their main points of contacts with their users.  It makes sense; the forums are a bustling place, and feedback can be nearly instantaneous.

Both Top Stocks ($4.99) and Top Stocks Lite (the evaluation version) can be found in the App Catalog.

I wonder if it can give you an alert when stock prices reaches a certain price or drop beyond a certain price.

I don't believe so, but that would be a great feature.

Hey Derek, precentral.net has been very slow to load lately on my web pages. Wonder if you are getting a lot of traffic? Maybe add a server?

Alerts are in the works, version 1.7 will have them ;) (developer here)

No, Top Stocks doesn't alert you when a stock reaches a price. MoreStocks is another great app in the catalog which has that capability, making it much more appealing. And it's listed at the same price!

I love top stocks. Thank you developers for giving us these great apps!

I use the Lite version. I like it a lot. I am not too much into stocks (I just have my company's stocks). I use this app, couple of times a week. I want to support the developer. But, for my usage, $4.99 is too much. I will pay $1.99 or $2.99 without any questions.

For people who track stocks often, this is a great app. The best stocks app in the store. But for everybody else, its little pricey. I request the developers to reduce the price so that more people like me would buy it.

Thanks for the app.

I really wish the paid app catalog was open to Canada!

+1
Anyone know why this is not available in Canada?

It will be. How soon only depends on Palm. Paid apps are available just in US right now.

I wonder what this will do for sales and ultimately to their stocks. I know for a fact that I wouldn't have even considered the pre had this update been released prior to me buying it and I doubt i`m the only one thinking this. Really sorry to hear other euro countries are worse off than the uk
