According to J.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster, Palm and Sprint have managed to sell 100,000 Palm Pre phones in the first week since the phone’s launch. Coster estimated that 50,000 phones were moved during the launch weekend and that “channel checks conducted Thursday, the 11th, suggest shipments to Sprint stores have averaged about 10-15 units every 2 days, implying about 36K-55K units have shipped by Saturday (1,00 stores, three shipments of 10-15 units).” Coster also stated that RadioShack’s inventory of Pre phones has been fully replenished, but Best Buy stores have not received any new units. These statements jive with early reports that the Palm Pre launch was the biggest and most successful that Sprint has ever seen.

You think they will set the record for Phones returned? I hope not, I really love this phone. But they better roll out some updates.
what about exchanges? Mine was missing the extra lens protection.. my brother's had it.
I'm still waiting for it tho, heh.
A success? I guess if you look at the number of units sold.
Too bad I'm on a two-week waiting list for my Pre. I wonder how many Sprint customers are going to follow me to AT&T next week for the new iPhone?
Cause I'm done waiting.
LOL, I spent 14 years at Cingular/ATT. Every year, I was ready to quit and they kept lowering my rates and sucked me in for another commitment. But that was just for voice, their strength. Good luck on their EDGE network, reminds me of dialup.
But, honestly, you're going to go commit 2400 bucks over two years for a phone that is one generation behind and they wont give you half the stuff Sprint does for free just because Pre is selling out too fast? Heck, I'll hold the door for you. Why wait in line for Coors when you can get a Meister Brau right now for a dollar more, heh?
you, yourself & I
maybe you should have been a little quicker. Sucks to be you i guess. If you are so interested in the iphone, what are you doing on this forum anyway? hmm. Better think before you speak buddy.
iKnowRite? Let's get him boy!
Gonna be similar to the Centro, sell like crap to start off with but when it's moved on other carriers and more kinks are ironed out plus the money coming in for promotion.
This thing is only getting started. Pity they didn't have the cash to do it at lanch, but we all knew that any way...
Great acheivement considering the lack of cash etc.
It will be nothing like the Centro, contrary to the rumors floating around, Verizon nor ATT will be getting the Pre. Verizon or ATT might be getting a different webOS device.
I have a Blackberry Storm + Pre...
The Storm at Launch was a DISASTER!! anyone that ordered after 1pm EST had to wait 15 to 20 days.. FOR THE SAME REASON!! LIMITED SUPPLY...
All systems went down at that time! I know you guys want the phone now and will "just go get an iPhone".. but just be patient call a different Sprint Store! I had to wait 17 days to get the Storm and i understand. Heck if verizon pumped TENS of Millions into advertising and Still Botched the launch... i say Sprint is doing better!
I can't believe how overhyped the storm was. My wife got one about one monthafter launch, and after two days of playing with it it we got bored, frustrated and returned it two days later. The biggest problem was RIMs lack of follow through on steady updates to fix its major problems...besides fixing battery life that's probably my only major concern with the Pre as well. Wil Palm follow through with its promise of steady and significant software updates? only time will tell
I love this phone, I love what it does, I love how it works...it really is the answer for me...
But as stated above, it's going to set a record for returns too if they don't fix the signal and battery issues.
I closed all the apps out, I turned off location services, turned off wifi, and set my phone down on the dresser for the night. I set it down at 10:30 and woke up at 7:30. I pulled it from the charger at %100 and set it down on the dresser, this morning it was drained to %74.
UNACCEPTABLE
The advice to "turn stuff off/disable features" is also unacceptable. The Pre just needs to manage its energy better. Bottom line. For a phone to idle it's way through 1/4 of the battery in 9 hours is crazy. That's just a bit past a 24 hour period of standby time before you go completely dead without even using the phone at all.
Seriously, complete retardation and worthlessness, that's showstopper folks and untolerable for a mobile device.
My E71 can last a full week on standby, and with moderate use goes 3 days w/o a charge.
Palm has located the problem in the software architecture that is causing the battery to drain unusually rapidly. They said they will be pushing out an update soon. That, according to Phonedog.com
All the better. I really do hope they get that rolled out before the 30 day period. That's basically the only issue bugging me about this phone. Otherwise, it's the best phone I've ever used.
This is odd. My first Pre had reception problems and short battery life. Because of a bad key, the phone had to be replaced. The new Pre has no reception issues and GREAT battery life. Oddly, the MAC addresses differ by only two(last octet 0A versus 0C) so they must have been manufactured at the same time.
Both phones have webOS v1.0.2, so is there a hardware problem?
good thing you never got the Storm!! LoL... try and "re-calibrate" your battery let the phone go to ALMOST dead.. then put it on the charger a few hours before you go to sleep and just let it charge OVERNIGHT in the USB, keep it on the charger as long as you can don't plug and unplug it..
Again it has nothing to do with battery but something to do with the "battery meeter calibration"
Yeah I tried that day before yesterday, it didn't make a difference.
In all fairness, no phone goes toe and toe with the E71. They basically took a giant battery and strapped a phone to it. When you remove the back cover on the thing it's about ALL battery!
But still, I'd tolerate a slightly thicker Pre if it had the battery longevity of other phones.
Well, lots of people wanted this phone released three months ago. New cutting edge hardware, new cutting edge software, this is the stuff that takes time to sort itself out. It will improve, I'm sure, but it will never be a strength.
They were so aggressive to get down to a sexy notable form factor. I think we'll be able to get extended batteries with a bubble back to add some serious time to the phone. Might have to give up the Touchstone for those batteries though.
I'm giving this a wing. Touchstone at work, Touchstone at home and carry the USB cable and likely a spare battery for emergency use. This appears to be the one compromise on the phone and something I'm sure they will work on for Pre2.
When the serious Treo style power-aps are ready, it will be lights out for considering any other phones over functionality.
I got mine yesterday, so +1
I'm shocked by some photos I took in a dark club. Everyone is shocked by how good they look.
I also was impressed by the speed of the downloads/install of new aps. I want more apps though. Apparently I'm an idiot and don't understand Evernote.
By the way, I typed this on my Pre ;)
I really want Pre and subsequently Palm to succeed. I plan on getting one after my iPhone 3G contract is up next summer.
I don't think it will have record returns... It will sell well and their big advertizement plan with microsoft is gunna be hugw plus once webOS is on other carriers and the sdk is out. There will be a ton of apps and a ton of new customers. Once its on more than 1 carrier. Think about this. Iphone 1st gen sold 150_@00 phones on the nations larhest netwrok... This sold 100,000 phones on the nations third largest network. I would say that is bout on par.

To be fair (and If I'm not mistaken), Apple sold around 150K units over its launch weekend only. In contrast, the 100,000 units sold by palm of the PRE include both weekend and first week sales (not just weekend sales).
IMO you should also compare the economic conditions at the launches. iPhone launched in pretty decent times, iirc.
Palm and Sprint get kudos for recognizing a demand and producing a product that satisfies it. I think their pricing helped a lot; Verizon charged $250 after mail in rebate for the LG Voyager, and that was in early 2008, right?
I hope we get an update next Sat, and then another 2 weeks later to keep the success rolling.
